How long do pet budgies live?

The average lifespan for a budgie is between 5 - 8 years. This can extend to 15 if the bird is well fed and kept in clean conditions.

Life span depends on genetics and how well a bird is cared for during its lifetime.

It honestly depends on the budgie's country of origin. Budgies in Australia, their country of origin, easily live between 10 and 15 years in captivity. In England, years of inbreeding and changing the birds' natural size and certain characteristics has resulted in shorter lifespans of just a few years.

Can you put a parakeet in the same cage as a parrot?

There is actually no species of bird called a "parakeet". Parakeet is the general term used to describe any of several small to medium sized parrots having long tails. This includes cockatiels, budgerigars and other smallish parrots.

Cockatiels can live happily with budgies although, as a rule, they do not breed as well when there are budgies in with them (there are always exceptions). Cockatiels can get along with Bourke Parrots and other birds which are not particularly territorial.

What should you put in a parakeets cage?

well off the top of my mind I would think that if you let any bird out of its cage....

1. it could leave bird poop around your house

2. has more of a chance to fly out by you just opening a door. Or your child leaving a door open if you have any.

so to me that would convince me that I what to leave in a cage. Now I might really love it buy it a big cage and maybe let it out occionally but I have a cage for it to live most of the time.

Could you put a lovebird with a parakeet in the same cage?

I absolutely would not recommend keeping finches and budgies together. You should keep birds of the same species or at least family together. Finches are much smaller than budgies, and cannot defend themselves should the budgie decide to attack. Budgies can take off a finch's foot or beak. The same goes for keeping budgies with birds bigger then them. Budgies can suffer a similar fate, with missing toes and beaks, from a bird only a little bigger than them, such as a cockatiel. It is not a good idea. I have experience both personally and professionally with birds.

I agree as well. If you want a community time aviary, you need to keep the same time of species or family together like she said . Just an example would be finches , canary , and a diamond dove. If you have questions about the species family look it up or just look at the beaks!! They all have similar beaks.

What is the scientific name of budgerigar?

AnswerA "budgie" is the same thing as a parakeet.

A budgie (short for budgerigar) is a colorful parakeet (you may be more familiar with the term 'parrot' as that is what they are commonly referred to as.) originating from Australia and commonly found in pet stores. They are trainable. A budgie is actually NOT the same thing as a parakeet. A parakeet is a medium to small sized bird with a long tail from the parrot family. They are frequently called parakeets but a Quaker parrot, lorikeet and cockatiel are a few other parakeets. Parakeet means 'long tail' so budgies aren't the only parakeets.

The term "parakeet" is a generalised term to cover these smaller, long-tailed breeds in countries outside of the birds' native lands. For example, the term "parakeet" is never used in Australia to refer to budgies, lorikeets or cockatiels. Birds classified under the name "parakeet" are actually unrelated to each other, except by means of all being in the parrot family.

So, to answer "what is a budgerigar" - a budgie is one of the smallest Australian parrots, native to grasslands, semi-arid and arid areas. They are very popular as both individual pets and as aviary birds, as they breed easily, and a multitude of colour variations have been bred into them. Originally, they were basically green birds, but a few colour mutations saw breeders selectively breeding for more colours over many, many generations.

Budgies make great pets because they are very sociable, chattering away happily to themselves for hours. With regular, careful handling, they can be tamed.

What does a parakeet do when mating?

First, your male parakeet will began coming closer to your female parakeet. Then, he will slowly put his foot on your female. When your male is on top of your female, the female's tail will go up, and the male's tail will go down. This is when their butts will touch. About 10 to 15 days later, your female will lay her first egg. She will lay one egg every other day until she has about 4 to 8 eggs. All this usually happens during early spring. And remember, DO NOT remove your breeding female, or male at any time!

What do budgies eat?

In their natural habitat in Australia, budgies feed on the seeds and leaves of native grasses. They enjoy native flowers and thistle flowers, and nibble on the bark and branches of trees to help keep their beaks short. They also enjoy the leaves, flowers and bark of eucalyptus trees.

Pet budgies should be given commercial Small Bird seed mix; fruit (not too much and only every few days or they get diarrhoea); raw vegetables such as carrot and lettuce and other leafy greens in small amounts and only every few days; honey bells and other commercial bird seed treats; sprouted seeds and millet.

Oats are good for winter because it helps them get some extra fat for when it gets cold - but be careful as you do not want your budgie to get fat. You can also try giving them small pieces of whole grain bread and even wheat cereals but make sure you don't give them too much.

All budgies should have grit mixed in their food. Grit contains oyster shells, finely ground eggshell, charcoal, calcium, mineralised lime, and cuttlebone. Possible treats include papaya/pawpaw, apples, mangoes, and bananas.

Do NOT feed your budgie avocado or sugary foods like chocolate, both of which can be poisonous to budgies.

When do parakeets sleep?

No, not a LOT. Mine tend to sleep 12 hours at night and take about 2-4 short naps of 5-10 minutes during the day.

How do you teach your parakeet to play dead?

Well based on what I know Parakeets are pretty smart but depending on how old your Parakeet is can help you on its skill level in tricks. If you have a young Parakeet or a Parakeet with little to no trick knowledge start by giving it the basics or simple voice phrases.

How do parakeets protect themselves from their enemies?

Where does a Monk Parakeet from?

The Monk parakeet (Quaker parakeet) originates from the temperate to subtropical areas of Argentina and the surrounding countries in South America. Self-sustaining wild populations descended from escaped birds occur in many places, mainly in North America and Europe.

Monk parakeets are communal dwellers, building large nests of sticks that may measure three or four feet in diameter and house dozens of birds. They prefer tall free-standing objects about 20 - 40 feet in height, being (in South Florida) especially fond of Royal palms and the light poles at ballparks.

How can i convince my parents to get a parakeet when I already have a hamster?

Funny thing is I was in the same situation as you. I currently have two hamsters and a parakeet. What i did was tell them how great pets they are and show them lots of youtube videos of parakeets talking, doing tricks, etc, so it would inspire them. My dad said it was okay for me as long as i take care of it. But my mom on the other refused and complained on how they'll be messy and too much work and money. I did lots of research in made a little packet. My mom kept saying excuses not to read it so i recited the facts to her when she was watching tv and in the kitchen. My birthday was near so i told my mom i wanted a parakeet and i'd be really psyched if i got one. I guess that worked and i ended up having one :)

How long is a Parakeet life span?

it depends what kind of parrot you are talking about and whether it live in captiviy or in the wild and if it is fed well ect. but most parrots (such as a cockatoo) can live over 100 years. Most outlive there owners!!

Which gender of parakeets is quieter?

females ar more quiet because they are less territorial towards other birds.

Can a female parakeet have babeys without mating?

No, parakeets must have a mate in order to lay fertilized eggs. If they don't have a mate, the parakeet's eggs will be hatched unfertilized, meaning that they will not carry a baby.

Is parakeet a mammal?

No a parakeet is definitely NOT a mammal. They belong in the bird species. They lay eggs and have feathers. Parakeets are birds and remember that.

What is the difference between a male and female parakeet?

This cannot be answered simply, because there is actually no specific breed of bird called a "parakeet".

The term "parakeet" is a generalised term to cover numerous species of smaller, long-tailed parrots, specifically budgies, lorikeets or cockatiels.

If you are really talking about budgies, which is the bird most commonly referred to in the States as a "parakeet", then a mature male tends to have a deep blue cere, which is the waxy bit above the beak where the bird's nostrils are. Males only develop this blue as they mature towards repreoductive age. Females have a white cere but, when they are in breeding season, it deepens in colour to brown.

Should the parakeet's cere be swollen?

If it is to swollen it might have an infection otherwise it should be fine
