How does llamas defend itself?

Llamas are usually not the type to protect cattle because cattle tend to be big and intimidating enough to predators to be able to take care of themselves. Donkeys (females usually preferred over males) may be used, however, to protect calving cows and baby calves from roaming predators. However, even the momma cows themselves are good at being very protective of their calves, especially if they are beef range cows.

Llamas are best used as livestock guardians for sheep and goats because of their aggressive nature towards predators like coyotes, wolves, cougars and even bears. But when llamas aren't enough protection, livestock guard dogs like the Great Pyrenees are even better against such large adversaries as bears and cougars when protecting their flock.

The alpaca fibre market is predicted to develop dramatically in the next years, thanks to the constantly expanding number of alpaca fibre fashion boutiques around the world. With the surge in demand for warm and soft alpaca fibre, the alpaca fibre market is rising at a quick rate as the trend of supplying highly sustainable and eco-friendly clothes and accessories gains popularity in the fashion apparel industry.

Manufacturers are focusing on alpaca nutrition to improve alpaca fibre quality -

While the alpaca fibre market is increasing at a rapid pace, industry players are working to improve the quality of alpaca fibre in order to attract more customers. Because high genetic merits can lead to vast volumes of high-quality alpaca fibre, alpaca fibre manufacturers are focusing their efforts on providing nutritious diet to alpacas. Alpaca nutrition has a big impact on their health and reproduction capacities, and it also helps them produce softer, higher-quality fibre.

Peru remains the world's leading producer and exporter of alpaca fibre, with China and Italy as the primary destinations for Peruvian alpaca fibre exports. The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) developed the luxury fashion brand "Alpaca del Per" for the sale of high-quality alpaca fibre clothes and accessories to capitalise on numerous commercial opportunities in the alpaca fibre market.

What does the Llama breed?

Yes, llamas and alpacas can cross breed. It usually results in a "mini-llama" with a llama looking head on an alpaca size body. Huarizo is the technical term for the cross between a male alpaca and a female llama. Misti is the term for the cross of a female alpaca and a male llama. If the cria (baby) resembles a llama it's called a warilla. If it resembles an alpaca it's called a T'aqa. These crosses are considered undesirable in their native lands of Peru, Bolivia and Chile because the offspring are usually too small to be pack animals and their fleece is more coarse than pure alpaca. In the US, they are sometimes bred because they are smaller and therefore easier to handle than a full-size llama. *Llamas have also been successfully cross-bred with dromedary camels through artificial insemination.

Llamas eat mainly hay, grass, and grain when in captivity. For treats, llamas like cut-up apples, carrots, broccoli, and orange peels. Because the llamas have 3 stomach compartments, the food must pass through all the stomachs during digestion.

How do you eat a llama?

You usually eat a goat by first taking its hooves off, as you can soak these in the water and use the juice as gravy. Then you chop the ears off and cook in the oven, these can be used and eaten like crackling on pig. It is then advised that you take the skin of the goat off and rub it all over your body, this way becoming one with the dead goat. You have to cook it on the night of a full moon otherwise the goat spirit will come back to haunt you. After you have dug the hole to cook the goat in, a bit of rosemary is thrown in. Why you ask? Goats like rosemary, and would most likely if given the choice, want to be cooked with it. Then hot coals are thrown in the pit, and finally the goat. The goat then needs to be buried with dirt from a fresh grave site. After these steps, you have to wait until the next blue moon. When this time arrives it is best served with cat or dog meat.

This will give you the best tasting goat as this recipe has been in my family for generations and has yet to fail me yet. Good luck. Hope you enjoy this as much as I do. ~ Levi, Stanley and Douglas
