What can you feed an abandoned baby lovebird?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you are willing to start hand feeding depends on how old they are. from newborn to 2 weeks of age use a syringe they can have babyfood (humans) or formula for birds that you could find at the local pet store or even online and mix that with warm water freeze in ice cube trays then when ready to start feeding take 1 cube mix with warm water until texture is easily squeezed through the syringe. at 4 weeks or older you can start introducing newer foods like:

Cheerios, sunflower sprouts, pea shoots, millet spray, cooked corn nibblets, cooked carrots *chopped to bite size peices*, hard boiled egg, mashed potatoes with no additives, pellets from pet store you may want to dilute them in a little warm water to soften them if they are close to 4 weeks it may be a little too hard to chew. hope this answer helps!

If the parents are pushing the same egg out of the nest box there is a possibility that something could be wrong with that particular egg. Sometimes there may be too many eggs for the parents to tend to so therefore an egg may be discarded for that reason.

How much is an African lovebird?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I purchased my red bellied parrot about 15 years ago, the cost was 600.00. He was a baby and was purchased in Stamford Ct. He is a lovely bird, very independant, talks a great deal and picks up on noises and sounds fairly easy, However, this breed can be nippy but great for aparment living as the sound level is minimal compared to other parrots. I have noticed with my male that he does suffer from "night fright" therefore a light must be left on all night long as he will get anxious and might hurt himself as he panics in the darkness. They are suprisingly healhty and entertains themselves so if you are not able to devot a great deal of time (if you work) they can nap all day.

To calm down your lovebird when it starts biting, you have to say no in a firm voice. This shows them that what they are doing is wrong. Once it stops biting start talking to it in a soothing voice once again.

Can i mate my Masked lovebird with my fishers lovebird?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I purchased 2 birds, a masked lovebird and a fishers lovebird from pets mart 2 years ago. I felt sorry for the birds because someone purchased the other two and separated them. A friend has other types of birds, he recomend that I put a little house in the cage to see if they would mate. Well they did, after a month I saw egg shells in the bottom of the cage. Then about 2 weeks later I noticed Spike (female) taking food from Sam (male) I didn't think anything of it. When I told my friend, he said that's because she has little ones in there. I couldn't see anything so I took a picture, put the camera close to the opening of the little house and snap. I saw 3 little birds, it took my breath away. The birds are out of the house and having a blast, but the cage is getting a bit small for all 5 birds. I'm very happy to have these little additions to my family of animalitos. So let me tell you a bit about the new babies: (it = he or she) Beaker .. because it took the longest to come out of the house, and it has a black strip over it's beak. Fighter .. because it fights with everyone in the cage. Destroyer .. it tears, rips, peck, and tries to destroy all the toys in the cage. They are the most energetic and playful little things you ever did see. I must go shopping for a new cage for them. Bigger and wider with lots of room to fly around. I will never cut their wings, so they will be free to do as they please in their cage that is. I took so many pictures and videos of them to show all my friends and family, I'm such a proud mamma .. don't you think ^;^

How do you tell gender of lovebirds?

User Avatar

the best way to check the gender of the love birds is by using a DNA test kit, you can buy it in some pets shop.

the other way is through looking at thier nose, if it is color blue its a male, then if it is white then its a female bird but these way is not very accurate though you cannot spend any single dollars but this way need expertise.

Why does your female love bird throws her egg away?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If the mother is not "able" or "willing" to care for the hatchlings she may throw them out. Also sometimes the mothers sense that there is illness or sickness in the babies and throws them out to keep the remaining chicks healthy, and possibly herself. As for Throwing eggs out, she is not yet ready for the comittment. You should think of hand raising the chicks or giving them to a place like Magnolia Bird Farm in Anaheim and Riverside, they know everything from a-z about raising and keeping birds.

Can a lovebird and a conure breed?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes they can, but it is not recommended. There are many color mutations in the different Lovebird species, I can see no reason to crossbreed species, when you do you pollute the blood of the different species. These birds get sold and end up with others who unwittingly breed them, the next thing you know it could get hard to get pure birds of a given species. Please don't be part of this problem stay in the species and breed for different colors.

How do you tell the difference between a male or female lovebird?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

We cantell the difference b'ween a male and a female lovebird is by doing the pelvis test or by observering their leg placing area, while they are sitting on the preech.

1. For the female, the leg spacing will be very "long" and for the male, the leg spacing will be very "short".

2. The other thing to know their sex by checking their "pelvis bone vent".

For the female lovebirds, the pelvis vent will be very big, ( i.e;) the distance b'ween two bones will be much bigger in size.

The vent of male lovebird will be smaller than the femalelovebirds i.e; their pelvis bone is narrow in size.

This can be very suitable for some of the few lovebirds only. B'cos for the female lovebirds, their pelvis bone will be look be closer as the male. It will be increased during their breeding season. so please kindly note these above points before you judge their sex.

Better go for the DNA test for accurate results.

How long does it take for a love bird to lay its egg after being produced?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Mating is not necessary for most birds to come into lay, including lovebirds. Lay is most often brought about by one or more of the following - an acceptable nest being available, day-length, nutritional status, courtship or song (NOT mating) of a male.

It is not inconcievable that a single lovebird will lay almost permanently under suitable conditions.

How long does a lovebird live for?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Most love birds live up to the old age of 8 - 10 years. Some love birds can die before if they die of an illness or otherwise. 10 years old for a love bird is classed as a very old age so if you have a love bird you will be lucky if lives to that age.

What do lovebird eggs look like?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Love birds nests look like normal nests but just in a nesting box or in the wild a hole in a tree... They like to use shredded paper and leaves for their nest. Females tuck nesting materials in their feathers and then carry them to the nest box, males TRY to tuck the materials in their feathers but can't, so they just carry them in their beak or just don't try :P

Sometimes though it is not sure if the bird will lay eggs because in captivity y'know how birds can get nurotic and crazy and so maybe 1 bird will try to make a nest and the other will remove the nest or they will make a nest but u might notice that neither bird can tuck mateials in their feathers or both are females this means that any eggs laid will be unfertile or just that the male birds are going a bit coocoo...

How do you know lovebirds eggs are fertile?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

at first if you have a nest box they will begin to mate. you'll see them mating when the female lies down on the cage floor and the male will stand on top of her. then your female should be cutting strips of paper and putting it in her tail feathers. next your female will only come out the nest box like once twice or more it depends. you should look in the box once everyday. they need to have privacy. soon enough you should see some eggs. if they don't it's okay. just make sure you provide them with a lot of calcium. i mostly recommend cuttle bone. you should get them at a pet store. please remember to take nice care of your birds!
