Why is Lent important?

Lent is the season of prayer and penance to prepare for Easter, and to dispose the faithful for a more fruitful reception of the graces that Christ merited by His passion and death. According to Pope Paul VI, who issued the revised laws on fast and abstinence "the days of penitence to be observed under obligation throughout the church are all Fridays and Ash Wednesday, that is to say the first days of Great Lent, according to the diversity of rites. Their substantial observance binds gravely" (Paenitemini,III, norm II).

Besides fast and abstinence on specified days, the whole Lenten season is to be penitential, with stress on prayer, reception of the sacraments, almsgiving, and the practice of charity.

What is carried by the priest after Holy Communion on Holy Thursday?

Roman Catholic AnswerThe Most Blessed Sacrament: after the Mass on Holy Thursday, which does not end with a blessing (as it is the start of the Triduum liturgy which continues on Good Friday), the priest gathers up all the consecrated Hosts, and instead of putting them in the Tabernacle carries them to the Altar of Repose. While carrying them, he covers them with a Humeral Veil. From the Altar of Repose they will retrieve Hosts to give Holy Communion on Good Friday, and to the sick and dying.

For more on the altar of repose you may read responses from a professor of liturgy at a Pontifical University at the link below:

What is considered an act of penance for Friday lent?

Anything that will take some effort to you. It should be helpful to someone, including yourself. Such as giving up smokeing, drinking, lying, swearing or even fighting with a parent.

Why do christians observe lent?

Many Christians don't observe lent at all.

For example, Jehovah's Witnesses as Christians don't observe it, and we get along just fine spiritually. Most of us don't even know what it means or what it's all about. We don't pay any attention to it.

Another Answer:

Another Answer:

Not 'all' but many Christians do observe the Lenten season. This has evolved since its incorporation into the RC Church in the 4th Century - both in lenght and fasting requirements. Lent is used for "fasting from sin and from vice…forsaking sin and sinful ways." It is a season "for penance, which means sorrow for sin and conversion to God." This tradition teaches that fasting and employing self-discipline during Lent will give a worshipper the "control over himself that he needs to purify his heart and renew his life."

But what does the Bible say? That we each need God's Spirit to guide us - giving us temperance and Godly self-control. No amount of fasting - of and by itself - will produce the amount of self-control God demands of His children.

Galatians 5:16-18New International Version (NIV)

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Why are you told that God gave his only begotten son when in fact He only lent him for a few years and then got him back again?

Jesus was on earth for around 30-33 years. God gave His son in the sense that He offered Him to go through death in place of mankind. The gift of Jesus, however, still is available to all men should they choose to accept it. Just because Jesus returned to Heaven does not mean the gift was rescinded. A relationship with God is now possible through Christ, but was not before Jesus came to earth.

How to start kissing her at the end of the date?

It all comes natural, and I know it's hard for some of you. If you feel it's time for you to kiss your date, do it. Don't hesitate, be a man. Doesn't matter how good or bad the kiss is, a couple of seconds on the lips and that's that. From there, I can't tell what can happen after that. Make sure your partner is ready at the same level as you are, you don't want to go too fast on her and avoid the kiss. It's all about timing here.

What does the Night Vigil symbolize at Maundy Thursday?

The night vigil on Maundy Thursday was the beginning of Jesus' passion. Jesus and the Diciples has already had the Last Supper, and frankly the Disciples were full and content.

Jesus asked the Disciples to stay up and watch while he went into the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. Jesus was very distressed because he knew he was going to be crucified, and he knew what a painful death that was going to be. He asked only that the Disciples stay up and "watch" with him. He needed support, friendship, love. And he got none of those.

Their failure is ours -- they fell asleep. Hence Jesus' famous saying: "the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." You can't really blame the Disciples, they just wanted a warm bed and some sleep.

Jesus knew otherwise, and that is the symbolic act. At Jesus' most dire hour -- when he could have said no to crucifixion, but chose to say yes, where were the Disciples? Asleep. Just like us.

What is the first Sunday in Lent called?

It is commonly known as "Ash Wednesday", so named as the Faithful receive ashes on their foreheads. The ashes, which are a sacramental in the Catholic Church, serve as a reminder that we are mortal and death is certain. With this consideration, it is hoped that the Faithful will give a good effort at sanctifying themselves through Lent, not only to be ready for Easter, but that they be ready for death when it comes.

What are some things children can do instead of fasting during lent?

instead of fasting and giving up something like chocolate or lollies, you may want to take up something like doing more exercise, stop biting your nails or make your bed every single day.

Do you have to be Catholic to participate in Lent?

No, you do not have to be a Catholic to participate in Lent.

Roman Catholic AnswerAs Lent is for the purpose of preparing for the death and resurrection of the Savior during the Easter Triduum, and I think the best preparation for receiving our Blessed Lord would be to start at the beginning, then, I should think that becoming Catholic would be the first step. This is why the RCIA classes end in Lent and the catechumens are brought into the Church at the Easter Vigil.

Who hated Jesus on Palm Sunday?

Where is Holy Week not celebrated?

In any society that is not Christian - it is a Christian concept.

Answer:

The term "holy week" isn't in the Bible... yet, there are two annual "feasts" of God called "Sabbaths" or "High Day" Sabbaths, that He commands His people to observe, that are each of "seven-day" duration. One is the seven "Days of Unleavened Bread" that begin on the day AFTER THE PASSOVER:

"First comes the Lord's Passover... on its appointed day IN EARLY SPRING. THEN the day AFTER the Passover... the Festival of Unleavened Bread begins. This festival to the Lord continues for SEVEN DAYS, and during that time all the bread you eat must be made without yeast." (Lev.23:5-6 NLT New Living Translation)

The second commanded seven-day feast of God comes in the FALL; called "The Feast of Tabernacles."

"Tell the Israelites to begin the Festival of Shelters on the fifth day after the Day of Atonement. This festival to the Lord will last for SEVEN DAYS." (verse 34)

The two annual feasts to the Lord [Jesus Christ, the Creator God of the Old Testament - see John 1:3] seldom, if ever, fall within the confines of a standard seven-day week. But are simply seven-day observances that usually stretch between two normal weeks.

And in any event... neither of these seven-day feasts of Christ that are commanded in the Bible forever, are observed by modern professing Christianity.

The "holy week"that's familiar to somany modern professing Christian denominations, and that's not found in the Bible;precedes instead the "holiday" that they observe, which they call "Easter" Sunday... another "holiday" not commanded or found in the Bible.

Not all denominations of modern professing Christianity observe "holy week"... so it's kind of globally "hit-or-miss" as to who does or does not celebrate it.
