Noah's Ark

Noah's Ark is a vessel describes in Genesis chapters 6-9 of the Hebrew Bible. In the story, God instructs a man named Noah to build an ark to providing a save-haven for Noah, his family, and all species of animals. Once Noah and his fellow travelers are aboard the ark, God enacts a massive flood, destroying all other living things on the planet. The inhabitants of the ark go on to repopulate the world after the great flood.

Who are Noah's son?

That would depend upon the translation/version of Scripture read. Some would clearly indicate Japheth to be eldest while others would indicate Shem.

Genesis 10:21New King James Version (NKJV)

21 And children were born also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder.

Further, Genesis 9:24-25 is thought to tell the reader Ham is the youngest son of Noah. But others will interpret these verses to indicate Noah was speaking of Ham's youngest son, Canaan whom He cursed.

What was the last unconditional bible covenant?

The new covenant with Jesus Christ our LORD.

There are a lot of covenants in the Pentateuch (1st 5 books). Adam & Eve, and then Noah after the flood. But then comes the Patriarch, Abraham...God makes a covenant with Abraham and his descendants...from Abraham comes Jacob, who is the father of Israel. Israel is enslaved in Egypt and God sends Moses to free them. At Sinai (Horeb - same thing), god writes the Decalogue (10 commandments) for Israel. Moses comes down to find them worshiping the golden calf (Egyptian god). The only people who didn't bow down to the idol were the tribe of Levi - the Levites. So, God establishes the Levites as a priestly order over the other tribes of Israel because of their loyalty and holiness. Now we're in the book of Leviticus (book for/of Levi-Levites). The first half of the book spells out the duties of the newly ordained Levitical priests, while the second half is the law by which the other tribes must obey to make reparation for the golden calf. Then the people are about to enter the Promised Land (Canaa) and they're too afraid because of the "giants" living there. God punishes them for not following through by having them wander in the desert for 40 years (so the first sinful generation could die off because they had rejected God so many times and He wanted to shower their children with His love and blessings). This happens, and then we enter the book of Numbers, where two census' are taken. Then the people are at the edge of Canaa - again - and they decide to yoke themselves to the pagans on the Plains of Moab. Phineas, a Levitical Priest, kills them because God ordered them hanged and no one would do it so he speared them. God rewards Phineas' piety and makes a covenant with his descendants. Now into Deuteronomy....God re-establishes the Levitical line from Phineas as the royal priesthood of Israel and makes a revised covenant (because the peoples' hearts were so hard by now they couldn't even begin to follow the covenant in Leviticus) allowing certain "evils" i.e. divorce, etc...through Moses and then the Israelites enter Canaa without him (his punishment for disobedience earlier). This covenant, made with the Israeli people through Moses and the Levitical line of Phineas, blessed by God, is the covenant that was the law of the land for Israel until the coming of Christ, who said, "I have not come to abolish the law," speaking of the law of Deuteronomy, "but to fulfill it." Later, at the Last Supper, Christ says, "Take; eat. This is My body, which will be given up for you....Take; drink. This is the cup of My blood - the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of Me." so, Christ - who is God - establishes a new covenant through His body and blood with us and calls it, "...the new and everlasting covenant." Pax Christi....AMDG!

What were the colors of Noah's sons?

The book of Genesis didn't describeanyone of the people who lived at the time of Noah. For example, there was no description of Noah's sons and daughters-in-law. So there was no indication of distinctive colors or an array of colors for any of the people on board the ark.

If Noah collected a pair of each animal to repopulate the world why did Noah sacrificed only the clean animals after the flood receeded Genesis 8 Verse 20?

Everybody seems to remember the pairs and two by two part, but don't remember the entire wording of what Noah was commanded to do. Genesis 7 1 The LORD then said to Noah, "Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation. 2 Take with you seven pair of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and two of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate, 3 and also seven of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth. 4 Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living creature I have made." 8:20 And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.

8:21 And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth ; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. According to the law given to Moses (which includes much more than the famous Ten Commandments), only clean animals were to be sacrificed to the Lord. As the passages quoted above indicate, Noah "took of" or "took from" the collection of clean critters. This doesn't mean he sacrificed all of them.

If all the vegetation were destroyed during the almost one year of being submerged in Noah's flood what did the herbivorous animals ate when they exited the ark?

The short answer is, it regrew, either from vegetative cuttings which floated on rafts of vegetation or from preserved seed.

It also must be remembered that Noah did not immediately disembark from the ark and so there was time for plants and grasses to start to regrow. There was a large expanse of land with relatively little fauna to eat the plants which grew upon it. In the relatively close proximity of the ark itself the grass etc would of course have been eaten down but in a relatively short time the earth would have been covered once again. The need to go searching for food would also have assisted in the dispersion of the non-domesticated animals post-flood.

What is the estimated number of animals on Noah's ark?

A:If the story of Noah's Ark had really happened as described in the Bible, every air-breathing animal alive today would have been represented on the Ark, including birds, snakes, lizards, worms, centipedes, all kinds of insects and so on. Of course, the Hebrews who developed this story could not have known about ardvaaks, cormorants, koalas or kangaroos. they would not have known that there were several species and subspecies of elephants and rhinoceruses.

The Avibase database contains records about 10,000 species and 22,000 subspecies of birds in the world. In addition, some birds have become extinct in recent centuries, while many in remote areas have not yey been catalogued. If we regard the story of Noah's Ark as literally true, there must have been over 80,000 birds representing over 40,000 species and subspecies. They range from the ostrich and the even larger, extinct moa down to the smallest finches.

As an estimate, there would have to have been more than a million animals, all of which would have needed to be returned to exactly the right location on the globe after the Flood subsided.

Another Answer:

Considering a statistical approach for this question, it is easy to see that Noah's Ark could have carried its intended cargo. A study by John Woodmorappe ( Noah's Ark: A Feasibility Study, 1996, p. 7), indicates the total of the animals that Noah would have needed in the ark to meet the biblical requirements (see Genesis 6) would number between 2,000 and 16,000-not in the hundreds of thousands or even millions as many reason to have been necessary.

Genesis 6:17-20 - New King James Version (NKJV)

17 And behold, I Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which isthe breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die.18 But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark-you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20 Of the birds after their kind, of animals after their kind, and of every creeping thing of the earth after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive.

A cursory reading of Genesis 6 will reveal some often overlooked, but very important details. The Bible doesn't state anywhere that Noah had to take on board the Ark all or every living creature. There were only three requirements for the animals to be loaded on the ark. They had to be 'air-breathing' and of the same biblical kind and only land-dwelling - all ocean creatures were unaffected. A biblical 'kind' is akin to a 'genus' in science today. Even evolutionary scientist attest that every 'dog' today came from a single pair and taken farther, all 'canine' family (wolves, bears, foxes, dogs, etc) could come from a basic 'kind' of pairing over time.

The Ark was the size of a WWII US Aircraft Carrier and therefore had more than enough space to house the terrestrial creatures, including the 8 humans over the year plus conveniently. After their release, God 'de-pacifies' the animals and puts the fear of man into them. He scatters them on their way (timing unknown) to their particular geographic locations just as He did to man (beginning of the dispersal with later various migrations) in the Tower of Babel story.
