Prometheus is an inner satellite of Saturn. It was discovered in 1980 (some time before October 25) from photos taken by the Voyager 1 probe, and was provisionally designated S/1980 S 27. In late 1985 it was officially named after Prometheus, a Titan in Greek mythology. It is also designated Saturn XVI. This small moon is extremely elongated, measuring about 119 by 87 by 61 km. It has several ridges and valleys and a number of impact craters of about 20 km diameter are visible, but it is less cratered than nearby Pandora, Epimetheus and Janus. The orbit of Prometheus appears to be chaotic, as a consequence of a mean motion resonance with Pandora. The most appreciable changes in their orbits occur approximately every 6.2 years, when the periapsis of Pandora lines up with the apoapsis of Prometheus and the moons approach to within about 1400 km. Prometheus is itsef a significant perturber of Atlas. There is also an asteroid called 1809 Prometheus.

Prometheus was a Titan, which is different from the ones we call the Greek gods. Anyway, he created the humans, which was OK. But then he taught the humans some tricks and gave them fire, which was supposed to be the privilege of the gods. This enraged Zeus who decided to punish Prometheus.

The mythological Prometheus had a son named Deucalion. Deucalion was the Greek mythology equivalent of Noah. Zeus caused a great flood while he was angry at King Lycaon. Deucalion (son of Prometheus) created a Chest (same as Ark) to save himself and his wife during the great flood.

In some Greek myths, Prometheus is credited with the creation of Man. But because his brother, Epimetheus, gave all the favorable gifts to the animals, nothing was left to give man. In Greek mythology Prometheus was a Titan. The Titans were the Gods that were in charge before the Olympians took over. Prometheus sided with the Olympians in the war of succession but after wards was considered to be something of a poor cousin. He is the one credited with the creation of man from earth -- hence the equating with Dr. Frankenstein. Also Prometheus came to a bad end (he stole fire from the Gods to give to men which offended Zeus. So he got chained to a rock with an eagle visiting him every day and eating out his liver.) So the association is also an ominous one.
