Sean Connery quit the role. George Lazenby got the part, but decided during filming that he could not handle all the attention. The producers did little to promote the film knowing that they would replace him in the next film.

I would have sworn it was him but after looking it up on the IMDB, I found the actor who played Ned Conrad was Douglas Fowley. For 5 years, from "Dr. No' in 1962 to "You Only Live Twice" in 1967. He reprised the role once more in "Diamonds Are Forever" in 1971. There was also a remake of "Thunderball" in the 1980s called "Never Say Never Again," but movie purists do not consider it a true Bond film, as it was done by a different studio, producers, etc. (and also, in my opinion, was nowhere near as good as "Thunderball.")

It must be noted that Diamonds Are Forever (1970) was the last Bond film that Connery did for EON productions, after which Roger took over in Let and Let Die in 1973. However, Connery did another Bond role in Never Say Never Again (1983) for Kevin McClory. NSNA was a remake of Thunderball, and had a cameo appearance by Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean).

Sean Connery is not dead- he is just retired from acting because of severe health problems.
