How do you judge rock climbing competitions?
A rock climbing competition is either red point or onsight. If it is a red point comp, then many routes are set, with different point values, relative to their difficulty. Their peers sign off on the routes that they have completed. Climbers usually have anywhere from 3-4 hours to climb as many routes as they want, and their top five point values are taken as scores. In this instance, judges simply stand by and make sure participants are not cheating, or if the competition is for sport climbing, not bouldering, they will also belay. In an onsight competition, participants are held in isolation, so that they may not see the routes they will climb beforehand. Once they are called out to climb, they will usually have three routes to climb, and a time limit to climb each one, along with some rest time allowed in between. In this instance, judges mark the highest hold that the climber is able to control (hold on to for more than a moment), and this becomes their score for that route. That score and their scores on the two other climbs are tallied up. In the end, the winners are determined by the highest scores, and ties are broken by the number of falls taken on each qualifying route.
Is mountain climbing a solo sport?
Mountain Climbing in all of its forms is usually more successful when participated in as a team or group activity. There are numerous risks involved and one should ALWAYS have a partner to belay them in the critical areas of a route.
Even when doing an alpine climb, it only takes a moment to sprain a muscle, twist a knee or slip and break a bone. Without proper back up, this can become a life threatening experience.

Can nylon ropes replaced by steel for mountain climbing?
No.
Climbing ropes are built to stretch. If you took a 15-20ft fall on a rope without any stretch (like with a steel cable) it would catch you just fine, but it would also snap your spine.
Newton's second law: Force equals mass times acceleration. If there is no stretch your (de)acceleration is very high, this results in forces that are very high.
My organs and bones don't like very high forces.

Is dumbarton rock the hardest climb in the world?
One of the lines on Dumbarton rock was Greaded as the hardest Trad route under the adjective grading system. The Route was called rhapsidy and it was graded at E11 7a by Dave MacLeod, there has been a suggestion that it was overgraded Now James Pearson has claimed Walk of Life is an E12 7a though the same debate rages.
MacLeods latest route Echo Wall, as yet ungraded may prove to be even harder.
Argument is intense at this end of the grades, should a tiny jump in dificulty from E10 at this level mean a whole grade jump to E11 or simply be called a very difficult E10. I am undecided.
It is also important to remember, with an adjective grade other factors than pure dificulty are considerred. And the tech grade the 7a is only for the hardest move. It could be a whole route of 7a moves, or lots of 4a moves with one really hard move. And it could be really easy climbing with no protection, or nails climbing with lots of proctection availiable. So Rhapsidy may be easier to climb than something with a bit more gear. Though at this level it is thought that the sftey level is less considerred when grading.

How long does it take to climb Mount Washington?
It depends upon the mode: roadway, railway or hiking. The cog railway (operating since 1860s) takes about an hour from Marshfield Station. Driving up the toll road has been done by competitors in 12 minutes, but the average is about a half hour and the same back down. These routes are NOT open all year long.
Hiking time depends upon which route is selected and the weather conditions. The shortest routes are 4 or 5 miles. The AMC trail guide says it will take 4 and a half hours from Pinkham Notch to the summit via Tuckerman Ravine (six hours twenty mins round trip), or 4 hours ten mins via Lion Head Trail or Huntington Ravine, or 5 hours via the Davis Path and Boott Spur, six hours 40 minutes via Crawford Path (Mt. Clinton Rd), 4 hrs ten mins from Base Road via the Ammonoosuc Ravine (7 hours round trip).
There are dozens of branches and combinations, some of which are too dangerous to consider during winter.
