How many animals died because of the 2010 BP gulf oil spill?

Billions of sea organisms have died.

Millions have fish have died, or not been born due to interference from the oil spill.

Tens of thousands of larger animals have been killed due to the oil spill.

These are some of the numbers collected from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) on the birds collected. (Sept 17th report)

From Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and On-Water

Birds: 8030 total collected.

4311 visibly oiled. 3705 no visible oil, 14 pending.

2071 dead, 5959 alive.

Dead and oiled: 2240, (14 pending).

Alive and oiled: 2071.

Sea Turtles: 1114 collected

470 visibly oiled, 196 no visible oil, 448 pending

528 alive, 586 dead

dead and oiled: 17, (448) pending

Alive and oiled: 453

Mammals: 101 collected

6 visibly oiled, 91 no visible oil, 4 pending

9 alive, 92 dead

dead and oiled: 4 (4 pending)

alive and oiled: 2

Reptiles:

Notes:

  • Many animals have died and sunk to the bottom of the ocean or have been eaten by predators/scavengers after death.
  • Many birds/animals die of natural causes.
  • Some oiled animals may later die from complications after they are released
  • Some animals with no visible oil may have ingested oil.

Estimates from the beginning of 2010 were near five thousand. However, more are dying daily.

In terms of land animals, at least 3000 have died, tens of thousands of others have been affected. Millions of sea organisms have been affected, but there is no accurate count.

It is hard to tell how many of the animals have died directly as a result of the oil spill, how many indirectly died, and how many died due to natural causes.
LOTS.

What is life like on a deep sea oil rig?

It is different. A offshore rig worker works on a rotational schedule. Generally, work is a straight 14 day hitch. In many foreign countries, a common hitch is 28 days. This would be called a 28/28, as you get 28 days of work and 28 days off work. The company pays for your transportation from your home base to the rig site.

There are no holidays. Hours are long. Accomodations are cramped.

For every job on a rig, there has to be two people, typically a day shift person and a night shift person. Bringing alcohol aboard a rig is prohibited. There may be special smoking rooms. All rigs have workout rooms.

Life means missing special occasions with friends and family. The internet and the many forms of communication helps greatly in this manner.

Work hours may exceed 12 hours, but you don't have to worry about meals, laundry or a commuting to work, so it doesn't seem that hard.

I've included a link on offshore life.

What are the top ten worst oil spills?

This is a pretty contentious question. You may find printed in the media that the BP spill is the worse, but then there are qualifiers or the conditions that bring it to the top of the list. How do you define "worse"- largest, most environmental damage, most costly.

The BP spill is ongoing, but when it ends, it may be the most costly spill in the world. I don't think it will be the largest, but this is speculative because the rate estimates are still be identified.

In the end, the Atlantic Express (1979) may rank as the world's largest recent spill. Ixtoc-1 well blowout is presently the largest blow out in the Gulf Coast but the BP spill far surpasses it in cost.

What are the effects of an oil spill?

Oil spills effect the economy because:

It costs money to clean the oil up, and the oil is usually not recoverable.

Oil spills cause considerable damage to many jobs in many industries including:

  • Fisheries and related aquatic industries
  • Tourism
  • Shipbuilding

Oil spills affect the local economy because the gasoline prices go up. Therefore those families that cannot afford the high gas prices cannot transport themselves in their own car.

What happens when you spill a chemicle on yourself?

It depends on the potency of the bleach. Exposure of common household bleach to your skin is not likely to have immediate effects, especially if the bleach has been diluted with water. he longer the bleach is left on your skin, however, the more likely it is that you will begin to experience burning, itching and other types of irritation. If the bleach is left on your skin for an inordinately long period of time, it can cause pigment lightening and permanent tissue damage. Stronger industrial formulas of bleach will produce the same results, only in a shorter amount of time.

Getting bleach in your eyes is much more serious than getting it on your skin; damage can occur much faster, and the worst-case scenario can be more debilitating. Pain and irritation will be immediate and proportional to the potency of the bleach. Irritation and damage to your eye tissues will continue until all of the bleach has been rinsed away, and pain and tenderness is likely to continue for hours afterward, even in cases of mild bleach exposure. If first aid is administered immediately, permanent damage may be avoided. If bleach is left to linger or if the bleach is very potent, more serious consequences can include vision damage and even loss of the eye or eyes.

The immediate application of first aid is essential to minimizing skin and eye damage. Reduce skin exposure immediately by washing the skin with water for 15 to 20 minutes. If you get bleach on clothing and it soaks through to your skin, remove the clothing first before rinsing. If no irritation develops, professional medical treatment is not necessary. If you get bleach in your eyes, hold your eyes open and flush them with clean water for 15 to 20 minutes. If you're wearing contact lenses, stop to remove them after about five minutes of rinsing, then continue. Always seek professional medical attention as quickly as possible after eye exposure. Immediate rinsing is the highest priority, but if you can get someone to summon medical attention for you while you're rinsing, do so.

How can you clean up a spill?

i will say sorry and find a new dress for the guest if only i have some.

How do you clean spilled oil off a concrete driveway?

Cat litter is great for that. After the majority of the oil soaks up into the litter you scoop that up, then put a little more on the stain that will still be there. Grind the new dry kitty litter into the oil stain with your shoe until it looks like dust, then sweep that up. You may have to do that several times to get it all the way up. After all that, (I assume the driveway is cement) you can get it a little damp and put some laundry soap on it and scrub the spot. Eventually it will get most if not all of the oil up. Have fun!

Imagine of oil supplies get exhausted have will affect your lifestyle?

This is very serious matter of exahausting of oil supply this exhausting will disturb our daily routine of kitchen or in vehicles.

The truth is that there is more effort being put into keeping the energy supply as it is than making healthy alternatives. there is a great deal of power concentrated in the hands of a few people as things stand. they know we will eventually run out of oil. In the meantime however they will make hay while the sun shines. there is absolutely no doubt that fossil fuels and lubricants will be replaced with far better and less polluting alternatives, As soon as we have made all the money we can out of the stuff that is in the ground. The situation today is centered around greed, and power.

Who is responsible for The Louisiana oil spill?

The British Petroleum Corporation, has overall responsibility as they are have exploration rights to the block where the well is drilled, and is the operator of the well.

Now, there is likely to be disagreement to who caused the well to blow out. The blow out preventers did not operate as they should. So, the owners of the rig, Transocean Corp, and the makers of the blow out preventers, Cameron, may be connected to the cause of the spill. Finally, the blowout occurred shortly after cementing in production tubing, done by Halliburton, so their actions may also be related to the accident.

Positive things about the oil spill?

It tells people that off shore oil drilling can be dangerous and extremely difficult to repair. It tells people to develop other alternative sources of energy that are much more safer, such as wind and solar.

What will happen if the oil spill doesn't get fixed?

The conventional method of relief wells will succeed. If highly unusual circumstances arise, and the two relief wells must be abandoned, BP will keep drilling more wells until the oil well is capped. Sometimes there is stuck drill pipe in the well, and then the well may be sidetracked to continue drilling. Some wells after flowing for long periods of time, "bridge over" meaning that rocks and sand entering the wellbore eventually form a plug.

How much oil was spilled?

Somewhere between 90-180 million gallons of oil has been spilled into the Gulf of Mexico from the 2010 BP oil spill.

On June 19th, the official estimate is 35,000 to 60,000 barrels a day, though internal BP documents concede it could be as high as 100,000 barrels a day. (Between 1,500,000 to 2,500,000 gallons, as high as 3,000,000 gallons a day. 6 - 10 million liters, as high as 12 million liters a day).

The Alaska Prudhoe Bay disaster also caused by BP, spilled approximately 212,252 US gallons of crude oil onto the land, (6,000 barrels or 800,000 liters).

90-180 million gallons seems like a gratuitous amount of oil, but there are approximately 42 gallons in one barrel of oil. Globally, 85 million barrels are used per day. So at the worst... 180 million / 42 = 4,300,000 million barrelswere spilled, which doesn't even come close to what the world uses in one day. However, that's still very bad for the environment.

What are pros and cons of oil spills?

Oil spills help divert attention away from other problems, and can act as a scapegoat for things actually caused by other things. For example, economy problems and joblessness can be blamed on an oil spill.

Within particular companies, persons may be laid to task for the spill, and may be fired or demoted. This allows other people to be promoted and take these newly emptied positions. Even the people fired may benefit. In addition to severance packages, they can blame their firing on an accident that was 'not their fault', when their firing could also have been for other reasons such as work ethic or personality.

Major oil spills can also increase the price of oil, benefiting other oil companies. Workers may be hired to clean up the spill, increasing employment in the pollution clean-up sector. Boycotts of particular gas stations increase gas purchases at other stations.

Legislatively, oil spills show where regulation is weak. This eventually leads to new, better laws being passed that prevent more oil spills, or lessen the severity of the spills.

What are some long term effects of oil spills?

The effect depends on where the spill takes place. If on a body of water oil would float having a lighter specific gravity and would cause damage to plankton and other animals living in the upper water zone. The COD or chemical oxygen demand of the contaminate would kill of fish food supplies. Birds would get covered in oil and eventually die due to exposure or oil ingestion. Oil could be carried to shore effecting fish fry breeding grounds, oyster, mussel beds and shore creatures crabs and so on. Oil Aggregates could form and these balls of oil can be carried far and wide eventually sinking to the sea floor.
