When a ruck is formed in rugby union and the ball is released to the scrum half is it true that he does not have to pass it out instead he can simply keep the ball by his feet for as long as he wants?

He can leave it on the ground in the ruck for a while but if he does not pick up the ball eventually the ref will stop play and penalize the team that took the ball into contact (likely that scrumhalf's team). However, if the ball has come out of the ruck (ie is no longer under a ruck player) someone from the other team may take the ball.

How long do rugby boots last?

You really do get what you pay for, so get quality boots. Leather uppers aren't essential, but I prefer them, I think they last longer.

To make them last longer;

Look after them. After you've been playing, brush the mud and grass off your boots and leave them to dry. I leave them near a window for a day-I usually have my window open so the breeze and the sunshine dries them naturally. Never leave them on a radiator, the heat will crack and dry the material.

I clean my boots about once a week. Having knocked the mud off I wash them with a damp cloth (or three, depending on how dirty my boots are). I either leave them to dry naturally or rub them dry with a dry cloth (again, don't use artificial heat), depending on when I need them for.

I then get neutral boot polish and polish all over, including the tongue.

All this will help your boots last longer.

What technology is used in rugby league?

There is a video ref used in Rugby League. In the NRL in Australia and New Zealand, there's one at every game whereas in Europe, there is one at the televised matches, though not at the others.

The video ref was first used to adjudicate, where called for by the on-field referee, on tries only, but his remit has been widened. If the on-field ref has missed some foul play, the video ref can draw it to his attention and 40/20 kicks can be referred (that's when a player kicks from inside his own 40-metre zone and the ball bounces in the field of play before going out in the opposition's 20-metre zone. That results in a scrum to the kicking team).
