Rugby Union is still played because it is one of the more popular sports in the UK, Europe, Australia, Pacific Islands and Asia. Do rugby boots need special studs?
IRB REGULATIONS -- LAW 4.3
Studs/cleats of player's boots must conform with IRB Specifications
(Regulation 12), must not be longer than 21 mm, and must not have any burring or sharp edges.
The stud will be free from serrated edges, and not made of metal or had plastic which will burr when scrapped on a ground based rough surface.
In general the heel studs used in football boots can meet the requirement - however you must be aware of aluminum as these are not covered.
You may also use standard molded soles where the stud is fixed and not replaceable
Why is there a number 23 on the rugby union subs bench?
This person is an extra player to play in the front row position. This player can only come on if all of the other front row players have been used and an injury occurs. The reason the 23rd man has been introduced is to prevent uncontested scrums, which occur when when too many front row player get injured as it is a very specialized position and if an unexperienced player had to play that position without proper training it could be very dangerous for the other front row players.

I believe its in the pre-treatment of the ball. The match ball is pre-stressed at the factory to reduce the flexing of the material when kicked and has a differing type of air valve which is harder wearing to take the impact of the competitive game - it stays inflated to match regulations for longer- this is not the case with a training ball which comes off the production line as is without pre-stressing and a standard valve seating
