The most succinct answer is that she fell into it. As most know, Madonna began her career as a dancer, but soon became frustrated with it. She has remarked that she soon realized she would never become a true 'star' by doing modern dance, so she quit dancing professionally. She then thought she would become an actress instead, but found little success. She joined, first as only a drummer and guitarist, and also helping write songs. She pulled to become the lead singer of the band, called The Breakfast Club; this caused tension within the group, and Madonna soon left to form her own band, Emmy, with Steve Bray, a drummer and a friend of hers from the University of Michigan.
