Yes, nascar race cars have a reverse. They are standard 4-speed Manual transmissions, in a not-so-standard car.
They are anything but standard four-speeds. Everyone uses Jerico transmissions, which are made for ease of changing the gear cluster. If you want a different gear ratio in the car, you open the little door in the floorplan, open the top of the transmission, and do your work. Very simple and direct. Red Vogt was the mechanic for Red Byron, NASCAR's first champion. He owned a garage on Hemphill avenue in Atlanta where moonshiners running shine from Dawsonville, GA into Atlanta could get their cars "supped up" to outrun law enforcement. The owner of Red Byrons car was Raymond Parks a known moonshiner who still owns a liquor store on Northside drive in Atlanta. Parks, Byron and Vogt were NASCARs first 'team'. These men all met with Bill France in Daytona at Hotel on the beach. They all came together to form the oganization that we all know as NASCAR today. EDIT: This is a bit of an ambiguous question, do you mean live attendees, single day events, total season attendance at all professional events combined, world wide television audience?? You need to qualify your question a little bit, but I'll add what I can.
A) I have a major issue with the claim that NASCAR boasts more viewers than soccer. NASCAR can legitimately claim 200-300,000 live spectators per weekend, however, with all of NASCARs competitors (drivers) at the same event every weekend, NASCAR's live attendance in no instance eclipses 400,000. When you count of all the professional soccer events throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and the Americas, live attendance at professional events is well into the tens of millions every weekend. Throw in the televised audiences and I defy you to prove to me that NASCAR exceeds Soccer's reach (even when only counting professional events).
B) The most viewed LIVE professional sport in the USA is actually rodeo. Yes, rodeo. This is because rodeo is a grass roots professional sport with points-events in many many small towns in every state in the nation, every weekend through a very long season. Each event pays "day money" so it is in fact truly professional. It is also structured so that nearly every competitor who competes in any of these events can accrue "points" (total cash winnings, in reality) toward the national title in Las Vegas in October, the NFR (National Finals Rodeo), where the winner of the ten day event can take home over a million dollars. Rodeo however has literally no tv coverage outside of the NFR in October, and therefore can't even be compared to NASCARs weekly televised count. C) Even the Tour de France boasts more live-event attendees for its yearly competition than NASCAR ticks at the box office for an entire season of event attendees. (over 15 Million people line the streets of France's myriad small towns over the Tour de France's 21 day span). HOWEVER, when you count television coverage, or count live attendees for a single day, at a single geographic event, NASCAR is the largest (it has to be qualified pretty heavily to hold it's "title" as the "Biggest" spectator sport in the world).
With seats for roughly 200 thousand spectators at its marquis events like Daytona and Taladega, there is no other sport that can put live fans in front of the action for a single event quite like NASCAR. Unfortunately I don't have the numbers on televised soccer viewership, but again, I'd be willing to bet on soccer as the true winner of Biggest Spectator Sport in the World (let's call it "The Most Widely Viewed Professional Sport on any Single Day Counting TV and Live Attendees"). Americans tend to forget that there's a lot more world out there than what is contained between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans!!
