Can penicillin treat urinary tract infections?

Kidney infections are dangerous because damage done to the kidney is irreversible. i get them often from a bladder defect I had at birth. im 23 and need all of this info to basically keep surviving. I've never been recommended and never taken penicillin for a kidney inf, so if a doctor tells you to take that for this, get a new doctor. kidney infs start as urinary tracts infections (UTI's), if it gets to your kidneys, it's already pretty bad. that means the urine is refluxing (backing up) into your kidneys, and the infection has spread. here are some meds that can be used as treatment:

sulfa drugs

amoxicillion

cephalosporins

levofloxacin

ciprofloxacin

Does penicillin cover bronchitis?

Maybe. Bronchitis can be either due to a virus infection or a bacterial infection. Tests will need to be done to determine which type of bronchitis you have. In the case of a viral infection causing bronchitis, penicillin will not work. In the case of a bacterial infection causing bronchitis, penicillin may work.

Antibiotics are generally used on bacterial infections, not viral.

What does penicillin prevent?

Penicillin antibiotics were among the first medications to be effective against many bacterial infections caused by staphylococci and streptococci.

Can you give penicillin to lamb?

This is really an area that your veterinarian should answer. Yes, pen is given to lambs, but more specifically, you need to know what you are administering it for. Antibiotics will help for bactterial infections, but not viral.

What does penicillin do in the body?

Penicillin is an antibiotic that destroys Bacteria by destroying the cell wall of the microorganism. It does this by inactivating an enzyme necessary for the cross linking of bacterial cell walls. The enzyme is known as transpeptidase. It accepts the penicillin as a substrate, it then alkanolates nucleophilic oxygen of the enzyme, rendering it inactive. Cell wall construction stops and the bacteria soon die. The antibiotic nature of the penicillin is due to the strained b-lactam ring, on opening the ring strain is relieved this makes penicillin more reactive than ordinary amides

Penicillin operates by dissolving the cell wall of bacteria, dispersing its cytoplasm and other cell systems. One essential component of the bacterial cell wall is transpeptidase, which accepts molecules of penicillin as a substrate attachment. The penicillin activates, preventing peptidoglycan reactions that strengthen links in the cell wall. This leads inevitably to cytolysis and cell death.

Semisynthetic are more effective than natural penicillin?

Yes, because the semi-synthetic penicillin contains additional feature in its side chain which some how protects the beta-lactam moiety from beta-lactamenase, an enzyme which works against the beta-lactam moiety of natural penicillin.

How does penicillin work?

Penicillin works by inactivating an enzyme necessary for the cross linking bacterial cell walls.
Its given to people who use it and get cured

Does Neomycin or Polymyxin B have penicillin in it?

Polymyxin B does not have penicillin in it, I just called my local pharmacy to ask that question and the answer is no.

I should note, however, that the reason I called my pharmacist was because I used a topical ointment that contained Polymyxin B and had a very severe allergic reaction immediately after applying the ointment. I have anaphylaxis to penicillin and thought it may contain penicillin, but the pharmacist tells me it does not. He did advise me to go see my allergist again as I may have developed an allergy to another antibiotic but assured me there is no penicillin in Polymyxin B.

Can't help with Neomycin, sorry!

Why is penicillin called the wonder drug?

Penicillin saved thousands of lives during the wars . It also saved the lacerated eye of the miner which was to be removed if not treated with penicillin. All major causes of death in hospitals such as the pneumonia, scarlet fever, blood poisoning, diphtheria, tonsillitis, rheumatic fever and many other harmful diseases were all successfully treated with penicillin. The discovery of penicillin brought about one of the biggest searches in medical history. Penicillin was so powerful that even after being diluted thousand times it was still effective in killing bacteria. It can save peoples lives without harming them. Yet, without the discovery of penicillin, all the antibiotics would possibly never have been discovered. That's the reason why penicillin was called a "wonder drug".

What happens if you kiss someone that's using penicillin?

This is a question for your doctor, but don't see how it could affect you.

What is Periderm?

Periderm, also known as bark is the outermost layer of stems and roots of woody plants.

If you are allerigic to penicillin why can you take amoxicillin?

That is a very good question again asked by the expert on this subject. In the first place you do not know the exact mechanism by which penicillin allergy occurs. It may be due to traces of bacterial proteins remaining in the preparation or may be mediated through hapten mechanism or either of them or very rarely both of them may be responsible for the allergic reaction of penicillin. When you prepare the amoxicillin from penicillin, the protein/proteins responsible for allergic reaction may be destroyed and you do not get the allergic reactions of amoxicillin so commonly. Nevertheless severe anaphylactic reacions with injectable ampicillin has been obsevered by the cotntributor, although very rarely as compared to penicillin. And injectable ampicillin should be better avoided in patients allergic to penicillin.

How many 100mg tablets of penicillin do I give to a 80lb dog?

I have always been told that its 5-10 mg for every pound that your dog weighs, so 80lb dog should be around 400mg on the low end, now idk if its once a day or twice a day, but that's the ratio I think

What antibiotics are in the same family as penicillin?

Typically most antibiotics ending in -acillin are penicillin-like antiobiotics. Flucloxacillin is apparently only available in the UK or in veterinary medicine. If someone had a serious allergy to penicillin I would definitely not dispense penicillin-like antibiotics.

-Pharmacist

Why did Alexander Fleming want to do medicine?

Profession wise, he was primarily interested in bacteria and germs. Hobby wise, he enjoyed germ painting or bacteria painting.

Why doesn't penicillin kill fungal disease?

Penicillin kills susceptible bacteria by interfering with the bacterial cell wall. Since fungi don't have a cell wall, penicillin can't eliminate fungal infection.

Is there penicillin in tramadol?

None. I would refer you to wikipedia for a very informed answer to your question and as evidence that there is NO penicillin in tramadol.

How much penicillin capsules should you take to treat syphilis?

ONLY when necessary or the bacteria will become immune to the medicaton.

Can penicillin kill the bacteria in the underarm?

depends on the penicillin type and the bacterial cause, but if it is a susceptible organism and the type of penicillin is correct then the answer is yes. If you have been prescribed the penicillin by your doctor, then the answer is yes.

Can you take penicillin and Zoloft together?

Yes -- there is no synergistic effect between these two very different medications. However, discontinuing Zoloft quickly without a ramp down can cause sudden onset depression; changes in the use of Zoloft should be done carefully, under a medical supervision.

Did Louis pastuer invent penicillin?

No, It was discovered by Alexander Fleming but he gave up as he couldn't store it. 10 years later in 1944 Ernest Chain and Howard Florey tried it on humans & it worked, just in time for World War 2.
