Why is patch leather called patch leather?

It's called "patch leather" because it sounds so much better than "leather scraps."

Patch leather is not a kind of leather but an assemblage made from leather scraps -- hence a patch leather bomber jacket today tends to sell for beneath $40 while a leather bomber jacket tends to start at $160 and go well up from there.

In other words, there is a somewhat strong correlation between what you'll pay and what you'll get.

Is faux leather waterproof?

Yes, typically faux leather will keep out water. Because it is made from plastic or synthetic material and not leather, faux leather is usually water repellent and can get wet. Under normal conditions Faux leather should be waterproof, but seems, zippers and other areas may not. That said, Faux leather is probably not the best substitute for something like a rain jacket even if it does keep out the water.

How do you raise the grain of leather?

If you are working with vegetable tanned leather you can use a technique known as boarding leather.

It is a technique that will use 2-3 passes across your work by folding the leather on one end and roll that fold to the other end. One pass left to right will raise the grain and look like lines across the leather.

The more you repeat this the more raised the grain looks and the more supple the leather gets.

You can now use the same technique from top to bottom. This will change the grain and give you more of a grid pattern. Finally you can repeat this technique and go at a diagonal from top left to bottom right. This will give you sort of a diamond pattern and is my favorite.

Do dry leather gloves have electrical resistance?

Yes, dry leather has an electrical resistance of around 100kOhm, enough to protect from residential voltage, but much less than what you would want for distribution voltage. However, the resistance of leather falls dramatically (up to 95%) when damp, so rubber gloves are always required when working around high voltage.

What is the difference in top grain leather and full grain leather?

Full grain leather is the highest quality of leather that you can get and is made from the entire cowhide. It is thick, making it very strong and durable. It also is costs a lot more than many other types of leather.

Top grain leather is leather that has imperfections on the surface of the hide that are removed by sanding and then refinished. It has also had the "split" layer removed, meaning that the bottom layer of the hide is taken away. Top grain leather is thinner than full grain and is less expensive. It also is more supple.
