He than found now lead singer and rhytym guitar James Hetfield and they found bassist Ron Mcgoveny who quit and guitarist Dave Mustaine who got kicked out. The line-up was changed to Kirk Hammett, Cliff Burton (who died in a bus accident) and Lars and James. After Cliffs death Jason Newstead joined the band. He quit in 2003 and was replaced by permanent bassist Rob Trujillo

the best selling metal bands is a grey area, merchandise wise you're looking at bands like Iron Maiden & Metallica. Pantera, Slayer, dream theater, Lamb Of God, Dimmu Borgir, Children Of Bodom, Machine Head and a few others at the moment are most likely selling more records than maiden and metallica.
