This is an ongoing event. As of May 27, there has been no oil found on Florida's coastline, but they are preparing for the event.

well the exact term of offshore is that is is not on this planet. it is very hard to get, and to find. on shore is that it is on earth and pretty local to get at. onshore is mostly were we get out resources :-)

Oil affects the ocean by cause harm to mammals, fish and marine birds. Oil that is spilled into the ocean can also affect the eggs and larval survival. It will also kill off the plant life that provides for a shelter for underwater creatures.

There are about 950000 oil wells in the entire world. Of those, 530000 are located in the US!

It means an activity to pick up litter along the coastline and perhaps taking measures to prevent further pollution of the coastline and its environs.

The entire marine wildlife in the area tends to be affected by oil spills. That means above-surface, surface and below-surface life forms. For example, migratory birds such as northern gannets [Morus bassanus] may be affected by fumes and flames. They also may find their respiratory body parts partially or totally clogged and their ambulatory parts similarly debilitated or destroyed. They may not have access to surface food sources.

A drilling rig drills a hole into the earth and it is called a "well". Once the hole is drilled down to the formation which contains the oil, a casing is installed. The casing is basically a tight fitting set of pipes that go all the way from the surface of the well and right down to the bottom. The casing and formation is fractured (basically holes are shot through the casing and into the formation) which allows the oil to flow into the well. Depending on the conditions, a type of pump will be selected and installed down to where the oil is flowing into the well and is pumped to the surface via the tubing that is connected to the pump.

It will be stopped. The current plan calls for the completion of relief wells in August. The relief wells are the conventional means of killing a blown out well. The blow out occurred on April 20, and it took 13 days to get all the required equipment and approvals to drill the first relief well. It takes 3 months to drill a well to the required depth of 13,000 ft below the sea floor. Heavy drill mud will continously be pump until the well stops flowing. It may take several days before the well finally dies. The well will be filled with cement. I expect the blowout preventer will be removed using the ROV's for inspection.

I can't say everything will go as plan, and if there are unforeseen circumstances, the completion of drilling could go beyond August. I consider this an unlikely event, particularly since progress on drilling has been good.

The top kill was done to try to save some time. It was an unproved method at 5,000 ft of water.

I have included some lists of where oil spills have occurred. Some very large oil spills occurred during wars (Kuwait-Iraq War, Iran-Iraq War, World War II), and these were intentional, so they do not show up on lists of accidental oil spills.

Also, there are many different causes for oil spills. There are accidents associated with tankers, barges, pipelines, refineries, production platforms and drilling rigs occurring in many different countries.

The list of oil spills differ. The list from 2009 does not include the BP oil spill. Some lists do not include smaller oil spills. The list from the tanker association includes spills from the transportation of oil, not the exploration, production and refining of crude oil. But all lists show that oil spills have occurred in Asia, Africa, Europe, North America and South America. The US has a long history of oil spills as the US is one of the oldest countries producing and transporting crude oil.

The media is using a variety of names.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill seems to be the most common name. The name of the rig that caught fire and sank was the Deepwater Horizon. The BP oil spill is also common , but BP has other spills, so BP oil spill 2010 is better. The oil spill from the Macondo well is also clear. The Gulf of Mexico oil spill is common, but since there have been others, Gulf of Mexico oil spill 2010 is better.
