Shot Put

A shot put is a heavy round ball (almost like a huge bullet) that is used in Track and Field. The athlete will take the shot put and throw it into the air. The person who throws it the farthest will get the most points and win.

The most famous at the moment is Valeri Adams who has won in both the Olympic and the Commonwealth

It is usually referred to as a netball court and is 30.5m long (100ft) by 15.25m (50ft).

To make a throw, the competitor starts in a circle of 2.5 m (8 feet 21⁄4 in) diameter, which is recessed in a concrete pad by 20 mm. The thrower typically takes an initial stance facing away from the direction of the throw. The discus must land within a 34.92-degree sector. The rules of competition for discus are virtually identical to those of shot put, except that the circle is larger, a stop board is not used and there are no form rules concerning how the discus is to be thrown.

The shot put field event originated in the Olymipics. It was a test of strength between various athletes. The athlete who could heave the shot the farthest was the champion.

Originally the shot put was a large stone. Since it has become a 16-pound ball made of a metal not softer than brass. Most of the times it is filled with lead.

In older times, the athlete must stand on a wooden rectangle to throw. If he went outside of it, he fouled and his throw was discounted. At the time, a standing throw was the only way to put. Since, the rectangle has become a seven-foot circle. The glide has been developed since. It is used to gain momentum and create more force. Another type of throw has also been made. The rotational throw generates more force because of a longer push with the shot put.

In shot put you are tested on strength and in some cases muscular endurance. You have to throw a heavy ball ( following some rules) as far as you can!

There are two correct technique for shot put. Don't be fooled by the big strong people who scream. They are either using the Glide or the spin technique.

There are many pages online about how to do them. Personally, I use the power position. I have made over 40' easy with that. And note, I can only bench like 110lbs and my arms are weak. But i have been doing track for 5 years.

But to answer your question, any technique that is comfortable for you is the correct technique.

The lightest shot is 4.4 pounds and has a diameter of 80 to 90 millimeters. The heaviest shot weighs 16 pounds and has a diameter of 110 to 130 millimeters. There are sizes in between. The size used by the athlete is determined by age and gender.

Additionally, athletes with significant disabilities are classified by gripping ability, sitting balance, trunk control and standing ability. Paralympic athletes use standard shot weights.

Let's clear up a little terminology, first. "Shot" means a round ball of lead, steel, or some other metal. SHOT guns use small BB sized shot. A cannon may use a 6" or 8" shot that is fired at an enemy.

In track and field, there also is a 'shot' which is 'put' as far as the competitor can.

So,a boy's 'shot' may be around 1kg, depending.

The "Shot Put" is the name of the Field event, not the round, heavy thingie.
