How much popcorn is needed to feed 150 people?

It depends on how much popcorn your going to allow each person.

Think about the serving size needed to feed one person, perhaps 1 cup per person? Then multiply by 150 to get the total amount. Remember some people will eat more than just 1 cup some will eat less so it should balance out. I have found that when feeding a large group of people it is ALWAYS better to make too much and have leftovers than to have to tell your guests that you have run out of something.

What are the factors that influence popcorn?

Initially it soil conditions, water, sun, heat and the influence of birds and insects. Later its point of harvest within the growth cycle, separation and transport followed by packaging, storage, self life, price and merchandising product placement (which may be influenced by product positioning, advertising and local promotion). Eventually it's temperature and pressure with water content being the critical factor to it's full expression and genetics and proper preparation to it's ultimate success.

Why does popcorn pop?

The physics of popcorn popping are quite interesting. In any popcorn popper you use (stove top, microwave or hot air) it works the same way:

  • The popcorn kernel is a tough coated seed with a damp internal core of starchy material
  • As it is heated the water in the inner part would like to boil but the pressure and containment of the kernel's coat prevents it from doing so.
  • Eventually the pressure on the inside gets high enough to rupture the tough coat
  • The sudden release of pressure lets the water that was way over boiling point suddenly flash into steam (and taking up a lot more volume in the process)
  • This expanding steam froths up the starch into the white popped corn then evaporates into the air

there is water inside that makes it expand
There is a certain amount of moisture in each kernel. When the moisture get heated it bursts open and makes an explosion which turns the hard outter shell inside out and the starch turns into the puffy part of the popcorn.
When the popcorn goes into the microwave, it gets heated up. The water inside begins to boil, and pressure begins to build inside the kernel. Eventually, there is so much pressure, it tears itself inside out, through it's own shell, leaving the heated starch (outside of popcorn we can see) behind.
Popcorn pops because the water inside the kennels heats up and bgins to steam. If the shell has no cracks in it the steam will not come out and it then becoms a pressure cooker inside the shell. The pressure then becomes to much for the shell and it pops into popcorn. Usually around 135 psi.

What happens if you mess with popcorn like putting a hole in the shell or leaving it in the sun for a few days?

Well, the popcorn will be very hard; in other cases it will be stale. Very stale; matters how long you leave it out like that...

Popcorn pops because the endosperm has a high moisture content. The shell is hard and hold pressure. It is like a mini pressure cooker. When the moisture inside overcomes the shells strength to contain the pressure, the kernel explodes. Water boils at 210 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the water and oil raises above that point, the water turns to vapor. When it has turned the moisture to vapor, it is gelatinizes the starches in the endosperm causing the hardened starches to start softening up. Then when the water vapor creates enough pressure (about 135 psi) the kernel bursts violently and the water still left in the starches causes it to puff up the insides and thus you get popcorn.

Pressure goes from high to low. Just like electricity goes from positive to the more negatively charged parts (like everything drains towards the ground). If there is a hole in the kernel then all the water vapor that would normally create the pressure would just escape through the path of least resistance there were a hole the kernels moisture content would just evaporate and be released into the air. Eventually then corn kernel would dry out and then just burn.

If you left popcorn in the sun nothing would happen, with or without a hole in the kernel.

As I said, the water content within the kernel has to go above the boiling point of water (212 degrees F) to even start building up any pressure. If you left it in the sun, the kernel would start to lose moisture and over time would dry up to a really hard kernel not useful for much.
