• Rosa Parks accomplished many things in her life, and the Montgomery Bus Boycott was one of them, where she refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery Bus.

Rosa Louise McCauley was born on February 4 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama to James and Leona McCauley.Evan as a child Rosa was small, and she suffered poor health and had chronic tonsillitis. When her parents separated, she moved with her mother to Pine Level. There she grew up on a farm with her maternal grandparents, mother, and younger brother Sylvester. She was home schooled by her mother until she was eleven, and then enrolled at the Industrial School for Girls in Montgomery where she took academic and vocational courses. Rasa then went on to a laboratory school set up by the Alabama State Teachers College for Negroes for secondary education but was forced to drop out to care for her grandmother, and later for her mother, after they became ill.

Rosa Parks was unable to go to college. When she graduated high school in 1934 women and blacks were not allowed to enroll in southern colleges. It isn't until the 1960's and the civil rights movement that the first black man will be enrolled. By 1970 only about one student in 50 in the non-black colleges were black. It wasn't until 1954 that school desegregation was ordered by the Supreme Court, so Rosa Parks never had the chance to attend college and became a housekeeper.

She was taken to jail for not leaving her seat to a white man. 9 months before, Claudette Colvin was the first person arrested for resisting bus segregation in Montgomery, Alabama, preceding the more publicized Rosa Parks and she was among the five women originally included in the federal court case, filed on February 1, 1956 as Browder v. Gayle, and testified before the three-judge panel that heard the case in the United States District Court. She was only 15 years old were Rosa was 42 at the time of her case. The other women were, Aurelia Browder, Mary Louise Smith and Susie McDonald. At the time of the occurrences on the buses, the leader of the movement didn't know that some women were being breaking the segregation laws to make their cases heard. In about 9 months later Martin Luther king jump out in the next case which was the Rosa Park's case. Rosa lived to a very old age. He died on October 24, 2005 at the age of 92. She was 42 at the time she was arrested and she lost her job so she had to move to another place. In 1932, at age 19, Rosa met and married Raymond Parks, a barber and an active member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. With Raymond's support, Rosa earned her high school degree in 1933. She soon became actively involved in civil rights issues by joining the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP in 1943, serving as the chapter's youth leader as well as secretary to NAACP President E.D. Nixon-a post she held until 1957. Although Parks has sometimes been depicted as a woman with no history of civil rights activism at the time of her arrest, she and her husband, Raymond were, in fact, active in the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and Parks served as its secretary. Sparked by the arrest of Rosa Parks and 5 other unknown women at the time who were Claudette Colvin, Aurelia Browder, Mary Louise Smith and Susie McDonald, on 1 December 1955, and the Montgomery bus boycott was a 13-month mass protest that ended with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that segregation on public buses is unconstitutional.

Rosa Parks was unable to attend college. In 1934 women and blacks were not enrolled in colleges in the south and it isn't until the civil rights movement in the 1960's that the first black man will be enrolled in a southern college in Alabama. Rosa Parks was an African-American.Awhile ago,African-Americans and White people's rights weren't equal,and African-Americans were treated badly.All African-Americans had to sit on the back of the bus,and White people got the front.If an African-American was on the bus first,and sat in the front,and then a white person got on,you had to give up your seat for them.But one day,when Rosa was sitting in the front,and a White person got on the bus,she refused to give up her seat.She felt that African-Americans were not being treated fairly,so she stood up for what she believed.She did get taken to jail.But after,many marches were held.Also,Martin Luther King Jr. made his speech.Many African-Americans boycotted buses,which means to stop going on buses.So many bus companys were about to go out of business.But then,finally,one day they changed the law to no segragation,or no sepration because of race,on public transportation.

Rosa parks enjoyed being at her work and withher husband. but Rosa did not enjoy the bus rides so one day Rosa said no to get up to a white man. and got arrested but she changed the law. That is why she is known as the mother of civil rights. And she had a message it was that "We must come together as one.

Contrary to the folkloric accounts of her civil rights role, Mrs. Parks was not too tired to move. Rather, she had been a knowledgeable NAACP stalwart for many years and gave the organization the incident it needed to move against segregation in the unreconstructed heart of the Confederacy, Montgomery, AL.

Mrs. Parks headed the Youth Division at the Montgomery NAACP branch for years. She is the recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor and the NAACP's Spingarn Medal.
