It was first observed on May 30,1868 at Arlington National Cemetery when flowers were placed on graves of Union and Confederate soldiers. New York was the first state to recognize the holiday in 1873.

After World War I Decoration Day was expanded to honor those killed in all wars in which the United States was involved. The name Memorial Day became the more commonly used name for the holiday but it was not until 1967 that Decoration Day was officially renamed to Memorial Day by federal law.

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and was first observed on May 30, 1868. It was observed on that day of the year (May 30) for 103 years - until 1970. In 1971 the Uniform Monday Holiday Act went into effect moving Memorial Day, and several other holidays, from their traditional dates to Mondays to enable government workers to have three-day weekends during the year. Since 1971 Memorial Day has been on the last Monday of May so the date of the month changes every year. The last time that May 30th was on a Monday was in the year 2011 and the next time that May 30th will be on a Monday will be in the year 2016.
