Has anyone heard of yorkies having scoliosis?
Any animal can be born with scoliosis. It's usually a genetic defect.
What are some superstitions about those who have scoliosis?
Myths and Facts about Spinal Deformity :
1. The condition is a curse from god for sins committed in previous life. FACT: The condition results from uneven growth of the spine during the growing period.
2. People with spinal deformity are a curse to the society and need to be outcast from the society to redeem them from their previous sins. Normal children should not be allowed to interact with them.
FACT: Teenagers suffer profound psychological trauma and isolation for no fault or wrongdoing on their part. Teenagers become outcast from society, affecting their career and marital prospects adversely.
3. Children with spinal deformity are handicapped both mentally and physically and cannot do physical or mental activities done by a normal child of same age.
FACT: Spinal Deformity does not cause by itself any type of mental or physical handicap. They are not mentally retarded and can do all activities done by a normal child of same age.
4. Children with "Crooked Spine" have limited life span and die early with suffering as it is a curse of god.
FACT: Spinal deformity does not alter the life expectancy and Children with crooked spine have normal life span. Also the condition does not cause any disability or pain at this age. However, if the deformity is neglected and allowed to progress with the curve exceeding 100 degrees, the functioning of heart and lungs may be affected. In this situation the child may have difficulty in breathing and in extreme cases may lead to a life threatening condition.
5. "Crooked Spine" is a curse of god and has no remedies or treatment.
FACT: The field of spine surgery has been progressing rapidly in the last two decades with thorough understanding of dynamics of spinal deformities. A safe and effective surgical solution is possible now possible for children with spinal deformities. As the rest of the body organs and functions are essentially normal, a timely corrective surgery can be life-changing for these children as they can lead a normal adult life with full life span.
6. Spine surgery for Deformity is very risky and often leads to paralysis.
FACT: Today Surgery for spinal deformity is about 98% safe. World-wide studies have shown that the results of these surgeries are excellent with risk of paralysis to be less than 1% in most cases and about 2% in severe cases (SRS morbidity and Mortality data 2011).
7. Spinal surgery for deformity correction should be done only after 18 years of age.
Fact: With advancement in spinal instrumentation and techniques, spinal deformity surgery can now be done at any age starting from as young as 1-2 years. It is very important to address the deformity early to avoid progression of the curve beyond 80-100 degree, when it can become life-threatening.
Does scoliosis affect the lifespan of a person?
No. The slight curvature it causes in the spine has no impact on lifespan.
How are muscle spasms and cramps caused by dehydration and salt depletion?
Loss of fluids and salts--especially sodium, potassium, magnesium , and calcium--can disrupt ion balances in both muscle and nerves. This can prevent them from responding and recovering normally, and can lead to a cramp.
An arthropathy is any of a group of several diseases of a joint.
Does sitting relieve pain from scoliosis?
I have pain is lumbar area that is relieved with sitting. I know I have scoliosis, I believe it came about after I suffered a tibial plateau fracture and after 10 years of no back pain. Is my pain from scoliosis or is it spinal arthritic changes?
it can be it depends on how severe it is, and if it worsens The cures are either braces to straighten your back or back surgery which isn't horrible but recovery time is up to a year
If you have scoliosis do you need surgery?
Scoliosis, if not caught early and corrected with a brace or myoelectric stimulation, can require corrective surgery to halt the progressive worsening.
I the curve is 20 degrees or less you must just watch it, so it doesnt get worse.
If the curve is 20-40 degrees you would need a brace.(it is quite tight)
I the curve is over 40 degrees you would need surgery(an operation).
I've got scoliosis myself and its about seventy degrees, I'm having an operation soon.
(so i know all these things)
ok so another person said the top they did good i just wanted to add a little
when i first went to the doctor for scoliosis i had to get a brace cause my curve was like 26 i think i don't know i was in 4th grade now im going into 7th grade. i wore a brace all the way till i was almost done with 6th grade. my curve was getting worse.
so the doctor told me i had to have surgery cause by that time my curve was around 70 degrees. the day of the surgery i was really nervous they gave me this mask and it put me to sleep when i woke up it felt like i was asleep for 15 minutes but really it was 6 hours. i didnt really think about that much when i woke up though cause i was a little out of it. i had a butten to push that gave me medicine when i needed it. i don't remember much after that mask was put on my face. i don't even remember going to my room in the hospital. but i remember my room mate was a baby screaming and crying lol. by the third day they had me walking i didnt like to do it but they made me so i could get out of the hospital as soon as possible. i was out of the hospital by the 5th day! i went home and i remember my brother and sister made me a welcome home banner and gave me a basket full of snacks and movies! a couple of weeks later i had my teacher come in to teach me an hour a day i didnt go back to school till like a month and a half later. but then by like July 10th i was doing feild day at school! now it has almost been 6 months and i am dancing and swimming and everything. so that is a short story of what i had to go threw with scoliosis but everyone is diffrent so you might not need surgery.
Is swimming good for scoliosis persons?
I can only answer from personal experience. I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was 20 years old and have been an exercise junkie since then because keeping active has always helped with the pain. I am 49 years old now and a couple of years ago the pain started getting worse. I decided to start swimming since I had recently moved into a house only 6 blocks from an indoor pool. It was one of the smartest things I have ever done. I have been swimming for almost 2 years now, 4-5 times a week. When I first started out I had bad technique and it actually made my pain worse. I watched and talked to good swimmers and got some pointers. (Also watched youtube videos)
I do freestyle for 40-45 minutes (had to work up to it) The key for me was BALANCE and stretching. I learned to turn my head every third stroke to breath. Took some getting use to but it works the best. This way your not turning your head the same way every time. Then I started to flip at the end of the pool to make the whole motion more fluid. I even flip to different sides. Remember BALANCE! I wear a noseplug to keep that chlorinated water from getting into my sinuses. I also realized that when I turned my head to the right side I wasn't kicking or stretching out (the right side is the side that is all cramped up on me, could be different for you). When I turned to that side I had this funny feeling that I was falling but the more I stretch the less I experience it and it is almost gone now. Going fast is not important. Long strokes are important and I actually go a lot faster with less strokes. It use to take me 31 strokes to get to the end of the pool. Now I do it in 22-23.
I also do a modified back stroke using an exercise I learned at a chiropractor when I was younger. (Haven't been to a chiro since, can't afford it)
Another thing I highly recommend is an inversion table. It really helps to stretch you out. They cost a couple hundred dollars but was a great investment.
Hope this helps. Remember balance and stretch, stretch, stretch!!!!
Can scoliosis cause muscle weakness in legs?
Yes, due to the various problems linked to scolisos. Individuals with scolisos may have a slight (or not so slight) leg length differential. The longer leg hits the ground first - but it has not stretchabilty to it. It is harder to stretch, and muscles are tight, compacted and it can, as years go on, cause great discomfort, and with weaker muscle function in the longer leg.
What movement will you have in my back after scoliosis surgery?
it probably depends on your curvature and if you have a single or double curve, but i had the surgery about 7 months ago. i had a double curve. the first month was hard but after that i recovered really quickly. i can twist side to side and bend from my hips like normal the only thing that is different is that I'm not able to arch or hollow my back like before the surgery.
Will your insurance pay for a thorocoplasty separate from your spinal fusion for scoliosis?
In cases where scoliosis has caused a significant deformity resulting in a rib hump, it is often possible to perform a surgery called a "costoplasty" (also called "thorocoplasty") in order to achieve a more pleasing cosmetic result. This procedure may be performed at any time after a fusion surgery, whether as part of the same operation or several years afterwards. It is usually impossible to completely straighten and untwist a scoliotic spine, and it should be noted that the level of cosmetic success will depend on the extent to which the fused spine still rotates out into the ribcage. A rib hump is evidence that there is still some rotational deformity to the spine. Specific weight training techniques can be used to influence this rotational deformity in the unfused parts of the spine. This leads to a marked decrease in pain and to some improvement in organ function depending on the person's particular case and is to be recommended over any cosmetic surgical procedure. Knowing insurance companies, I doubt they would cover a thorocoplasty as part of a Scoliosis claim, unless you can get your Dr on side and find a medical reason why you would also need this as part of your surgery. Because it is considered to be plastic surgery, you may struggle to get them to pay for it, it is not a very common procedure in the UK, although, there are people requesting it on the NHS.
Facet arthrosis is the inflammation of the facet joint. Humans have 25 of these going down the spine. As the body ages, the spaces between the joint are less resilient and medical or surgical intervention can become necessary.
What is thoracolumbar spondylosis?
Thoracolumbar spondylitis can be referred to as lumbar spondylitis or cervical spondylitis. Thoracolumbar refers to the lumbar or thoracic vertebrae. It is a form of arthritis due to age-related disease in joints and the spine.
What does right convexity thoracolumbar scoliosis mean and what are some of the systoms?
Scoliosis is termed as the lateral curvature of your spine.
It can either be structural or non structural.
Structural is when your spine side bends and also has a rotational component.
Non- Structural is when your spine just has a side bend component and it can be removed with change in position/posture.
Symptoms Might include:
Difficulty bending and reaching on the side of scoliosis, Shortened muscles on the concavity side if scoliosis is longstanding, severe conditions might reduce the capacity of your lungs, Walking in a correct and natural manner might be difficult, an evident curve might be seen.
Depending upon the curve, scoliosis is named. If your spine curve has convexity towards the right, it will be right scoliosis and a spine with convex left side is a left scoliosis.
While screening for scoliosis, you will have to have a keen observation.
Observe a person from the back rather than from the front.
Things to observe will be:
1. Raised shoulder on the side of scoliosis
2. Raised iliac crest (top crest of your hip bone) on the side of scoliosis.
3. Look as if the person is bending to the opposite side.
You might want to perform an Alan's Forward bend test
Here, ask the person to touch the toes with bending the back and keeping the knees straight.
If there is a hump on the back raised one particular side then we can say that its a structural scoliosis.
Based on a test called Cobb's Angle test, your orthopedic doctor will determine the amount of problem you have.
Based on Cobb's Angle results treatment can be done by
a. Physical Therapy
b. Orthosis
c. Surgery
If treated and cared early, scoliosis can be reversed very easily and can facilitate a better lifestyle.
If it has been happening to you recently ,then you have probably pulled a muscle!
Majority of cases are treatable and these days surgery is so good it is not heard of in the west of terminal cases, with good treatment scoliosis can be dealt with
There are minor cases of death where Scoliosis is concerned but we don´t see that in the west
What does moderate thoracolumbar scoliosis convex left mean?
I wouldn't be searching for information if I knew the answer.
Can scoliosis worsen even after wearing a brace?
Most definitely. I wear a back brace currently and it straitens my back while I'm wearing it , but doesn't stop its curve for good. After two nights without it it will continue to grow.
What kind of disorder is scoliosis and why?
Scoliosis is when your spine curves. It can be cause by sitting and standing with bad posture.
Can scoliosis cause breathing problems?
It might, but you should have a braceing or even surgery before it gets that bad. Scoliosis is not likely to case pain in young patients, but if it grows, it should be braced.
Yes it can, I was diagnosed with scoliosis at 10 and wore a back-brace for years. The scoliosis has also deformed my ribs, which causes problems with my lungs, for me, it's not constant, rarely I have shortness of breath, pain while breathing in and out or pressure in my chest (like the wind is knocked out of me). All of these only last for a few seconds at a time (maybe a minute) and not daily, sometimes not even weekly. I was told by my doctor that this is fine unless it gets worse. But I would suggest talking to your doctor about it, your situation may be worse or different than mine. Hope I helped and good luck!
