How many steps up to Sherlock Holmes' Baker Street apartment?

The conversation from 'A Scandal in Bohemia' went like this:

HOLMES: ". . . For example, you have frequently seen the steps which lead up from the hall to this room."

WATSON: "Frequently."

HOLMES: "How often?"

WATSON: "Well, some hundreds of times."

HOLMES: "Then how many are there?"

WATSON: "How many! I don't know."

HOLMES: "Quite so! You have not observed. And yet you have seen. That is just my point. Now, I know that there are seventeen steps, because I have both seen and observed. . . ."

There are also steps leading further up to more rooms, but a count has never been given for those.

Three famous quotes from Sherlock Holmes stories?

I believe it was a methodology to determine if a crime had been committed, and way to not automatically jump to that conclusion. But I could have this completely wrong:

Example - you come home, and the vase of flowers is knocked over, and there's a puddle of water on the floor.

1) Can the facts be explained by natural law? If the window was open, it's possible the wind knocked the vase over. Or an earthquake could have occured. If natural law runs contrary to the facts (i.e. the window was closed and there were no earthquakes), go to 2.

2) Can the facts be explained by chance? Some things just happen sometimes, but it's rather unlikely that the vase randomly decided to fall over, so go to 3.

3) Can the facts be explained by design? That is, did someone plan and execute a crime here? Was there a motive, and an action? Prehaps our naughty Simaese cat has knocked the vase over to get at the fresh water inside? Clever plan, and an inspection of the wood floor shows the tell-tale wet pawprints. Elementary, my dear Ruckus!

Where can you watch episodes of Sherlock Holmes?

I think that it depends on whether or not you believe that Sherlock Holmes was ever alive, or if he were simply a fictional character. If you are a Sherlockian, and believe that he was real, then I figure that he is probably dead by now, simply because he was 'supposedly' born January 6, 1854. Which at this point in time, would make him about 156 years old. It is possible, (I guess) that he could have lived that long, but I highly doubt it.

As for, if you believe that he was fictional, well.... he technically was never alive to begin with. Unless you are speaking of his life through the world of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In that case, I'm not exactly sure because it is claimed that he had died once at a waterfall, and later revealed himself to be alive the entire time. So, he may very well have died later on and has simply not 'come back to life' again.

Does Irene Adler love Sherlock Holmes?

Not in A Scandal in Bohemia.

In SCAN, Irene falls in love with a lawyer she had hired named Godfrey Norton. He's an impetuous, excitable but well-mannered guy described as a "remarkably handsome man, dark, aquiline, and moustached". The two of them get married, with Holmes being a witness to the ceremony.

Any romantic relationship between Holmes and the former Prima Donna comes from other people's imaginations (and maybe the recent movies directed by Guy Ritchie).

What do you call the hat that Sherlock homes Where is?

Because of the early Sherlock Holmes movies, the hat most commonly associated with him is the "deerstalker".

In the stories, the hat is never clearly identified, but it is described in one story as a "close-fitting cloth cap" and in another as "his ear-flapped travelling cap". A deerstalker fits both those descriptions, and would have been a common choice of cap in the setting (in both stories, he's in a rural area and out of doors much of the time).

However, the Holmes described in Conan-Doyle's stories would never wear such a hat at all times; it's a hat such as might be worn outdoors in the country, not one that anyone of the era would wear in downtown London. Contemporary illustrators drawing Holmes in the city would usually depict him in a top hat or bowler, both of which would have been considered appropriate urban headgear.

What are some quotes from Dr Roylott in The Adventure of the Speckled Band?

'The force of his character'

'Don't you dare meddle with my affairs.'

'Resemblance of a fierce bird of prey.'

All help describe Dr Roylott and can be used well to explain his character.

Was Sherlock Holmes rich?

Sherlock Holmes came from a rich family. "My ancestors were country squires, who appear to have led much the same life as is natural to their class." Country squires meant landowners, hence "old money". He was well educated, as one can tell from his speech, and his uncaring attitude towards money speaks of a life where he never wanted for anything he might've truly needed.

Who was Sherlock Holmes' neighbor?

As far as who lived next door to him (such as in 220 Baker Street), it is not mentioned in the canonical stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Only does it say that he lives in a boarding house with two others - the first being Mrs. Hudson, the landlady, who lives on the lower (ground) floor and cooks and cleans the house, and the other being (naturally) Dr. John Watson, whose bedroom is on the third (second) floor. Holmes' room is on the second (first floor) as well as the men's shared sitting room.

The only other I can think of is Madame Tussaud's, which opened on the Baker Street Bazaar in 1835.

How do you become as brilliant as professor moriarty?

Practice deductive reasoning and make a habit of looking at the small, minor details. Also, pick up only trivia and skills that would be useful to you and your work. Everything else is unimportant and not worth keeping in mind. That would be a start. Most importantly, do not jump to conclusions before you have found all you need to know and weeded out everything irrelevant.

Answer:

In addition to the above and depending on hw much you want to be like Holmes there are other attributes you should consider.

Learn unusual skills

  • disguise and acting to blend into crowds
  • stick and cane fighting (Bartitsu)
  • memorize vast amounts of trivial knowledge
  • write tretises on arcane subjects (pipe tobacco ash etc.)

On the negative side:

  • develop a cocaine habit
  • be uncomfortable with women
  • live in a messy apartment
  • play violin badly
  • smoke a Meerschaum pipe
  • discharge your guns in the house
  • treat your friends badly

These negative habits will not make you smart, like Holmes is, but they will make you seem like him to your friends.
