What is the tire size of a Formula 1 car?

It is hard to speculate on the production cost of a tyre, because teams do not pay for the single tyre, a complete set or all used tyres on a weekend anymore. Nowadays all teams pay a flat fee between 2.5 and 4.5 million Euro per season to their tyre supplier Pirelli.

That sounds a lot initially, but you have to take into account the total numbers and what else comes with it. For each of the 20 race weekends in the 2012 Formula 1 season, Pirelli provides each team with 144 tyres. That amounts to 36 sets or 18 sets per driver for each race. Any tyres, no matter if used or not, are returned to Pirelli who destroys and recycles them.

If you were to calculate a price out of that, you'd get to a range of ~875-1600 Euro per tyre, but it's not the whole truth.

The tyre supplier does more than supply the black gold. The flat fee comes with technical support and a free tyre engineer and who knows what else. Also, teams do not necessarily pay the (full) sum but pay in other ways, like with sponsor displays on their cars.

What is a good car to make into a rally car?

Well, as a Chevy guy, I will have to remain objective on this one. I do not think that the Ford, Ferrari wars of the 60's have ever really even been matched. I seriously recomend if your deeply interested, further exploring the story I am about to highlight you on. It is well documented. And, one of the mechanical participants just sold at auction for just under 8 million,I think! Enzo Ferrari had a little car company in a little country called Italy. He wasn't a car manufacturer who was racing to gain marketshare, or set trends. He was a racer who needed funding, and sold cars to make it happen. Henry Ford Jr. (I think), took offense to the fact that this guy was winning all the races. In steps Carrol Shelby, and, the games began. Even being a Chevy guy, it brings a lump to my throat to think about it. Anyway, this was a time before power steering, and when cheating was classified as "enthusiasm" and not villianous. Racing was raw, and rough. By the time it was all over, Ferrari was owned by Ford, which is still true today. To finally answer your question, without hesitation, doubt, or resentment, I have to say the competition Cobra's, hands down. They attract an internationsl market, and numbers to match. There have been faster Chevies, and Dodges, but not at the right time, or, with quite the attitude, as those Cobra's. Hats off to Carrol.....Chuck.

Chuck, even though I agree with everything you say, the Ferraris, Fords and the sort were GT cars, not rally cars, Rally cars were: The Fiat Abarth (600 bored to 998cc), Austin Mini Cooper (1.275cc), Ford Escort Cosworth, Lancia Stratos, Audi Quattro, Toyota Supra, Subaru Impreza WRX 2.000cc, and the Mitsubish EVO 2.000cc (to mention a few). The fact that technology progresses with time, has made the Subarus' and Mitsubishis the fastest rally cars, but the Cooper was an amazing little rally car, winning the Montecarlo Rally several times. I would say that "In history" the little mini deserves the title, but the Audi Quattro was wy faster than that, and today a Subaru Impreza (stock, just out of the dealer) runs rings of the competition Audi car of the 80`s. Great question though.. IvoJara (BTW to convert cc`s to cubic inches divide by 16)

Who is Ron Channon Rally Driver?

Unsure who asked this question? However, here is the answer.

Ron Channon started rallying at club level having joined Tavern Motor Club in Bristol.UK in 1963, He was a founder member in it's start up year.

His first Rally was an all night event in a Hillman Minx, with his brother Ken on the maps. They checked in early at TC2, believing it was TC1, then completed the entire route via every subsequent TC, they got lost so many times and were running so late on the road all the marshalls had gone home!. The pair arrived at the finish at The Black & White cafe on the Stroud road at 0800hrs, only to be told all competitors left at 0600hrs. No one had explained what OTL meant!

Ron sacked his brother, and sold the car, progressing to a Sunbeam Rapier, a car that was still active at International level in the hands of the Bristol based Rootes works driver, Tiny Lewis.

Moderate success in club events followed and in 1964 RC purchaced a new Red Cortina GT, receiving some significant sponsorship in the form of a major tweek in the engine and suspension department from a UK based company West Manning Motors. Things were getting serious! The car enjoyed varied levels of success in National and International rallies and was eventually sold in 1969 to assist in the funding of an entry in The 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally. A free Mk 2 Cortina car was provided by The Bristol main Ford dealers, with sponsorship from Bristol City Football Club. With partner Rod Cooper they finished the 16000 mile rally which took in 27 different countries across Europe and South America, arriving in Mexico 14th overall and best private entry. Throughout the 70s and 80s Ron Channon competed as a co-driver in many International Rallies along side Bristol driver Nigel Rocky, in several variations of the Ford escort. Then came the quiet years of building his company, Golfplan Insurance into the UKs largested specialist golf insurer.

In September 2011 Ron Channon was contacted by Callum Barney (also an ex trial biker and rally driver) and told his original 1964 Cortina GT (345 EHR) had been found in a barn where it had remained untouched for 40 years!. Callum had bought the car for £10k and prepared it for the 2012 Historic Rally Championship, he invited Ron to Co-drive in The Colin McCrae Forest stages in October 2011 when they finished the event, winning there class. The first rally of the 2012 season takes place in Mid Wales on March 4th... Watch this space!!

Note: For action pictures of the car, just Google Callum Barney/Ron Channon.

Press quote of the year: When asked by a press reporter what was it like returning to rallying, Ron replied 'Expensive, I paid £645 fot the car new, and just paid £725 for my crash helmet to do this event!

What does race class mean?

The different classes represent different horsepower and skill levels. I don't know the off road truck class breakdowns, but for motorcycles the classes are broken down into 125, 250 and open class, then each one of those classes has a amateur, intermediate and pro (expert) class.

Why do they use 4WD hatchbacks for rallying?

The same reason they use 2-doors. It doesn't matter what body style the car/truck is. What matters is the running gear underneath.

If an auto manufacturer is trying to push the latest model and it is something they want to reflect what the 'Average Joe' can buy, they'll use the cheapest, most common body style they make to push-the-product, so to speak.

Back in the day of late 60's/early 70's NASCAR, there was a saying "Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday." The same can be said for Rally cars. If you're into those cars and the drivers, then you want to drive what they're driving. Granted, it's not a RACE CAR, but it's the next best thing!

Which Rally Mini Coopers won three times back to back?

The Mini Cooper S earned acclaim with Monte Carlo Rally victories in 1964, 1965 and 1967. [25] Minis were initially placed first, second and third in the 1966 rally as well, but were disqualified after a controversial decision by the French judges. The disqualification related to the use of a variable resistance headlamp dimming circuit in place of a dual-filament lamp.[26] It should be noted that the Citroën DS that was eventually awarded first place had illegal white headlamps but escaped disqualification.[27] The driver of the Citroën, Pauli Toivonen, was reluctant to accept the trophy and vowed that he would never race for Citroën again. [28] BMC probably received more publicity from the disqualification than they would have gained from a victory[29] - but had the Mini not been disqualified, it would have been the only car in history to be placed in the top three on the Monte Carlo for six consecutive years.
