Me personally experiencing the movie this is what happened. With Katie being paranoid she stabbed her boyfriend Micah on accident. Then the cops arrived and they found her rocking back and forward for ABOUT 10 hours so then when they tried to help her she wouldn't put the knife down which resulted to her being shot down by the cops for self defense.

You actually don't find this out until the sequel, Paranormal Activity 2. In that movie, you find out that one of Katie and Kristy's ancestors made a deal with the demon for wealth or power. Payment to the demon for that deal was the first born male child in the family.

In Paranormal Activity 2, Kristy gives birth to Hunter, who is the first male child born to the family in several generations. This is why the demon haunts Kristy because it is after her son. Kristy's husband figures this out and realizes you can transfer the demon to someone else, but it has to be a relative. Therefore, he transfers the demon to Katie in order to save his wife and son.

I see it as a playful ending to a playful movie. A gardener who apparently is just a simple man, gets mistaken by the public and media for some kind of great thinker or guru, but then at the end he walks out onto a lake, seemingly performing a biblical-type miracle; the movie tells us that things can always turn out to be different from what they seem, and sometimes there are multiple layers of mysteries.

There is no real story. Paranormal Activity is an entirely fictional (make-believe) movie. It is not based on any one true story or stories.
