What happens in each of the five phases of cardiac muscle depolarization?

PHASE0(RAPID DEPOLARIZATION)

due to opening of fast voltage gated sodium channels

PHASE1(INITIAL REPOLARIZATION)

due to closure of sodium channels while loss of potassium is goingon ,making the cell polarized.

PHASE2(PLATEAU)

due to opening of calcium channels. influx of calcium neutralizes the effect of out going potassium so prolonged plateau is achieved.

PHASE3(FINAL RE POLARIZATION)

due to closure of calcium channels and continue loss of potassium makes the inside of cell more negative resulting in polarization.

PHASE4(RMP)

eventually cell returns to resting membrane potential due to K efflux and cell is ready for next cycle

How do you test a biceps reflex?

The triceps muscle reflex can be performed as follows:

1. The patient's upper arm is abducted (extended out to the side - away from the body)

2. The forearm is allowed to hang toward the floor.

3. The tendons which attach the triceps muscle to the elbow joint should be facing basically upward (toward the ceiling) at this point. These tendons can be identified by pressing near the elbow joint and feeling for the "rubbery" cord-like structures.

4. Place the finger firmly against one of these tendons, then strike the finger digit with the reflex hammer.

5. Watch for the hanging hand to move away from the body slightly. This is the reflex.

What is origin and insertion of muscle?

Do you apply heat or ice to a pulled muscle?

You always ice muscle, tendon, and ligament damage to prevent swelling and further potential damage.

It used to be that after the first day or two after an injury, you would apply heat to bring healing blood circulation to the area.

It has been found in the past couple of years that ice is somewhat better at bringing healing blood to the damaged area. Either heat or cold will be OK to apply after the first day or two after the injury.

What do the intercostals do?

A muscle cell is most correctly referred to as?
