The crucial Battle of Antietam was a dangerous mission for the Army of Northern Virginia Under the command of Robert E. Lee. His decision to stand and fight on September 17, 1862, instead of retreating on the 16th has caused Lee's critics to point out that this was a tactical error. By doing so, he exposed his army to even more losses, even close enough to cause his entire army to be destroyed. In Lee's defense, it should be remembered that the South's public morale was a necessity to keep the South optimistic that their bid for independence stood a good chance of success. Lee's decision to not retreat resonated favorably with Southern citizens, and despite the failure in Maryland, Lee's standing with the public remained high and the morale of Lee's soldiers quickly was revived.

For the most part, Confederate President Jefferson Davis was extremely active as the South's commander in chief. What was Robert Morris occupation?
Morris was a valuable member of the Continental Congress where he specialized in financial affairs and military procurement, serving in Congress's war department and as the chairman of the Secret Committee of Trade. The Continental Congress hired Morris's firm (Willing and Morris) to supply the Continental Army with arms and ammunition. Pamphleteer Thomas Paine and others would later vehemently criticize Morris for supplying the Continental Army because Morris profited greatly from the war. Although he was never tried for this apparent conflict of interest, Morris's reputation was severely weakened. In 1781 Morris was appointed the Superintendent of Finance (modern day Secretary of the Treasury), with a goal to solve the national debt crisis. ----

Robert E. Lee's invasion of Maryland required that the Army of Northern Virginia have a good base from which to manage his Maryland invasion. The town was of appropriate size and as such could be a great source for supplies, such as food, clothing and even shoes. The town had good railway connections, one of which was a line that ran straight into Pennsylvania.
In addition to these assets, the town was far enough away from the Army of the Potomac, thus preventing any surprise attacks.
Why was the Antietam battle considered a loss for general lee?
Because he retreated back to Virginia, leaving the field to the Union.
More to the point, it was a grievous loss to the Confederacy in general. The British had been treating this campaign as the test of Confederate viability, and began to lose interest in helping the South. Meanwhile it gave Lincoln the credibility to issue the Emancipation Proclamation without making it sound like a desperate measure. After this, free nations abroad could not aid the South without looking pro-slavery themselves.
How did confederate leaders hope to follow up to Lees successes in Virginia?
They hoped a strategic victory would force the U.S. government to sue for peace.
