Noah's Ark

Noah's Ark is a vessel describes in Genesis chapters 6-9 of the Hebrew Bible. In the story, God instructs a man named Noah to build an ark to providing a save-haven for Noah, his family, and all species of animals. Once Noah and his fellow travelers are aboard the ark, God enacts a massive flood, destroying all other living things on the planet. The inhabitants of the ark go on to repopulate the world after the great flood.

823 Questions

Why did Noah put only two of each animal on the ark and how did he keep them from mating?

Because God told him to put two of every 'unclean' beast but sevens of all the beasts considered 'clean'. Also the birds were represented in sevens. As for the mating we aren't told but there's no reason why they wouldn't have. Two Genesis 6:19 Of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark. Genesis 7:8, 9, 15 Of clean beast and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowl ... there went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God commanded Noah. This verse, God commanded Noah to take both clean and unclean animals in pairs. Seven Genesis 7:2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take thee by sevens, the male and his female. Note; Seven is an odd number and cannot be a pair. There will one odd animal left behind with no pair. More than likely these were used for sacrifice after the ark landed on dry ground, as at this point mankind had not been given permission to eat meat.

How many females were on Noahs ark?

Yes, there were at least one of each sex of the different kinds. Genesis 7:2

Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female. 3Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.

How many years did it take Noah to build the ark?

The Book of Genesis describes the Ark as a huge and complex wooden container around 130 metres long. Noah had only himself and his three sons, who would also have had to work long hours to produce food for the family. If there ever really was an Ark, it must have taken years to build.

What is Noah remembered for?

Noah is famous in the bible, because he and his family escaped the floods .

Did Noah have woodpeckers on the ark?

Woodpeckers are not specifically mentioned. Whatever birds were on the ark would have had the genetic material from which our current woodpeckers developed via natural selection and may have had some of the same characteristics, but woodpeckers themselves as we know them need not have been on the ark. The Bible states that various numbers of each kind were taken on the ark, and kinds do not equate to our modern classification system. The answer is that it is not possible to precisely know, but it is certain that at least their ancestral kind of bird were.

How long did Noah stay in the before floods completely dried?

The waters receded sufficiently for the ark to land and the people and animals to emerge after a number of months. Some say God sent a wind in order to hasten the evaporation. The oceans and deep underwater trenches could now accommodate much of the flood waters. Additionally, there are vast amounts of water held in artesian basins and huge underground seas such as one below East Asia which is the size of the Arctic Ocean. All of these changes would have hastened the removal of flood waters from the earth and reduced the drying time considerably.

What does the Noah and the Ark story teach us about God?

We can read the story of Noah and the Ark literally or allegorically.

If we read the story literally, it tells us that God's powers are somewhat limited, just as they are in the second creation story in Genesis. An all-powerful God could have simply destroyed those people he thought unfit to live, without requiring the forces of nature. Nothing further was gained by creating a Flood that would destroy even the most harmless living creatures.

If we read the story allegorically, then it symbolises God's anger at evil in the world. Some say that by saving Noah and his family, and by creating the rainbow, the story also symbolises God's love for mankind.

What did noah bring on to the Ark?

Noah brought on to the Ark, his wife, his three sons and their wives, plus:

  • two of each sort of animal into the Ark - cattle, fowl and every living thing (Genesis 6:19-22), or
  • seven of each clean animal, but only two of each unclean animal (Genesis 7:1-5).

The reason for this difference is that there are actually two different Flood accounts woven together, so that unless read carefully they seem to be just one account.

The verses attributed to the Priestly author are: Genesis 6:9-22, 7:6, 7:8-9, 7:11, 7:13-16a, 7:18-21, 7:24, 8:1-2a, 8:3b-5, 8:7, 8:13a, 8:14-19, 9:1-17.

The verses attributed to the Yahwist are: Genesis 6:5-8, 7:1-5, 7:7, 7:10, 7:12, 7:16b-17, 7:22-23, 8:2b-3a, 8:6, 8:8-12, 8:13b, 8:20-22.

Did god tell Noah that it would rain 40 days and 40 nights?

God sent the rain in order to destroy all creation that was not in the ark.

What mountain did Noah land the ark?

It has been believed even in modern times that some of the ark's remains are on Mount Ararat. But probably the original ark rotted away. The remains found may be those of a shrine honoring the ark.

Was the whole world flooded when Noah built his ark?

After the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden they were cast out. Cain slew his brother Abel and moved away. Adam and Eve had more children and chapter 6 of Genesis tells us that, "Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth...." From Adam and Eve many persons were born. (Persons lived long lives during this period before the flood and it is supposed that intermarriage occurred at first to produce people and soon the earth or this portion of earth was filled with people). Then in Genesis 6:5-7, " Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually....." God said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth....."

God told Noah to build an ark because he was going to destroy the earth with water. So Noah and his 3 sons built the ark and they and their wives and all of the animals God wanted saved entered the ark and soon the flood came and destroyed everything else.

God told Noah the people on the earth were wicked and He was going to destroy

them, but told Noah to build an ark so he and his family could be saved.

Did all of Noah's sons get in the ark?

"On the very same day Noah and Noah's sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and Noah's wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark."...so THREE (3).

Did Noah's Ark rest on Mount Ararat?

im not sure but its under great security because they dnt want the bible to be proved

Improved Answer:

Scientists have been able to examine pieces of the supposed Noah's Ark and have found it to have similar qualities of wood that would have been used to make the vessel. Currently it is difficult for anyone to do further investigation since the locals don't want anyone going up their mountain.

Is there any evidence outside the bible about the Noah's flood?

Leaving the Bible Aside for a MomentIf the Flood of Noah's day was a real historical event and was worldwide we would expect to find some or all of the following evidence on the earth:
  • Lots of sedimentary (water deposited) rock all over the earth.
  • Evidence through fossilization of rapid burial of millions of organisms in the above strata.
  • Sufficient water on the planet to 'do the job'.
  • Very little evidence of pre-flood civilization i.e. culture and language arising relatively recently and suddenly.
  • Very different climate on the earth in the past.
  • Many flood stories in the various people groups around the world.
  • Lack of Genetic variability supporting descent from a small population
  • Mutation rates suggesting a recent origin for mankind
  • massive vulcanism in the past

All of the above are in fact amply demonstrated to be so.

In relation to the amount of water, a flat earth would be covered to a height of 1 1/2 miles. Add to this the recent discovery of a massive ocean underneath East Asia (estimated to be similar in size to the arctic ocean). This discovery suggests there may be a lot more water in the planet than we know about.

In relation to climate, there are coal deposits in Antarctica, as well as common scientific recognition that the climate of the planet has radically changed in many regions from the past (although of course the time-frames given are in most cases different).

Regarding fossilization, it is clear that many organisms were buried both rapidly and catastrophically. Massive fossil graveyards speak of rapid burial and of specimens being washed into their final position by water, a lot of water. One alone could always be a local flood and some may indeed be so, but there are many of these around the world.

Lack of real genetic variability suggests that humans have arisen from one individual. Some studies of mutation rates in mitochondrial DNA (mt DNA) have suggested that the human population could not be as old as normally suggested since we would not exist. The human genome shows evidence of running down. Thousands of genetic disorders are documented. This documentation due to modern medical science demonstrates the true nature of our genetic make up. This relates to the flood since this is believed to have happened in the relatively recent past. The state of human genetics as science reveals it is not inconsistent with this.

The massive vulcanism in the past is an acknowledged fact. It is generally interpreted as fitting into a long-age paradigm. Under a different interpretation 'the fountains of the great deep' which are specifically connected with the flood would relate to massive vulcanism. Contrary to popular misconception, a high proportion of all volcanic eruptions (even today) contain water (around 80% or higher).

Answer

For the sake of balance on the issue, I am going to use the above reasonings but demonstrate that there is indeed no evidence for Noah's flood.

  • Lots of sedimentary (water deposited) rock all over the earth: There is indeed sedimentary rock all over the planet, however, there are not significant amounts of it stemming from the same time period which would demonstrate a truly global flood occuring at one point in history.
  • Evidence through fossilization of rapid burial of millions of organisms in the above strata: Again, this is true, but just 'cause you find a couple things buried doesn't mean that they were necessarily buried at the same time. Not only that, but the process by which sediment turns to sedimentary rock takes hundreds of years (on the low end). If we accept that a flood happened as portrayed in the bible, there is no way of knowing if all of the sediment in a particular band came from the exact 40-day period.
  • Sufficient water on the planet to 'do the job': There may be sufficient water on earth to cause a flood, but to have the dramatic rains of Noah's flood happen over a 40 day period you would have to have VAST quantities in the atmosphere. So much in fact that the sunlight could not make it to Earth. You have to accept the existence of something called "the firmament" which was essentially an atmosphere of water that surrounded the earth from the days of creation up till the flood. This cannot exist based on what we know about physics. So if the flood happened, prior to the flood the laws of physics had to be DRAMATICALLY different than they are now, or that God intervened and made these things possible.
  • Very little evidence of pre-flood civilization i.e. culture and language arising relatively recently and suddenly: This is absolutely not true. Noah's flood would have happened approximately 3000 BC, at which time there were numerous civilizations including: The chinese, the Japanese, the Indian, African tribal civilizations, Egypt, Phoenician, Sumerian, Celtic, Incan and Aztec. Many of these groups existed continuously through the time period in which the flood supposedly occured and none of them recorded anything of significance.
  • Very different climate on the earth in the past: There was a different climate in the past, but one must remember that the earth regularly goes through ice ages and warming periods. Depending on where you look at the climate/temperature curve (typically based off the oxygen and other trace gases burried in the polar ice caps at different levels) there were many times over the last 6000 years in which the environment was pretty much the same as it is today. In fact you have to go back over 12000 years (before the earth was formed if you accept the chronology in the Bible which puts the creation of the world at somewhere around 6,014 years ago) before there is even any really significant changes to climate.
  • Many flood stories in the various people groups around the world: There are indeed many flood stories found amongst a vast array of cultures. However, some of them (including a few of the cultures I mentioned earlier) wrote their flood stories some thousand years before the flood of Noah was supposed to happen. And other cultures wrote their flood story having taken place well after Noah. Early man had no control over the elements and so there are many tales of floods, fires, earthquakes and other dramatic events found in other cultures. Dragons never existed either, and yet nearly every culture has some form of the dragon. These are what we call "archetypal" ideas and seem to be a ubiquitous part of human nature.
  • Lack of Genetic variability supporting descent from a small population: This is true, but would also be just as easily explained if one accepts that people evolved from a common ancestor. One factor weighing against the "descendants of noah" idea though, is that there is actually too much variability for us all to have descended from the same family a few thousand years ago.
  • Mutation rates suggesting a recent origin for mankind: We are actually finding more and more evidence that homo sapiens sapiens (our species) is actually older than previously thought. That aside, there is no real consensus on what an "average mutation rate" really is within the scientific community. We do have modern trends but they give us little to no indication to what the rate was even a few hundred years ago, let alone thousands.
  • massive vulcanism in the past: This is also true, but implies we don't have massive vulcanism in the present. In terms of geologic averages, our current rate is a little lower than in the recent past (last thousand years or so) but not significantly so. Also, there is no link between vulcanism and flooding, so this one is kind of an irrelevant point. Hydrogen and Oxygen are common elements on earth, with or without volcanic erruptions, and are present in nearly every sort of event. The heat from volcanos does help the hydrogen and oxygen to join into water molecules, but there is a critical flaw in this thesis: If the rain from the flood were the result of thousands (more likely millions) of essentially simultaneous erruptions, we would expect to see a very specific band of ash in the geologic record which would have settled after the flood waters would have subsided. There is also the problem that if there was that much volcanic ash in the atmosphere there would not be enough sunlight in the air to make a rainbow.

No one would debate that floods, even massive floods can and do happen. Or that there may have very well been such a flood during the time of Noah. But there is NO evidence that there has ever been one giant global flood which wiped out everything and everyone with the exception of one family.

The science just doesn't support it in any way, shape or form. Of course, this doesn't mean that God didn't change the laws so that everything worked out exactly as portrayed in the bible. If you accept the story of Noah on faith, there's always a way for god to have made it happen. If you accept the story of Noah based on the "science"... you need to go back to junior high science class. If you accept that the story of Noah was just another myth like hundreds of other cultures, then it doesn't matter if the science backs it up or not.

How did the animals enter Noah's ark?

The account in the book of Genesis (roughly chapters 6-8) do not mention anything about how the animals entered the ark. It does say that there was a single door to the ark (Genesis 6:16), but how big that door was is not specified. Tradition says the animals entered "two by two." Tradition also forgets to note that Noah was told to bring in 7 of each type of clean animal, not just the standard "one pair of each."

How long did it take for the Ark to float?

Noah's ark drifted for five months, according to Genesis 7:24 and 8:4. It rained for 40 days and 40 nights [7:12, 17]. It began on the 17th day of the 2nd month [7:11]. The waters covered the earth for 150 days [7:24]. The ark grounded in the mountains of Ararat, in modern day Armenia, on the 17th day of the 7th month [8:4]. Those who make mathematical computations typically assume that a period of 150 days may be divided into five months of 30 days each.

What was the resting place of noahs ark?

I watched a program a few months ago that suggested the Ark of the Covenant may be in Ethiopia.....Although, I have always heard that its final resting place is unknown to this day.

Another Answer:

A team of 14 American "business, law, and ministry leaders" purports that the possible resting place of the ark could be in Alborz Mountains. The Alborz Mountains is a mountain range in northern Iran.

What did Noah do immediately after he left the ark?

When the waters had receded for a time, Noah released a raven and a dove who could find no place yet to land. After a while, he then released a dove who returned with an olive leaf, indicating some vegetation showing. After a further week's wait, the dove did not return. Noah removed the ark's covering, and left the ark with his family when God instructed him to. He released the animals, built an altar, and offered burnt offerings to God.

Did Noah have a daughter?

There is no mention of any daughters other than in-laws through the marriages of his sons, but it is not uncommon for ancient genealogies to completely neglect mentioning daughters, as the genealogy is recorded through sons. Sometimes, not even all the sons are mentioned but only the ones who were considered significant for one reason or another. In short, he may have had daughters, ad probably did, but the text only mentions his three sons. These daughters would have to have been born after the flood though, as only 8 people survived the flood and that was Noah, his wife, his 3 sons and their wives.

What was the name of Noah's wife and daughters-in-law?

In the Bible, Noah was the son of Lamech.

Apocryphal literature which is not accepted in the biblical canon has the story that Lamech raised him but noah was not his biological son. Noah was the son of the "Gods". The story told is that Lamech came home one day and saw a child that didnt belong. He asked his wife who the child was and the wife told him the child was Lamech's. Lamech was outraged. His wife pleaded saying it was his son and not one of the sons of "Gods" that the child was a son of man. Lamech went to his father to ask for help. His father than asked Enoch what his son should do about this mysterious child. Enoch told him he should name his Noah and keep him as his own for one day he will be choosen.

How many days did Noah stay on the ark after the rain?

Either 40 days or one year:

  • Genesis 8:4 says that the Ark came to rest on Mount Ararat (5 km above sea level) on the seventeenth day of the seventh month. Verse 8:5 says that in the tenth month the tops of the mountains were seen. Finally, on the fist month of the new year (8:13a) the waters were dried up on the land.
  • Genesis 8:6 says that at the end of forty days, Noah opened the window of the Ark and (8:8-12) sent forth a dove to tell that the land was dry.

The difference arises from the differences in two different accounts of the same story, that have been intertwined to the point that can seem to be jusdt the one account, but for the internal contradictions.

How many clean animals were on Noah's Ark?

OpinionThe Old Testaments wrote a list of unclean animals; Deuteronomy 14:7-19 & Leviticus 11:2-31. I Guess, any animals outside this list are clean animals. AnswerAs specified in the Torah, the clean land animals are any animal that both chews its cud and has split hooves. Examples of these animals are: cows, bison, water buffalo, deer, giraffes, sheep, and goats.

What type of wood was used to build the ark in the bible?

It's a fictional story. Therefore I'm sure we have no clue.
