I have a marlin 55 12 Ga and Im wondering if it shoots 3" and 3 3/4" shells and if steel shots are recommended for the barrel?

Make sure the firearm is unloaded, remove bolt by moving it to the rear and pulling the trigger. Next remove the stock takedown screw. This is all that is required for cleaning, however the mag can be disassembled by removing the forward retaining pin and the feed lips can be removed by by taking out the screw in front of the trigger.

The Marlin 99 was a low-priced utility rifle made only from 1959-1961 and it has not much collector value. Today they sell for under $100 and Micro groove is no longer used by Marlin because it wore out too quickly. It was used to lessen production time and cost.

Other factors such as rarity of caliber or guage and higher grades have significant impact on value. Recommend that you see a local gun dealer for an appraisal. Model 336 was not made until 1948. Double check your serial number and then recheck DOM. 1945-1947 was the Model 36, but it had a square bolt not a round one. More like the new 1894 they make today. Check a 336 then an 1894 and you will see what I mean.

Marlin still sells them, but I've seen them at Gander Mountain. Make sure the release lever is on magazine before you buy, Marlin had a bad batch w/o them made and distributed accidentally.

The 1936 Marlins were made in 1936 & 1937.The marlin model 36 came in three different variations.The model 36 first variation was marked model 1936 on the upper tang and was made from 1937-1940 and had no letter prefix to the serial number.The second variation had the same markings on the upper tang,but had a heavier buttstock and no longer had a fluted comb.The buttplate was thicker also with a slightly curved style,and the forearm was a heavier beaver style.The letter B was the prefix to the serial number.The third variation was offered in 30-30,or 32 Win Special,no upper tang markings.Rifles had a letter A suffix,sporting carbine had a SC suffix,and regular carbine had a RC suffix.The the prefix had a small letter C in 1946,and large letter D in 1947.The second variation was made in 1941 only,while the third variation was made in 1946-1947.

No, you can not. The 44 Special can be fired in any firearm chambered and marked for the 44 Magnum cartridge. The 444 Marlin is a rifle cartridge (much longer than either the 44 Spl or 44 Mag), and is much more powerful. The 44 Spl and 44 Mag. were designed as handgun cartridges, but have been adapted to a small number of lever-action carbines. Bert H.

1983. marlin, after 73 dropped alphabetical prefixes and used the first two numbers in the serial number to identify the year. Anything after 73, you subtract 100 from the first two numbers in the serial number. 100-17=83. Any marlin works this way.
