What happened in 1590 to England's The Lost Colony of Roanoke and to its colonists?
Roanoke is the "Lost Colony" for a reason. No one knows what happened to its people. It is a mystery that is still yet to be solved. There are only theories about what happened at Roanoke . The colonists could have died from a disease, or they tried to sail back home on their small ship, or got invaded by the Wompanog Indians or the Croaton Native Americans took them.
In 1587, Sir Walter Raleigh outfitted a ship with 91 men, 17 women, and 9 children and sent them on their way to the shores of Chesapeake Bay. Strong winds blew the expedition off course and they landed on an island off the coast of what would become North Carolina. The island was Roanoke. Roanoke was settled in 1587. The settlers attempted to establish a colony there while the ship returned to England for supplies. When it's founder returned to England for supplies, it took him 3 years to return because the journey both ways was long and dangerous, and England was at war with Spain.
When Raleigh's agents found the colony, all that was left were abandoned buildings and the word "CROATOAN" carved on one of the buildings. The men assumed the settlers had moved to Croatan Island near Cape Hatteras. But sailing there, they found no trace of the colonists. Some historians think the settlers could not survive on their own and they moved in with some local Indians, the Lumbee Tribe. The members of the Lumbee Tribe today claim that is what happened.
The colony of Roanoke is considered one of the greatest mysteries in history because no one knows for sure how or what happened to the missing colonists.
What was a significant factor in the failure of the colony at Roanoke?
It is unknown what really happened. The only part that people really know happened is that a couple people went back to England to get supplies and food for the new land. However, there was a war, so the people couldn't return to Roanoke for about 3 years. Upon their return, they saw no people left and there were bones scattered everywhere. No one really knows for sure what really happened, but one theory is that there was an Indian attack.
What was the only clue that was left behind to indicate what happened to the colonists at Roanoke?
Well, on one of the first trips back there was no sign of the 15 men they had left there, and there was only a skeleton left behind.
In terms of the "Lost Colony" there were two clues. One was the word "CROATOAN" carved into the post of a fence, and CRO carved into a nearby tree.
John White thought this may have been an indication that they moved to Croatoan Island, but was unable to visit there to check.

What were the hardships that Roanoke Jamestown and Plymouth faced?
Jamestown was built in 1607 when 104 men arrived in Virginia. They were sent by investors to find gold, but they picked the worse track of land in the area. The water was bad and brackish with mosquitoes and instead of planting crops they looked for gold. The geology of the area didn't support gold. They also landed in a Native American empire of 15,000. Within 6 months only 34 men were alive. Disease and starvation were the main causes. Historians have also found evidence of a Spanish spy in the group. In 1620 60 English Pilgrims left England for Virginia, but their ship was blown off course and they found themselves in Massachusetts. When they arrived they found an abandoned Native American village with a stockpile of food that helped them while they were living on the ship and setting up the colony. They also died from diseases and other conditions. Less so from starvation compared to Jamestown. There were 11 children with the colony and 5 died within the first months of the colony. The Native Americans did help the Pilgrims, but the Thanksgiving dinner that we celebrate didn't happen the way we think it did. It wasn't until 1863 that Lincoln declared a Thanksgiving holiday.
What were the types of governments in the thirteen colonies?
I just studied this in American History class today so you are in luck. Government of the colonies: Each colony had a Govenor. Each had a Council which was the upper house and was made up of white male land owners. They were appointed by the govenor. Which makes you think if they were only his friends and no one else. Each had an assembly which was the lower house/legislative body. They were the only elected body in the early colonies. They controlled the money and the taxes. I hope that this helps:)
Roanoke was the name the local Indians had for the area.

What was man's life like in the colony of Roanoke?
It would have been a struggle from day to day. While the colonists did bring supplies with them they would have had to provide for themselves in terms of food, fresh water, wood for cooking and heating. They did get some help from the natives but it was a time of drought and crops were not quite so plentiful as everyone would have liked. Roanoke Island is a small island with few sources of fresh water. The colonists would have had to collect rainwater. The waters surrounding the island provided fish and shellfish (oyster, crab) and the land provided opportunitites for hunting rabbit, small game , birds and deer. The mainland provided opportunities for hunting larger game, including bear, but the colonists had to cross water from the island to the mainland. The colonists also had to provide their own shelter. They built simple dwellings using local materials.
