What is 6ohm in amps?

Ohms is a measurement of resistance between the amp and speakers. Most home audio is 8 ohm, if you run 4 or 6 ohm speakers you cut resistance down and get more power out of the amp. Say your stereo is 100X2 @ 8ohm, if you use 4 ohm speakers you should get 50% more power BUT the amp is working twice as hard and can burn up.

The metal junction boxes that we are installing receptacles in have no ground screw just holes in the back for mounting and knockouts How do you properly ground j boxes?

Make your own ground screw. Use a #8 x 1/2"or #10 x 1/2" sheet metal pan head screw and screw it into one of the holes in the back of the box. In the back of the box you might see a raised portion where the original ground screw came out of, use that hole. Wrap the ground wire around the pan head screw and it will tighten up very nicely and make a good ground.

There is an electrical power outlet in the rear of your 2003 trail blazer can this outlet be use to run an electric winch?

You can use any of the electrical outlets in your 2003 Chevrolet TrailBlazer to power a 12 volt electric winch. Be sure to keep your motor running when running the winch. Winches are a big drain on the battery. You may even need to accelerate a bit while if the winch is pulling very hard.

Recently Westin Automotive introduced a new line of winches. These winches were formerly marketed as T-Max Winches. You can check this new product line out at WestinWinches.com.

Hot tub 4 wire hook up?

This is one that should be left for a qualified person. As the job can effect life and limb a permit should be taken out and the job inspected. Failure to do this can leave you responsible if someone should get hurt due to faulty wiring or practices. Sorry, get an electrician and insist he takes out a permit and an inspection is done.

Are in floor electrical outlets allowed?

Yes, they are in fact very common in commercial buildings and are becoming more popular in custom homes. The thing is the floor box and cover plates are specialized and expensive. The plates are typically a brass alloy. You can check with someone like Home Depot but I don't know if they stock those parts.

What does 120 vac mean?

v = volts a = alternating c = current vac is what the lights and appliances in your house use. Your TV uses 120VAC. 120vac is the accepted standard of electric current commonly used through out the U>S>. Vac speaks of ac or alternating current voltage.

Is polarity important with fluorescent under cabinet lights?

Yes, polarity is always important. Many under cabinet fluorescent fixtures are small enough to use a small transformer rather than a ballast. But even then, the transformer will have a longer life if it's wired with correct polarity.

How do you insulate an electrical outlet?

If the outlet is on an outside wall there is a plastic boot that goesaround the outlet. The purpose of this boot is to keep the vapour barrier intact. The edges of this boot are then taped to the wall vapour barrier to make a complete air seal. The insulation goes behind the outlet boot which allows the wall R value to remain the same as the rest of the wall.

4 fluorescent lights won't come on and 2 other fixtures do what causes this?

A. no power to the fixture that won't turn on. B bad electrical connection. c. burned out fluorescent lamps d. bad lamp holders e. bad ballast f. etc.

How do you wire 30 amp RV plug into 70 amp square d breaker box?

I mean no disrespect, but if you have to ask this question, then you should probably be calling an electrician who will be able to safely do this.

Can a fire start in a junction box?

That is the most likely place for a fire to start. It is at this place in a circuit that mechanical connections break down. Loose splices create oxidation on the wires, oxidation creates a higher resistance creating a current draw through the resistance. This heat can become high enough to melt the insulation off of the wires. The heat build up is accumulative and the current might not be enough to trip the breaker. Junction boxes used to be made of steel which contained any flames from the surrounding wood structure. Now days boxes are made of a non flammable plastic which are sealed to cut off any oxygen to a fire that may start in the junction box. This is why the code calls for any splices that are made in a wire to be made in a junction box, and the junction box has to be accessible. There are documented cases where the junction box has been buried behind sheet rock and plaster walls and a fire has started and no one noticed until the fire burned through the wall.

What equipment do you use to dig a trench that is 18 inches deep for power lines?

A shovel. If the soil is of a loam variety then a machine called a Ditch Witch will do the job very nicely. It has a digging mechanism that looks like a chainsaw. The unit is self propelled and the digging depth can be pre-set to stay at the depth it is set up for. A small bucket on a back hoe is used in more rocky soil. Power lines should be set at a depth of thirty six inches in vehicular areas and 24 inches in non vehicular areas. These depths are for voltages of 750 or less.

How high from the floor do you install an entry light?

Standard rule, top to the fixture same height as top to the door.

In selectecting the wire size for a line cord you should remember that?

The wire size is large enough to carry the load current and that the cord is properly voltage rated.

Will a 4 ton condenser work with a 3 ton furnace?

It may run. But not efficiently or to capacity as there will probably not be enough air flow. You also run the risk of ruining the compressor by flooding it, as residential a/c units are notorious for not having hi and low pressure cut-out switches.

Can you measure amp in the DC?

Yes but the meter has to go in series with the load. There is a new clamp on amp meter being introduced, that will measure larger DC amperages without opening the circuit.

What is does the letters NC stand for in electrical terms?

I have never heard of the term NC in electrical. i am a Honda tech and have never used it. if i had to take a wild guess i would say it means No Current. But who really knows :(

It is terminology that is associated with relays. NC or N.C. stands for normally closed, likewise NO or N.O. stands for normally open, C stands for the common contact.

Is it necessary to balance a house fuse panel to save electricity and if so why and how is it done?

A balanced house panel should be the ultimate goal. It will not save you electricity as the watt meter on the house monitors the use of power from both legs of the incoming power. To balance a panel you want the current from L1 to Neutral to equal L2 to Neutral. The neutral carries the unbalanced current between L1 and L2. A perfectly balanced panel will have no current on the neutral. It is done by knowing what the current draw is on every breaker. Then they are physically positioned so that they equal each other on the opposite leg. e.g. breaker 1 on leg L1 = 5 amps, breaker 2 on leg L2 = 10 amps, breaker 3 on leg L1 = 10 amps, breaker 4 on leg L2 = 5 amps. Total up all amperages on L1 and then on L2 , if they are equal then the panel is balanced with no current on the neutral.

What is the maximum current recommended for 30 gauge copper wire?

Sorry, there is no such wire size as "30 gauge" in the AWG (American Wire Gauge) system. For the ampacity rating of all standard conductor sizes, go to Table 310-16 of the National Electric Code. If you mean what wire size will carry 30 amps then a #10 copper wire insulation rating of 90 degree C is rated at 30 amps.

What size feeder wire do you use to run 100 ft overhead to a 100 amp sub panel with 240V and 120V if you need under 70 amps total?

Answer for USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hz power supply service. You will need a #3 Triplex ACSR (Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced) cable.

As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed.

If you do this work yourself, always turn off the power

at the breaker box/fuse panel BEFORE you attempt to do any work AND

always use an electrician's test meter having metal-tipped probes

(not a simple proximity voltage indicator)

to insure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOB

SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY

REFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.

How do you create 120V from 240V 3 wire L1 L2 G in a residential system?

The proper terminology is L1,L2,N. N is for neutral and it is this wire that is grounded. The 120 voltage is already there to use in a residential system. The voltage measurement from the L1 to N will give you 120 volts. Also from L2 to N will give you 120 volts and as you know from L1 to L2 will give you 240 volts. Single pole breakers in the panel board starting at the top, alternate between L1 and L2 all the way down to the bottom. These breakers all have 120 volt outputs. If you plug a 2 pole breaker into two slots then you get 240 outputs because L1 and L2 are adjacent to one another.
