What does the word carabiners in mountain climbing mean?

Caribiners (also known as karibiners, biners or krabs) are metal clips used to link things together when climbing, ie a rope to an anchor point, a belay plate to a harness or simply to clip equipment securly to a climbers harness.

HMS krabs are most often used by a belayer, or to build secure anchor points for belay, while snapgate and wiregate krabs are often clipped at each end of a sling to form a quickdraw. One end of this clips to the climbers rope, the other end to a piece of protection placed on the rock face. Up to 12 of these may be placed on a standard climbing pitch, in order to stop a climber hitting the ground if they were to take a fall.

How do you rappel without a harness?

There is a technique called the Dülfersitz in Europe, where you run the rope down between your legs, round the back of your thigh and from there diagonally across your chest and over your shoulder. The arm belonging to the shoulder that the rope pass over is held behind your back with the hand grasping the rope, and the other hand grasps the rope in front of you. It feels a bit awkward, but as long as you're wearing reasonably thick clothes it's not too bad. There's enough friction to give a controlled descent too.

Can you climb mountains in your trainers?

That depends - if by 'climb' you mean a steep walk on well worn and paths with an even surface, then a sturdy pair of hiking-style trainers with good grip should suffice. Boots however are essential where good ankle support is needed; when the terrain is uneven or rocky, where it's wet or where the gradient is steep. This ankle support is especially important coming down a steep slope.

If you're actually climbing i.e. both hands and feet are required to ascend, then don't attempt it in trainers. Rock-climbers (as opposed to mountain climbers) wear very snug tight fitting light shoes specially made to allow the foot very controlled purchase on the rock face. Essential. If you're climbing the mountain rather than just specific rock routes, then boots are again hugely important and should reflect both the surface you're climbing and the weather and surface conditions (rock, snow, ice).
