The modem is connected to your Internet Service Provider, ISP.

The ISP has your account, which means they assign a user ID and password to either you or your modem. The modem ID and PW are found on the info underneath it. Don't change that.

Any MacBook should be fine for music making . Playing a keyboard through midi software is not too demanding and can be done on any MacBook while mixing multitrack recordings with Logic (See links below) will require a good chunk of RAM (the current MacBooks come with 2GB which should be enough) but the processor should be fast enough to handle all the processing needs.

I'd say either a Macbook original, or a Macbook Air. They are both small, and are the same price of $999. Don't go buying a Macbook Pro, that laptop is expensive and to a 12-year old, it makes no difference between a Macbook Air and Macbook Pro. Both MAcbook Air and original Macbook have high memory for games and school projects, downloads etc. Take note that the Macbook Air has no disc drive. So if he or she is into watching movies or playing CDs, choose the original Macbook. Hope this helps!
