The discovery of the stone is connected to Bonaparte and his invasion of Egypt. Swiss gold helped finance the enterprise and Bonaparte wanted to advance the ideas of the revolution, bring prosperity to Egypt, and unlock the secrets of the ancient world. A large number of civilians would take part including many men of letters and science. They set sail April 19, 1798. An Institute of Egypt was established organizing the scholars into four sections. Two areas of study resulted into significant and long lasting achievements. The geography was charted of Egypt, great monuments were examined and the science of Egyptology was founded. One of the most important discoveries was the Rosetta stone. It was named after the village where it was found. It is somewhat damaged and missing a large part of the upper left hand corner and a smaller part in the lower right corner. It is in two languages of Greek and Egyptian. The Egyptian is in Hieroglyphs used 3,000 years ago and the second is Demotic a cursive language that evolved from Hieroglyphs and dating from 643 BC.

The stone was found in July 1799, but how it was found is not clear. Some say it was found on the ground . Others say it was part of an old wall, but it was immediately seen as an important find.

It was that experience and confidence in God that caused David to successfully hurl the stone and knock down the giant. He then cut off the giant's head with the giant's own sword.
