From which continent do polar bears come?

Polar bears, native to the Artic Circle, were once believed to have evolved from female brown bears at the height of the ice age. Recent studies, however, insist they are a genetically differentiated species. As an ice-dependent mammal, distinct from brown bears, surviving the shrinking Arctic ice along with other threats caused by people, such as loss of habitat, conflict with people and chemical spills, may push the species to the verge of extinction.

How is the arctic changing now with polar bears?

The ice is melting due to pollution and global warming therefore killing animals that polar bears eat and leaving nothing but small ice bergs.

Is a polar bear a marsupial?

No. There are three types of mammals: monotremes, marsupials, and placental mammals. Monotremes lay eggs, marsupials give live birth to very undeveloped young, which must attach to the nipple (possibly in a pouch), and placental mammals give live birth to much more developed young. A polar bear is a placental mammal.

What are some adaptations that give animals a better chance at survival?

Kangaroos are uniquely adapted for survival in Australia, a country that suffers frequent droughts.

* The mother kangaroo spends most of her adult life pregnant, but in drought times, she has the ability to indefinitely "freeze" the development of the young embryo until food sources are replenished.

* The mother can also produce two different types of milk to suit the needs of two different aged joeys. She might have a more mature joey that spends less time in the pouch, while a very young embryo has attached itself to a teat. Each joey has different milk requirements - which the mother is able to supply.

* Kangaroos are able to travel long distances at a high speed, expending very little energy. They are very energy-efficient, and this is linked directly to the physical action of bringing their hind legs up with each hop. Every hop literally refills the lungs.

* Kangaroos have large, strong tendons in their hind legs which act as "springs". The springing motion requires less energy than running does, so kangaroos are able to bound for longer distances than other mammals with the standard four legs can run. They have strong back legs and elongated hind feet for bounding.

* Kangaroos are strong swimmers. Many parts of Australia are subject to seasonal flooding rains, but the kangaroo's body shape does not prohibit it from swimming. In fact, kangaroos have been observed swimming to offshore islands off the southern coast. This is the only time the kangaroo's hind legs move independently of each other.

* Kangaroos are more active in the cooler hours of the early morning and the late afternoon. During the heat of the day they are more sedentary, lying around quietly and chewing their cud.

* The teeth of the kangaroo are continuously being worn down by the tough grasses they eat. Instead of continuously growing, once a kangaroo's front teeth are worn down completely, they fall out, and the back teeth move forwards to take the place of the worn front teeth. Kangaroos have four such pairs of chewing teeth.

* Kangaroos have the ability to hear very well: kangaroos can twitch their ears independently around to determine the direction of specific sounds, much as a cat does

* They have long, strong tails for balancing.

These adaptations are the same for most species of kangaroos, including Red Kangaroos, Grey Kangaroos, wallaroos and wallabies.

Do polar bears swim to get food?

Yes, polar bears are EXCELLENT swimmers. They can swim for Miles at a time. They travel to "better" locations to hunt for food. When there is open water between them and their destination, they swim.

Their favorite food, the Seal, however, can outswim a polar bear, or dive deep to evade them. So it would be very rare for a bear to catch a Seal in the water. They usually surprise a Seal at its breathing hole.

Why does hiding and resting during the winter month when food is scarce help the polar bear?

Just like most other mammals, polar bears hibernate. Believe it or not, it actually gets a LOT more cold in the Arctic during the winter. This hibernation keeps it from freezing itself. As it eats, grows even more fat, and sleeps for a long period of time, the polar bear is kept warmer and safer from freezing almostmore than any other animal in the world!

Why are polar bears worth preserving?

To begin with and because it's the most important reason, because like you and me they are living beings. They fight for survival in a declining environment. Polar bears are at risk every day. Due to global warming and hunters, seal populations are low. Which causes the bears to enter villages in search of food, which often ends in the bear being shot and killed. Not only is their main source of food diminishing but also their natural habitat. The polar ice caps and ice fields in the North are receding due to global warming. If you were starving and your home was disappearing would you want people to question whether you deserved ot live?

For what is polar bear skin used?

Nothing! Nothing! You leave them alone and let them live in peace! Bears are my favorite animals and I don't want them harmed in any way! You don't use Polar Bears for anything. You just let them be. I mean what if someone came and used you for something. You wouldn't be happy. Think of the thing you hate doing. Now imagine you were forced to do it. And if you hurt the bears they will attack. Bears are more afraid of you than you are of them. They attack because they think YOU will attack. Also do not bother bears with cubs. If you do they will attack! I mean they will scratch you face off! They are protecting their babies. I mean you would too. So, just leave them be.

Yes, they are also one of the strongest animals. Average weight of polar bear is 700 kg, they can weight up to 1102 kg, they can stand up to amazing 375 centimeters.

This is a list of the strongest animals on the planet. This is maybe the most accurate list. I've calculated average weight, maximum weight, average height, maximum height, average length, maximum length, speed and bite force (this includes trunk power for elephants, horn power for rhinos...)

I know that giraffe is probably a little surprise.

How did the polar bears die?

Not only would it deprive future generations of a beautiful creature, but it would leave a hole in the food chain of the regions the polar bear now inhabits. The seal population would grow without their numbers held in check by the normal cycle of hunting by polar bears. They in turn would hunt the oceans of their ranges in ever increasing numbers. This would create a strain on their food source, which could cause a collapse of their food supply, which could cause them to become extinct, or if another species already under strain from other factors is unable to compete for the limited food, they in turn could become extinct. All species, including ourselves are inter-related, as with dominos, when one falls it has effects on all the others near it. Some are easy to see, as with the seals, but some are far reaching and much harder to see or anticipate.
