Is the movie 'Paranormal Activity' based on a true story?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, "Paranormal Activity" is not based on a true story.

However, director Oren Peli told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that moving to a home in San Diego inspired the film.

"I never lived in a single detached family home," he said, so he was conscious of every noise at night, particularly of the house settling and items slipping from shelves. That led to thinking how a video camera might document the source of the sounds, which led to the movie.

He credits "This Is Spinal Tap" and "The Blair Witch Project" as influencing a movie that purports to be true, but isn't.

Additional input from WikiAnswers contributors:

  • According to writer/director Oren Peli, he got the idea for the movie after he and his girlfriend bought their first house together. They bought a new suburban tract house, which was still settling. At night, the house could be heard creaking and settling, causing little noises and things to fall off shelves and break. Peli doesn't say whether or not he thought his house was haunted, but that incident is what gave him the idea to write "Paranormal Activity."
  • First off, the movie isn't what it seems at all. The first 10 minutes are terrible - to say the least. And then it picks up and it was excellent. Definitely check it out!
  • No, "Paranormal Activity" isn't a true story. It's a made-up story like all ghost movies they make except they wanted to make it seem more real, like a documentary. I mean you can't just find a camera and all that stuff on site and say lets turn it into a real movie.
  • No. There are 2 endings; it were true and they DID die, how could they make an alternate ending? What, did they come back alive, make another ending, then die AGAIN? Impossible.

In addition, do you really believe that an invisible so-called "demon" could really drag an adult like Katie (if that even is her real name)? I bet they put strings on her ankles or attached her to a bunch cables. Plus, it says "Thanks to this police station for this video." I have seen way too many movies that say that.

My point is, it is NOT true. Do not believe one second of it; this will just waste your time staying up at night afraid the "demon" is going to haunt YOU.

  • "Paranormal Entity" was in fact based on a fictitious story. In 1978, a book was published by a man named Frank Defelitta... It was then made into a movie in 1983 named "The Entity." And "Paranormal Entity" is in fact based on this book.

I did not find this out until after doing some research of my own because of suspicion... I have watched scenes and trailers of the movie and it is almost identical to that of the 2009 movie "Paranormal Entity." Note the bathroom scenes and the "rape" by an unknown force.

Another oddity: The name "Maron" in "Paranormal Entity" was the woman in the movie "The Entity's" last name.

  • No, of course it is not based on a true story: The CIA or the FBI don't share with their documents with some director. And also, if this event were true, we would have seen that in news all over the world....
  • Actually - and as you can see - it is true. Think of it: When a person dies where does his or her spirit go? Well, here above the ground, and demons are true and they are very powerful.

Asked by Wiki User

Well, no one really knows I've seen many on tv. To answer your question I would probably say yes, someone in this world has caught something like that on tape.

I did. We had to move houses though because we hired someone to come in, I forget what you call them but she came in with a video thing, taped something. Minutes later she show the tape of paranormal activity she said. She also said we should move houses because she couldn't remove the spirt that was inside it. We got to keep the tape, but my mom threw it out because it scared her.

Is Paranormal Activity appropriate for an 11 year old?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I would have to say HELL NO. An 11 year old should NOT see this movie unless you are okay with them sleeping in your bed or with all the lights on in the house. My friend is 17 years old and had to sleep in his living room with every light in the house and t.v on. I myself almost left in the middle of the movie.

Do paranormal activities have a scientific base?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Paranormal phenomena can be classified as many things from psychic abilities, to experiences of ghosts, to UFOs to BigFoot and related cryptozoological phenomena.

Research parapscyhology is the scientific study of extrasensory perception (ESP) and psychokinesis (PK). These areas do offer some evidence of some paranormal phenomena.

ESP seems to involve influencing people's minds. Telepathy, clarivoyance (remote viewing) and mediumship have all been studied in controlled and replicated laboratory experiments successfully. Results have been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Parapsycholgy.

Likewise PK has also be reliably studied and results similarly published. PK seems to invovle influencing the environment with the mind. On the level of common experience, this is known as macro PK. A well-known phenomenon associated with macro PK is the poltergeist phenomenon. PK on the molecular level is known as micro PK. This has been studied in the laboratory with perturbations of delicately balanced mechanical systems as well as influence on random-number and random-event generators.

What is known now is that there is significant evidence that ESP and PK are quite real. But there are reasonable limits. For example, while it has been established that 'anomalous information' can be known at least in gifted subjects, it is unknown how they receive that information or what the true source of the information is. In other words, mediumistic and psychic abilities are proven, but science has no idea if these abilties indicate the existence of discarnates or prove survival of bodily death. There is simply no way to know.

It has been likewise demonstrated that PK is real. But science has no explanation for how these phenomena in fact manifest. Indeed, these reliable findings strongly suggest that classical physical laws are in need of revision. Many theoretical phsycists concur and a general trend in leading-edge physics is to question the completeness and correctness of modern classical physical laws.

Is the footage in Paranormal Activity real?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes and no (but mostly no). Sometime they are based on real events or they are about real issues: there are films called "documentaries" which have no actors, and use real people, for example. But even with a documentary, it is the product of the director's vision, and it tells the story he or she believes needs to be told. As for fiction, and most movies are entirely fictional, they begin with a good script, one that tells a story (it may be a comedy, a tragedy, an action-adventure, a romance, etc.); once the actors and actresses are hired, movie-making is about bringing that story from the printed page to the screen (or to home video).

Making a movie involves shooting scenes repeatedly to get them right, lots of editing, use of special effects (today, often created by computers), and a finished product that has characters who seem real to the audience, even though they are not real at all. Like an interesting book, a movie is a work of fiction and it is meant to seem as realistic as possible. Some movies are so realistic that people who see them will cry when a character dies, even thought we know the character isn't real (and didn't really die). That is what is amazing about a movie-- it brings you into a world where you otherwise would never go, and makes you feel as if you are a witness to the lives of other people.

Why do you read literature?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Literature represents a language, people, culture and tradition. Literature introduces us to a new word of experience. We learn about books and literature. We enjoy the comedies, tragedies, stories, poems, and plays and we may even grow and evolve through our literary journey with books. Ultimately we may discover the meaning of literature by looking at what the author says and how he/she says it. We may interpret the author's message. In academic circles, the decoding of the text often carried out through the use of literary theory using a mythological, sociological, psychological or other approaches whatever, critical paradigm we use to discuss and analysis literature. There are still artistic qualities to the works. Literature is important to us because it speaks to us, it affects us and it is universal. Even when it is ugly, literature is beautiful.

What do you call people who study the paranormal?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The study of paranormal activity is actually called several things.

People who are interested in hauntings, apparitions and poltergeists usually in specific locations, are called variously "ghost hunters" or "ghost investigators". Many of these work in groups or teams generally of a more casual nature.

People who are more focused on producing information from their work may be called "paranormal investigators" or "paranormal researchers". These labels are arbitrary; it is possible "ghost hunters" may call themselves "paranormal investigators" for example. This is as confusing as it sounds.

Those who are academicians and are interested in studying fields related to speicifc anomalous phenomena (such as extrasensory perception, environmental effects on perception tasks, psychokinesis and mental interactions on living systems) are termed "parapsychologists." Parapsychologists usually have advanced degrees. Many are members (at least in the United States) of the Parapsychological Association, the association so accredited by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Is Paranormal Activity film fiction or non-fiction?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Paranormal Activity is NOT real footage, and it is NOT based on a true story, either. It is 100% fictional (make-believe). See the Related Question for more details, including links to the movie's official website, where the writer/director explains how he came up with the idea.

There are a lot of people out there who seem to be totally convinced that it's real footage (or, at least, based on a true story), and I'm guessing they have confused you. I promise you, they are misinformed. It's not real; it's not partly real, or based on something real, or even inspired by something real. It's a totally fictional story and all of the footage is fake. The director and actors have said so themselves, as they are NOT dead or missing and have in fact done many interviews since the movie was released.

And in fact, passing off a fictional movie as the truth is nothing new. The Blair Witch Project did the exact same thing 10 years ago. The movie The Blair Witch Project was advertised as real, undoctored footage. Supposedly these three kids had gone missing while camping in the woods, doing a film project on the Blair Witch. No trace of them was ever found...except for the footage they shot. The footage shows them being stalked and terrorized by an unseen evil spirit (the Blair Witch).

All of it is completely fake. There's no Blair Witch, and all three kids are alive and well. They were never missing; again, the entire thing was fake.

You should always be suspicious when a movie claims to be the truth, or based on the truth, because at best this is usually an exaggeration, and at worst it's an outright lie. Many films claim to be based on true stories when they're not: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Strangers, Fargo, Spinal Tap, Rose Red. All of these movies were advertised as being "based on a true story," when in fact they are not. They are fiction.

Even movies that really ARE based on a true story are still mostly fictional. For example, The Amityville Horror and The Haunting in Connecticut. These films were supposedly based on the experiences that two families had living in haunted houses. These two families (the Lutz's from Amityville, and the Snedekers from Connecticut) really do exist, and they really did live in these supposedly haunted houses. But are the houses REALLY haunted?

Both The Amityville Horror and The Haunting in Connecticut have been called hoaxes. The Amityville Horror has been pretty much proven to be a hoax, or at the very least, an extreme exaggeration. And even Lorraine Warren, the paranormal investigator who helped both of these families and still believes their claims, insists that the movies are only "very, very loosely based" on the real events.

The Exorcist was supposedly based on a true story, but it too may have been a hoax (or, a case of misdiagnosed mental illness). Same thing with The Exorcism of Emily Rose. It's based on a supposedly true case of demonic possession (the "real" possessed girl was named Anneliese Michel), but the events depicted in the film are still primarily fictional.

Again, be VERY wary when a movie claims to be "based on a true story." Usually, it's either an extreme exaggeration, or an outright lie. The bottom line is, if it were REALLY a true story, then it would be labeled a "documentary." Same thing with a novel. It may claim to be based on a true story, but unless it's labeled a "memoir," you should be very suspicious.

Again, see the Related Question below.
