How could you suddenly lose all hot water pressure without losing any cold water pressure?

Primarily this is caused by some other user of hot water. Like the cloths washer or dishwasher turning on. They drain the hot water available and so your shower goes cold.

Flexible PVC pipe

Hot water boilers contain a reduced orifice insert (presumably to maintain pressure in the boiler. These can become clogged with deposits that build up over the years. Any recent repairs of your water supply, can aggravate the situation providing contaminated water to add to the deposits. You probably need to clean or replace this orifice.

answerIf the previous answers have not helped solve the problem, try this: What is the source of energy that lifts and drives the hot water from the tank to your fixtures? It's the cold water, under pressure, pushing INTO the tank, that pushes the hot water OUT. If EVERY cold water outlet runs at full pressure, then start at the cold water feed at the heater. The union at the top of the heater will tell you if the water is getting there. The pressure pushing out of the water heater drain at the bottom will show you if the dip tube is o.k. (IF the drain itself is not plugged). The union on the hot line at the top will tell you the energy from the cold water push in is doing the job pushing the hot water out and if the problem is further downstream, and so on......by the way, how old is the heater? The first four digits of the serial number usually tell you. i.e. - A098745362 would be a heater built in September of 1987. Good luck.

Do you need to install a shower pan or liner when installing a tile shower on a concrete floor?

It's still a good idea so that water doesn't seep through and run into the rest of the basement.

AnswerBeing a tile contractor for 18 years I must have heard this question or better yet common misconception about concrete itself. It's important to know that concrete is not waterproof. It cannot stop water from penetrating and migrating along the surface. Yes it is true that most of the water in the stall goes down the drain some of the water is absorbed through the grout joint to the bond coat (thin set mortar) and eventually to the substrate(in this case concrete).A waterproof membrane specific to the tile trade must be used. The installation guidelines are covered by the manufacturer as well as by local building plumbing codes. As a contractor the vast majority or shower stalls I see are improperly constructed and will fail over time. The Tile Council of America publishes "THE HANDBOOK" of ceramic tile installations which will guide you through the written specs of all approved installation methods. AnswerI am planning on building a shower in the next month or two. There is a fairly new method that I am using, called "Kerdi", made by Schulter. This product is put down first, like the rubber or lead methods. I learned ot it through this site: http://www.johnbridge.com

plumbing suppliers sell a vinyl membrane that water does not penetrate and can be used for concrete covering. this membrane is used widely in Florida for those homeowners who wish to have the terrazo stone tile showers. it is a very commonly practiced method in Florida to build shower stalls without showerpans.

Is it possible for a plumber to make 200K a year?

Yes, and even more. I, a plumber in a small east coast state was responsibe for over $300k of work in a single year. That number reflects me working by my self in the field. Plumbing today is not only having the ability to do the work, but also the ability to sell. On the average, a plumber can command from $160 to $300 an hour. Anyone who is saying that they know one for much less, has a plumber who is limited in options when it comes to supporting the customer base. For example, A high pressure jetter to properly clear sewer lines, or the crew to get support out to a emerency quicky. Dont forget the good pay for a good plumber. A plumber that not only knows the trade enough to be trusted, but also let the homeowner feel ok with the decisions being made. Last but not least, WATER IS A FOOD! Children drink it, infants mothers may use the water out of tap to make formula, and so forth. The plumbing trade is watche over , at least in my regon, by the depo of heath and the FDA. One stupid mistake may not just polute the water in the house, but possibly the whole block. Also keep in mind that ,in my state, you must attend school for four years, while working. Two years after that, the plumbing board reviews your work history, the if OK'd , You may take your masters test. So $150 - $300 an hour........ totaly worth it!

Do bricklayers get paid more than plumbers?

I'm a master plumber, and my cousin is a brick layer. I make about 90k a year and he only gets 40k a year. It depends on where you work, who you work for, and also your base wage. I'm a member of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen Local 4 Southern California. I lay brick and block, set tile, marble and granite. I am a certified welder. And I have also worked with fire brick. As of 2007 the current "on check" hourly rate for a BAC local 4 journeyman in Los Angeles is $34.07.(With benefits it's about $45/hour) This works out with holidays and other time off to between $65,000 and 70,000 per year for a 40 hour week. With fire brick you quite often work 84 hours in a week ("7 12's"). That's $4054.33 gross in one week. Plumbers usually do not have the opportunity to work that much overtime and on top of all that the current wage for a journeyman plumber is $25.53/ hour*. That's $53102.40 if there were no days off. I may be biased, but you can't argue facts.

How do you install a shower pan liner?

First you must measure the shower pan area, then you need to make sure that your liner has enough room to cover at least 8 inches above the floor base for at least 3 corners of a rectangular or square shower pan.

The liner is sold in a seven foot width or a 6 foot. You fasten the corners with copper nails by nailing them to the studs whereever they need to be supported.(stay high with the nails). The nails can be bought at any plumber supply house.

Then for the corners you must fold inward, facing the corner to the back (like a sheeve on a shirt). When folded in, you'll see what i mean.

Then for the stepping area, you must cut out the shape for the step, preferably using a box cutter. You might need help to hold the liner straight and then nailing it down to the step. Cut any excess liner out the way.

Then there is one more step. You will need shower pan liner glue, which is sometimes green and it smells like wet spray paint. You will need to cut out some small or big triangles out of the liner to put near the step corners. You will need to lay them a certain way so they can cover the edges you cut with the box cutter. Lay the glue on the corners and also on the triangles-- let them dry for 1 or 2 minutes and then lay them correctly. Make sure that you don't leave any cracks where water can seep through.

It's kind of funny but the water will never reach that high, only once in its life, and that's when you test it for leaks. You will need a plug: a 2 inch test plug should do it. The plug should be an air type, by which I mean you might need a small pump. Fill the pan with water. LOL p.s you only need like 4 buckets of water, try not to let the shower water run, because you might spray it all over, thinking you have a leak.

That's it--you're done. Let the plug sit over night or at least 6 hours to see if any water has drained or leaked downstairs.
