Can red eared slider turtles drowned them self?

What I have to say is anecdotal and certainly not scientific! I hope it helps, but don't recommend that you rely on it!

We have a RES, known as "Mrs. Turtle" (we're not too creative with names!) who now lives in a pond in our back yard. She is now about 23 years old. We are in Central Florida, USA, and therefore in a sub-tropical environment. Mrs. Turtle stays in the pond year round, and, contrary to popular belief, it can get pretty cold around here in the winter time, even if only for a very few days at a time.

Our rule is that if the overnight temp is going to be 38F (5C) or less, Mrs. Turtle spends the night in a plastic box (a storage box, 24"x12"x12") in the garage with about 2 inches of her pond water in it. She settles down pretty quickly and sleeps with her feet out which makes her look pretty relaxed and comfortable.

The next day we will wait for a while for the sun to warm up the pond water for a while before taking her back out. We put her on one of her rocks, but within a few minutes she will slide into the water. After half an hour or so, she will climb out of the water and sit on a rock in the sun for several hours before going back into the water. She survives, but she is clearly not happy with the cold. It is also worth noting that she eats almost nothing when it is cold.

I believe tat she can tolerate cold for a short time as long as she can lie in the sun and warm up again fairly quickly. Extended periods of cold would probably give her serious or grievous problems because she would not eat. I would not like to find out!

I believe that in an artificially created environment it would be necessary to mimic the sub-tropical sun's effect and provide a suitable sunbathing area in order for a turtle like this to survive. I would not recommend extended periods of time in cold water for this type of turtle.

How old are the red eared slider turtles when you know the gender?

The gender of a turtle does not affect the age of the turtle. You can tell the age of your turtle by looking at the layers on the turtles scute. Scutes are what makes a turtles shell look quilted. Each scute sheds about once a year, revealing a new scute and leaving a layer on the new scute. By seeing how many layers are on a scute you can tell how many years old your turtle is. Example. 2 layers = 2 years, 10 layers = 10 years. A turtle with no layers will be less than a year old.

Your red eared slider turtle has been basking for a few hours now and bubbles are coming out of her nose Is that normal?

Bubbles from the nose could be a sign of a respiratory infection. Others signs of a respiratory infection would be clogged or runny nostrils, lack of appetite, swollen eyes, and open mouth gasping/wheezing. I would be suspicious of the bubbles if the turtle was not in the water.

How can you wash a red eared sliders shell?

Scrub it with a soft toothbrush. Do not use cleaning agents, especially bleach. Your turtle won't like it, but he'll have to deal!

Do all red eared sliders have red ears?

No. Some of them do, some of them don't. And salmonella is much more common with baby turtles than with adults. Just to be safe, you should always wash your hands after touching them. You should also wash your hands before touching them, because turtles can get sick from germs that humans carry.

Why won't my baby red eared slider eat?

Answer

Do you have a heat lamp for the turtle? See the Related Question below.

Answer

My baby turtle has the same problem but I'll tell you what I know... Red eared sliders can only eat in water, and they wont eat if its too cold or if your watching him/her. also try giving him/her different foods and try to see if he/she will eat that. also if it is a new turtle then wait a few day until it is used to its surrondings. and baby red eared sliders like meat alot more then anything else so try and give cooked salmon or cooked meat. I hope that your turtle eats!

Another Answer:

Red Eared Slider turtles eat MEAT when babies, make sure they are at home and comfy and not spazzing out, then slip a small piece of chicken in their tank. It will sink, but they should find it. Also, when Red Eared Sliders are babies, the water cannot go above their heads if they are on their back legs. Their heads need to poke out.

How do you decorate red eared sliders tank?

Well, I have two red-eared sliders. And I just fill their tank with a lot of small rocks since I go to the beach sometimes, and I have so many rocks in my backyard. You don't have to do that, but then the "droppings" and food that's not eaten would sink to the floor and your turtle(s) would be swimming in it. If you have rocks, sometimes those things are buried underneath. I also have like small "trees" for decorations, and a shallow rock. If your turtle(s) are big and you realize the tank is REALLY dirty when you clean it, you should get a bigger tank or clean it more often. I clean mine 3-4 days and by then, it's really dirty. Well I hope this helped! If you have any more "caring for turtles" questions, just ask me!

Why will your red eared slider not bask It has a UVB lamp and a heater and a basking area that it can reach but it will not bask?

Maybe the temperature isn't right? Try moving the lamps away 4-5 inches.

Also, turtles are very skittish and have excellent hearing. Perhaps it simply hears you coming from far away and gets scared and jumps in the water.

When do red eared sliders hibernate?

Yes, sliders are one type of turtle capable of sleeping under water. They can last for surprisingly long amounts of time but will automatically wake up to rise for air when oxygen levels become low. Even though all are capable, some turtles will non the less choose to sleep with their bodies submerged in water with only their noses or full head out. I've even seen some turtles taking naps totally out of the water. So yes, red eared slider turtles can safely sleep under water if they so choose to.

How do you Identify the Gender of a Red-Eared Sliding Turtle?

Well, my red eared slider, Jitterbug is a Female. I can tell this because I looked it up on YouTube.com and it said:

Females:1.Shorter nails

2.Shorter and stumpier tail

3.They grow bigger than males do(up to 12 inches)

Males:1.Usually smaller than females

2.long skinny tail

3.really long sharp nails
