ifconfig is he command common to all Linux distrobutions. In order to use it, you have to know in advance what your IP information should be. To set your ip address to 192.168.1.100, with a standard class C netmask you would do this:

ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.100

If you have a DHCP server installed in your network, or if your home router has a DHCP server, you should use a DHCP client to connect to the network. There are two common DHCP clients. dhclient, and dhcpcd. Their usage is mostly the same:

dhcpcd eth0

or

dhclient eth0

The methods described above will work on any distribution, but as you can see it requires you to manually type commands every time. You will have to check with your distrobution to get specific instructions, but most distributions have a 'network manager' that does that sort of thing for you.

In Ubuntu, you can just click on the network manager icon and select Wired Network or pick a wireless network. On Slackware, you can type netconfig at the command line and it will walk you through setup of a wired network. Setup of wireless networks in Slackware can be tricky if you don't have a network manager installed. The best thing to do would be to Google the name of your distribution and network or internet.

1. Open a terminal.

2. Navigate to the folder where you downloaded the RealPlayer installer.

An inode is a data structure on a traditional Unix-style file system such as UFS or ext3. An inode stores basic information about a regular file, directory, or other file system object.

Each and every file under Linux (and UNIX) has following attributes:

* File type (executable, block special etc) * Permissions (read, write etc) * Owner * Group * File Size * File access, change and modification time * File deletion time * Number of links (soft/hard) * Access Control List (ACLs)

All the above information is stored in an inode.

So, each file has an inode associated with it and an unique number called inode number.

This number is used to look up an entry in the inode table.

To create a Samba server in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, first, install the Samba package using the command yum install samba samba-client samba-common. Next, configure the Samba configuration file located at /etc/samba/smb.conf by defining the shared directories and access permissions. That depends on what codecs you install. By default, it doesn't come with many, but you can install support for proprietary codecs.

In Linux it will install an RPM package with the following arguments:

-U (upgrade)

-v (verbose logging)

This is great default way to install RPMs. If there is no existing package to upgrade, it will still install the package. If there is a newer version of the package already installed, it will tell you that and exit without error.

Classically, UNIX systems have calculated the load average by counting the number of processes that are either running on the CPU or runnable (ready & waiting for a CPU to run them). Linux does this, but it also counts the number of processes in uninterruptable sleep. Uninterruptable sleep usually means a process is blocking on I/O (waiting for disk, etc.).

As such, you can't really use a Linux host's load average to determine the CPU utilization of the host. If the load is high you might have an I/O problem instead of a CPU bottleneck. Then you need tools like vmstat, top, iostat, etc. to tell you what is actually going on.

This doesn't mean load average is useless, though. From a monitoring standpoint it's something that can tell you at a glance that something is wrong. Just remember that higher load averages aren't necessarily bad. If your 16 CPU machine has a load of 16 that might just mean it's being fully utilized.
