Did the french dislike the louvre pyramid?

There was a hot debate about the Louvre pyramid back when it was built. Many people opposed it on political grounds (it was a vanity project of the then president, the Socialist Mitterand), some on the grounds that is was utterly expensive, others because they though it would disfigure the site of the Louvre palace. Probably nowadays there would be an outcry if another president planned to remove it.

Paris itself was hardly bombed during thew second world war. This was due to the fact that Germany conquered it and so it was not bombed by the Germans. The English didn't bomb it either as the French were their allies. This is why many of the buildings are in such a good state and the traditional architecture still remains.

Where is the Palace of Versailles located?

King Louis XIV, who reigned longer than any other King in history, had big ideas. One of them was that the whole of the nobility ought to live with him in his palace, where he could keep an eye on them. As the Louvre was too small, he began a new palace at Versailles, ten miles out of Paris to the South-West. 2000 rooms, and a garden with a pond a mile long. Room for everybody, if a bit cramped. If you were a Duke you might get three rooms to live in and the supreme honour of holding the King's shirt when he got dressed. Everything the King did, he did in public. Often twice, to fit in all the spectators. Going to bed he did three times, because once the public ceremony was over, he was up and off again on, er, unofficial business. Dotted round the garden are smaller palaces for the King's lady-friends, and later Marie-Antoinette (Mrs. Louis XVI) added her own little house so she could play at being an ordinary housewife (it only had ten bedrooms and was build for Madame du Barry the mistress of Louis XV), and her own little village, LE HAMEAU (which she commissioned and designed herself), where she could play at being a milkmaid. The village is charming. The park and gardens were laid out by Le Nôtre, the greatest of all French gardeners, and Marie Antoinette and are full of statues, fountains, arcades, grottoes and temples. the fountains are turned on only a few times a year. Even in Louis XIV's time there was never enough water, so they turned on only the ones the King could see from wherever he happened to be standing. Entrance to the park is free except when the fountains are on. The Palace is a State Museum, so free to students; some rooms are simply open, others part of a guided tour. If you have to choose one or the other, take the park every time. Why is Paris a popular travel destination?

Paris is a beautiful city with a history of prestige and grandeur, and French people put a lot of effort in preserving the glory they once had in the past. The Eiffel Tower sure contributes to its popularity, but I think even if the Eiffel Tower never existed people would still come to see the beautiful palaces, city architecture, historical places, the gastronomy, the language, the arts, the culture and the lifestyle. There is just something very attractive in that package.

I personally lived in Europe for 3 years and visited Paris once. Some of my most memorable moments that don't include the Eiffel Tower includes a leisurely stroll in the park where a lot of art students are offering to sketch me to earn some extra money. Then we sat down for a lively performance of magic and comedy while waiting for the sun to set. Dinner was escargot with generous flows of wine and a cheese platter dessert. The walk home was adorned with city lights over beautiful bridges and statues and monuments, and a fiddler was playing beautiful classical music on the side of the road. That is certainly an experience you don't get in many other places in the world. Or even if you do experience something similar, nothing can really compare to Paris's authenticity.

To know what I mean you really have to visit Paris yourself. Not because I'm a fan of the city, but because trying to describe this feeling to you is a little bit like trying to describe how cinnamon tastes to a person who has never tasted cinnamon before. Some people will love it, others will loathe it, but it's only by experiencing it firsthand that they can know how it exactly feels.
