What are other risk factors for prostate cancer?

Simply growing older increases a man's risk for getting prostate cancer. All men, if they live long enough, will develop prostate problems. More than 75 percent of prostate cancer cases are diagnosed in men ages 65 or older; just 7 percent of cases occur in men younger than age 60. The average age at diagnosis is 72.

African-American men have the world's highest incidence of prostate cancer-a third higher than white Americans. By contrast, Asian immigrants to the United States have much lower rates.

Risk increases for men whose father or brothers have prostate cancer. The risk is more than 10 times higher for a man who has three relatives with the disease. Risk may also be increased to some extent for men whose female relatives have a high incidence of breast cancer.

Researchers increasingly are looking at hormonal and hereditary factors and at diet, environmental exposures, and other lifestyle changes in relation to prostate cancer. For example, in countries such as China and Japan where low-fat diets are the norm, few men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. However, the incidence of prostate cancer is considerably higher among men who move from these countries to the United States, and the higher incidence persists in their sons' generation.

Researchers also are looking at the role of vasectomy in prostate cancer. Vasectomy is a surgical procedure that prevents men from fathering children. Some studies have suggested that vasectomies increase the risk of prostate cancer, although other studies failed to find such a link.

On the other hand, drinking alcohol (beer, wine and liquor) is associated with better health and greater longevity than is abstaining from alcohol.

Can a std be confused with a prostate infection?

Nope. Doctors have some pretty fancy ways of being sure it is a STD vs. Bladder infection.

bladder infections will show a high amount of white blood cells in the urine and some times blood, well most of the time.

the likelyhood of them being confused is almost nil.. you'd have to have a really dumb technician working in the lab who tainted the sample to get thosed results.

Which vitamins combat prostate cancer?

In my opinion, Roger Mason's free eBook "The Natural Prostate Cure" is the most complete set of advice on how to prevent prostate cancer using supplements, diet and lifestyle changes.

As I think Roger Mason would agree, diet and lifestyle are far more important than supplements to maintaining or improving prostate health. Eat a healthy diet, eliminate toxins from your internal and external environment, get good sleep, exercise daily and maintain a balanced state of mind. Then you won't be disappointed to find that there is no magic bullet to overcome a health problem that took months or years to develop. No one can say that taking vitamins will prevent cancer. Including supplements into a full health regimen consisting of smarter dieting, safe lifestyle, physical activity and environmental settings is a proactive approach that may help give your body a better chance of dodging the cancer bullet. Education is also helpful -- you may want to research your family's medical history to learn how they were effected by the disease.

Can you have prostate surgery after radiation treatment?

The prostate can't be massaged after it's been removed. Some men may find the massage technique pleasant even after the gland has been removed, but even if the man does have an orgasm from stimulation of the area, he will not ejaculate like he did before removal. Pre-ejaculate (pre-cum) may or may not be produced after loss of the prostate.

How long on average can a terminal prostate cancer patient live?

Expected Life Span with Aggressive PC

I have aggressive PC, and my Dr. is telling me that with near certainty, I will be dead within 5 years. Of course, I continue to hope and pray, that I'm the statistical anomaly who has a little more time left, (I'm only 52 right now, and I've already gone through IMRT and Hormone Therapy. The radiation cause avascular necrosis in my right hip, so I had to quit the hormone therapy for a few months to get a new hip, and I rebounded from 0.2 to 7 in those 3 months. I'm back on the hormone therapy, and looking for other non-standard cures I can try as the normal cures are what is expected to allow me the 5 years. The scariest part about the 5 years (from my personal perspective, discounting leaving loved ones etc) is that most of this is expected to be in significant pain, inability to work, and requiring medical attention. Since my wife left when I got diagnosed, I'm looking forward to this on my own for the most part. (She even took my dogs...) Anyway, the answer to the question, according to my diagnois is 5 years. I do believe that everyone will respond differently to the cancer and to the treatment. Additionally, I firmly believe that mental attitude will have a significant bearing on how fast you deteriorate or recover. Best of luck to all of you on this board, suffering from this personally, or helping those who do. God bless.

What are the function of the prostate gland?

The prostate gland is a small, muscular, rounded organ about 4 cm (1.6 inches) in diameter. It encircles the proximal portion of the urethra as it leaves the urinary bladder.

The prostate gland produces prostatic fluid, a slightly acidic solution that contributes 20-30 percent of the volume of semen. It also (although uncertain in significance), prostatic secretions contain seminalpasmin, and antibiotic that may help prevent urinary tract infections in males.

These secretions are ejected into the prostatic urethra by peristaltic contractions of the muscular prostate walls

Explain how the knowledge of telomerase may lead to an effective treatment for cancer?

It is believed that extreme shortening of chromosomes due to genetic abnormalities may actually trigger cancer. Such frequent shortening of the telomeres may actually cause the telomerase enzyme to activate. This may sound like something good for the cell, but in reality, the telomerase can aid in preserving cancerous cells, giving them infinite life so that they may divide and proliferate.

What if there is an urge to urinate without urination?

Many things can cause this depending on whether you are male or female. The bottom line is that you can not continue to have urinary retention or urgency without urination and not get a doctor's examination. Some of the causes may need immediate treatment, such as bladder infection, obstruction of the urine passages, prostate enlargement problems in men (including tumors), uterine fibroid tumors in women, etc. You can not assume it is something insignificant or decide for yourself if it is an urgent situation or not. Contact your health care professional for advice.

What is the survival rate for bone cancer?

Prognosis:Metastatic breast cancer isn't the same for everyone who has it. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), your symptoms at stage 4 will depend on the degree to which the cancer has spread in your body.

Although metastatic breast cancer has no cure, it can be treated. Receiving proper treatment can increase both your quality of life and your longevity.

Metastasised:

To understand the prognosis for stage 4 breast cancer, it helps to know something about the process of metastasis. When cancer "metastasizes," it has spread beyond the part of the body where it originated. In the case of breast cancer, receiving a stage 4 diagnosis may mean the cancer has reached your bones, lungs, liver, or even your brain.

Stage 4 Breast Cancer:

If you've been told that you have metastatic breast cancer, this means that the cancer has advanced to what's known as "stage 4."
