Moses

Moses is the most important prophet in Judaism and is also important in Christianity and Islam. Moses led the Israelites out of their slavery in Egypt, miraculously crossing a divided Red Sea. At Mount Sinai he received the Ten Commandments. He led the Israelites through 40 years of desert wandering and finally to the Promised Land. He died there, within sight of his goal, at the age of 120.

What does covenant box mean in the bible?

Some translations of the Bible into English have translated the word for the Ark of the Covenant as the "covenant box." These translators are trying to make the text meaningful to people who don't see boxes called arks every day. This is a noble effort, but it does introduce some unusual terms, such as this one. The box in question was made by Moses (well, Bezalel and Oholiab), and its manufacture is described in the book of Exodus (around chapter 38 or so).

Why did God ask Moses to kill a year old lamb for Passover?

God ordered this so that He could identify which houses had Jews in them so that they would not be affected by the Plague of the Firstborn. See the Bible Verses below discussing this.

Selected verses from Exodus Chapter 12. The removed verses are irrelevant to this question. All translations are NIV.

3Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household.

7Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs.

12“On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord

.

13The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.

Why didn't the Israelites nor Moses practice circumcision during his reign over Israel when circumcision is supposed to have originated as a law under Moses?

ANSWER:

Circumcision was actually given to Abraham and his descendants as a sign of

the covenant.

Gen:17:10: This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you

and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.

Gen:17:11: And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be

a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.

Gen:17:12: And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you,

every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought

with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.

But after four hundred years of bondage in Egypt, they (speaking of Israel) lost

sight of it and most of the other requirements of GOD. It became known as a

law of Moses because he had to instruct the children of Israel concerning

circumcision since they had forgotten.

[ correction: Joshua 5:5

5 All the people who came out of Egypt

had undergone circumcision;

but all the people whose birth had taken place

in the waste land on their journey from Egypt had not.

]

Moses, himself, had lost sight of its importance, and nearly lost his life because

of his negligence. See Exodus 4:24-26.

HONK!

-- If you've ever walked along any part of the route of the Exodus down the

west coast of the Sinai Peninsula, as I have, it would quickly dawn on you

that this is no stroll in the park. If you're part of a throng of as many as a few

million, who literally never know from one minute to the next when they will be

instructed to stop, or for how long, or when they will be instructed to pick up

and start walking again, it would not take a 300 IQ to realize that the last thing

you need is a million or more people in simultaneous recuperation following a

mass, nationwide, simultaneous circumcision. In the US, we can't even function

coherently as a nation after a day of eating turkey, or a night of celebrating the

New Year.

-- If you read carefully ... always a good idea if you want to try to understand

whether it really says what you've always been told it says ... you find that

circumcision was indeed maintained in Egypt, and those who came out at the

Exodus were circumcised. But those who were born in the wilderness, and

comprised the majority of the population who arrived at the promised land

40 years later, were not.

-- And by the way ... Moses did not "reign" over Israel.

Are Mt Sinai and Jebel el-Lawz the same or different mountains?

Answer

They are different mountains. In the Bible it is called Mt Sinai, and also called 'Horeb', but it is NOT the Mt Sinai of today in the Sinai Peninsula: that was named by Constantine's wife Catherine as a result of a vision. It is actually 'Jebel el Lawz' in Saudi Arabia.

Who is Abraham the son of Moses?

The Biblical Abraham is regarded as the founding patriarch of the Israelites whom God chose to bless, and to make into a blessing for all peoples on Earth. Moses, however, was born '''after''' Abraham died; Moses was most likely one of Abraham's descendents, not the other way around. Perhaps there's another Abraham son of Moses?

How is the sermon on the mount related to Moses?

On the sermon on the mount, Jesus preached updates from the law of moses. He wasn't changing them, he was just trying to make them better and take them further. For example, one of the laws of moses was DO NOT MURDER but Jesus said EVEN THINKING ABOUT HARMING OR KILLING ANOTHER MAKES YOU EQUALLY AS GUILTY. Others are also to do with adultery, Non-violence, Going the extra mile and Loving your neighbour

Where in the Bible was Moses anointed as a priest?

Though there may be many things one could say in answer, I found none better than contained in the Insight to the Scriptures encyclopaedic reference work published by the Watchtower Society Volume 1, pages 438-439 under the subject heading Christ:

An exceptional use of the title "Christ" is Paul's reference to Moses rather than Jesus, when he writes: "He [Moses] esteemed the reproach of the Christ [Khri·stou´, "Anointed One"] as riches greater than the treasures of Egypt; for he looked intently toward the payment of the reward." (Heb 11:26) Moses was never anointed with any literal oil as were the high priests and kings of Israel. (Ex 30:22-30; Le 8:12; 1Sa 10:1; 16:13) But neither was Jesus nor were his followers, and yet the Scriptures speak of them as having been anointed. (Ac 10:38; 2Co 1:21) In these latter cases their anointing with God's holy spirit served as an appointment by God, or a commission, even though literal anointing oil was not used. So, in a similar sense Moses received a special appointment. Paul, therefore, could say of Moses that he was Jehovah's anointed one, or Christ, the recipient of a commission given to him at the burning bush, which appointment he considered to be greater riches than all the treasures of Egypt.---Ex 3:2--4:17.

My additional comment: Though a Levite, Moses was never a Priest and was therefore never anointed to be or to become a Priest. He was a Mediator and a prophet. Anointing is an appointment to a God-ordained office be that priestly, or royal as were kings. Similarly, Jesus' anointing (becoming a Christ or Messiah) with Holy Spirit was a token of a future appointment in Heaven that a person of flesh and blood could never fulfill. 1 Cor 15:50;

I used to be a Jehovah's Witness for many a decade. Not an associate now for a couple of years because the Bible/manual is not in support of many fundamental Christian doctrines. I rather prefer and agree with the Bible. I have therefore been 'disfellowshipped' and shunned by them for good. However, when something is Scripturally accurate it must prevail whatever its source. Hence the above reference.

How did Moses pass on God's wisdom?

Through the law covenant or the Mosaic Law, found at:Exodus Chapters 25-29; Leviticus Chapters 8, 9.

There were so much more than Ten Commandments given to the nation of Israel. (About 600 laws and statues). There were laws on hygiene, quarantine of infected person, laws on disposal of all wastes, (some laws which weren't discovered as carriers of disease until the 18 and 19 century) as well as laws against incest, which brought about 'uncleanness' and birth defects, as well as the proper way to worship Him and so much more. The Law Covenant was cleaning and refining His people (the nation of Israel, at that time) to become the ancestors of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. God indeed passed along a great deal of wisdom through Moses.
