What products are pumpkins used in?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

People use pumpkins for Halloween and cooking. The parts of the pumpkins that are used for cooking are the seeds and the skin. Seeds can be fried in oil with salt and skins are used for stuff like pie.

Cut up and bake (or boil) the pumpkin immediately on Halloween night after your trick-or-treaters have stopped coming and you turn out the porch lights (to assure freshness). Baking does not require cutting off the skin, but it helps if boiling. After the meat of the pumpkin is tender, it can be food processed and used in pumpkin bread, pumpkin soup, pumpkin butter and as one would use a winter squash (as a vegetable).

The seeds can be cleaned, placed on a baking sheet, salted and baked. They make a great snack but you need to remove the shell to eat it.

What month in the year is best to start to grow pumpkins?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Mid-June through July 4 is the time to plant pumpkin seeds if you want to have some ready to harvest by the end of October. To produce jumbo pumpkins for show or fall fairs, plant seeds 120 days before the show date (early to mid-June). Allow plenty of space for the vines to run. Prune off the first few female flowers, then let only a few set to baseball size. Choose the best one, and remove all others. Turn the pumpkin several times to obtain a well-shaped fruit. Pumpkins normally mature in 70-99 days, producing several fruit per vine.

Can you start pumpkins inside?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes you can grow a pumpkin from the seeds of a purchased pumpkin as long as the seeds are ripe, dry, clean and have not been cooked.

Since commercial pumpkins are hybrids, the seed may not produce the same pumpkin variety as the original fruit you start with. They will, if successful, produce a lot of pumpkins. One seed becomes one pumpkin vine, and one vine can grow several pumpkins. If one pumpkin is left on the vine after harvest season, its seeds are likely to produce a great many vines, and pumpkins, the next season. If this is not wanted, care should be taken to ensure that all pumpkins are removed from the vine, including the little ones that may seem to be useless.
