What is the statute of limitations on state income tax federal income tax and sales tax?
That should be a simple question, but it's not quite that easy. First, on federal, when it comes to getting a refund, you have three years from the date the return as due. So lets say you didn't file your 2006 and 2007 taxes, it would be too late now to get your 2006 refund, but you could still file your 2007.
But what if you owe money? Then the statute of limitations is 7 years. So you can only get a refund for three, but can still owe for seven. But--and this is important, if the IRS has tried to contact you or if there are extenuating circumstances, they can go back further. I'm an enrolled agent and had to go back 10 years for a client because of "exceptions" to the seven year rule.
States generally follow federal rules, but not always. Also, states often can't even begin to process their audits until they hear from the federal government so it's rare that a state issue will be cleared up before a federal one.
Sales tax issues also vary by state but your time limit is much shorter. Also, the penalties can include putting you out of business.
Is there sales tax on clothing in the state of Illinois?
The State of Illinois does not have a sales tax exemption for clothing, which includes footware. The State of Illinois only has a lower sales tax of about 2% on food and medicine. Cola, candy, ice teas, and fruit drinks are NOT considered to be food. However, candy that has flour in it, like Butterfinger and Kit Kat ARE considered to be food, thus getting the lower tax. Everything that is not food or medicine is taxed at the higher 7.75%, which may be a little higher or lower depending on local sales taxes.

Being a resident of Alaska do you have to pay sales tax in Washington?
There is stipulations to paying sales tax or not. Here is the link...http://www.dor.wa.gov/Content/FindTaxesAndRates/RetailSalesTax/Nonresidents/default.aspx
Just remember a store decides whether they will charge sales tax or not to a non resident. If they do then they are a part of the program listed in the link.
No they do not decide....if you have the proper documentation AND qualify for the exemption they must not charge tax.
However, in reality, most things you buy, especially if your just visiting from out of state, will be taxable (they are not exempt). And if they are, then - law abiding and demanding person you be - you MUST by law, report and pay any taxes at your place of residence (since that is where you would be using them, and that incurrs the tax most anyplace).
Remember:
The law provides an exemption for:
The exemption does not apply to charges for services that are included within the definition of the term "sale at retail." This includes, but is not limited to, services such as:
The exemption also does not apply to sales of articles substantially used or consumed within Washington. This includes, but is not limited to sales of:
Is it legal to tax a service charge?
You can thank our wonderful government for taxes. If you are being taxed for something that money goes to the government so yes it is legal. A company wouldn't tax you for an item unless the government makes them tax you for it. A company is nothing more than an unpaid tax collector when it comes to taxes.
Added: Check your state tax codes carefully. In some states it is unlawful to tax an intangible "service." Something for which no actual tangible or identifiable "product" is delivered. (e.g.: You can tax a quart of milk or a loaf of bread, but you can't charge tax for the smile the cashier gives you as you check out).
Are there federal deductions for sales tax on new cars?
Not exactly. Starting a few years ago, all were given the choice of deducting EITHER state income tax paid, OR state sales tax paid. Normally, if you live in a state with income tax, it is most beneficial to use that as your deduction...but if you live in a state with no income tax - the sales tax works...and when you have paid a lot of sales tax in a year...perhaps because of car, boat, etc purchases...it can be the better way in either case.
AND - as part of the incentive programs in effect now - 2009 - there is a special allowance for deducting sales tax on new cars...with a number of restrictions.
