A form of skiing?

Two answers after a merger:

1. As two different sports, they both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Skiing can be used for hiking, if a free heel binding is used, and is easier to use as a transportation tool.

It takes a long time to excel at (years), but is easier for the first two days.

Skiing switch (backwards) adds a new dimension to skiing, and you can do more grabs and jibs on rails, because you have two separate skis.

You can generally go bigger and faster on skis.

Snowboarding is a different feeling, because you are practically surfing on snow.

This is the main appeal of snowboarding, especially when riding in powder, because you are on top of the snow, rather than moving through it.

It is hard to pick up in the first few days, especially without a teacher, but you can get relatively good in two seasons.

It is easier to do rails and boxes on a snowboard, which is a big advantage for many, and also easier to have style when freeriding and riding in the park.

Snowboard Boots are much more comfortable than Ski Boots.

Everybody Snowboards and Skis differently, so there are many different opinions on the subject.

2. I Think skiing is way better because You have less chance of being hurt and at the same time you go faster than a snowboard... Yes you can do a little more tricks on a snowboard and yes the skiis are more expensive to buy but you have way more fun on skiis.

What is the busiest ski resort in America?

Generally large coporate-owned ski resorts containing many on-site lodging options and high-speed chairlifts, which are located within a few hours drive from major metropolitan areas, particularly if they are close to a divided highway or interstate.

And its all about WHEN:

Saturdays are always the busiest. Sundays are typically much less crowded, particularly in the afternoons. Weekdays are always the least crowded, especially Tue-Thurs (as Fri and Mon are usually made into long weekends). School vacation weeks and holiday weekends are always more crowded than usual. (anytime they mountain is charging weekend/holiday rates)

Examples:

1. the ski resorts of Summit and Eagle Counties in Colorado, including Vail, Copper, Breckenridge, Keystone, and Winter Park.

2. New Hampshire mountains located off of 93 including Loon, Cannon, Waterville

3. VT resorts close to the metro areas of Boston, Hartford, NYC, and Montreal, including Killington, Mt Snow, Sugarbush, and Stowe.

Can you go skiing in September?

One can easily ski in September in the Andes (for example, at Portillo) or in New Zealand. As for the Northern Hemisphere, when September would be late summer, the answer varies. Sometimes, snow lasts into September at very high altitude ski areas with glacial fields, such as Mt. Hood or Colorado's Arapahoe Basin. More often, new snow for the new season has arrived in time for some un-lifted skiing on snow fields in the high Rockies; "un-lifted" being that one needs to hike up the snow field. Rarely is there enough skier interest to make it affordable to keep as staff around to run the lifts. Un-lifted skiing can also be practiced sometimes in Scandinavia, Austria, or Switzerland, though lately this has been increasingly rare. Especially in the Alps, the glaciers are shrinking.

How do you do a backflip on skis?

This is a question that definitely shouldn't be answered on Wikianswers because if you don't have the skill (in other words, don't already know how) you NEED to learn how to from a professional, otherwise you could seriously injure, or even KILL, yourself, probably to show off to a few buddies.

Is alpine skiing an individual or team sport?

It can be. Alpine skiing means downhill skiing while nordic skiing is cross-country skiing. Freestyle is part of alpine, but instead of just going down the mountain freestyle is specifially jumps, grinds tricks etc.

What is the oldest ski lift in the world?

How many ski resorts are there in Norway?

"Trysilfjellet" in the city Trysil is the biggest ski resort in Norway.

Best ski resort in Lake Tahoe?

The largest ski resort in the world, without competition, is Les 3 Vallées in France with the major villages Val Thorens, Les Menuires, Meribel and Courchevel. Les 3 Vallées has 600 km of piste which no other linked ski area is close to.

Here is a list of the 10 largest linked (piste or lift) ski areas, their piste length in km, number of lifts, transport capacity per hour and country.

1. Les 3 Vallées 600 196 242.000 France

2. Paradiski 425 187 210.000 France

3. Via Lattea 400 78 110.000 Italy & France

4. Sella ronda 330 155 240.000 Italy, which is a part of Dolomiti Superski

5. Les Sybelles 310 71 80.000 France

6. 4 Vallées 300 64 65.000 Switzerland

7. Matterhorn ski paradise 300 58 99.500 Switzerland & Italy

8. Espace Killy 300 94 136.000 France

9. Avoriaz 270, 79, 100.000 France & Switzerland, which is part of Portes du Soleil

10. Skiwelt 263 91 138.000 Austria

Ski routes are not included in the table above. If these are included are the piste lengths: 4 Vallées 370 (incl the ski route connected La Tzoumaz sector), Matterhorn ski paradise 350 and Skiwelt 279 km.

A ski area can be defined in several ways, one is a number of lifts and slopes which are all interconnnected with each other without the need for a bus or car ride (as the list shown above). Another definition of a ski area would be a lift pass valid in several (or multiple) separate systems with a need for a bus or a car ride to get inbetween them.

A list for the latter definition would give the following lift passes:

1. Tirol Snow Card with 4000 km of piste in 86 ski regions (Skiwelt is part of this).

2. Salzburg super ski card with 2552 km of piste in 22 ski regions.

3. Dolomiti Superski with 1200 km of piste divided into about 30 separate systems (Sella ronda is part of this).

4. Kitzbuheler alpen all star card with 1088 km of piste in 12 different systems (Skiwelt is part of this).

Please note that all these 4 ski areas are geographically so spread out so there are several hours drive from one end to the other so you can not really make use of the entire region available for the ski pass.

More ski passes on this list would be Ski amadé with 860 km of piste (about 20 systems), the Zillertal Superskipass with 671 km of piste (7 systems) and Portes du Soleil with 650 km of piste (Avoriaz is part of this, 7 systems), all three of which are geographically within reasonable driving distance or bus interconnected.

The biggest ski area available on one ski pass within a 30 minutes drive from a suitable accomodation is probably the major parts of the Kitzbuheler alpen all star card. From St Johann in Tirol you can reach over 800 km of piste in 30 minutes by car (Schneewinkel, Skiwelt, Saalbach (via Leogang) and Kitzbuhel).

The Shrahe report that was published in autumn 2013 shows that most resorts exaggerate their piste length of up to 150%. The numbers above are taken from before that report. The austrian resort have generally adjusted their piste length down whereas most other have not adjusted their piste length or have simply taken away the piste length information. Adjusting the austrian numbers down while keeping the others would be unfare, especially since the austrians seems to have a smaller inflation factor than the others. So for now the old numbers remains.

How does skiing work?

Maybe this will help. THIS WILL PUT THE SKI WAX COMPANIES OUT OF BUSINESS

Ingredients and formula for super fast ,all temp, racing ski wax:(1) 5 lbs of paraffin wax(preferably 150degree or higher melt temp 160 is optimal)

(2) 1/2 lb of paraflint wax hardener (3) a bar of Ivory soap (4) a regular size tube of Crest high fluoride toothpaste (5)a heaping tablespoon of spruce gum(resin from a spruce tree) The paraffin and paraflint hardener can be easily and cheaply obtained from most candle supply companies. The soap and toothpaste should be easy enough. The spruce gum can be obtained from any specie of spruce tree.It exudes from wounds in the bark or broken branches.Make sure it is soft and clean, free from any dirt or bark. In addition to these ingredients you will also need: Another person to help,an outdoor cookstove or grill,a freezer,a large and small cooking pot, stove mitts,a butterknife,a cheesegrater,a blender,a clock or watch,a bowl, a few pie tins or tin bread molds to pour the liquid wax into, and a large very fine mesh strainer(found in Walmart in the cooking utensils aisle). CAUTION:MELTING WAX CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS.IT IS ADVISABLE TO HAVE SOMEONE ELSE PRESENT WHEN MAKING THIS WAX.MELT IT OUTDOORS AWAY FROM BUILDINGS TO AVOID FIRE.KEEP CHILDREN AND ANIMALS AWAY Step1-Put the pie tins or tin bread molds in the freezer to get them cold. Step2-With the cheesegrater, fine grate the entire bar of soap into the bowl. Step3-With the butterknife thinly spread the spruce gum on one side of all the bars of paraffin.(To make this easier you may need to warm the gum near a gentle heat source) Step4-Pour the paraflint into the small cooking pot,put it on the burner and turn on the flame(low heat). Step5-Put a bar of paraffin in the big cooking pot(gum side up),put it on the burner and turn on the flame(high heat). When the bar melts put in another and when that melts another…until all are melted. Step6-As soon as all bars of wax are melted begin blending the wax and gum while pouring in the soap.Continue blending.(high speed) Step7-When the soap and wax are thoroughly blended, squeeze the entire tube of toothpaste into the mixture while blending and continue to blend until the toothpaste is thoroughly incorperated into the mixture.(Some insoluble particulates from the soap and toothpaste will have to be strained later before pouring into the molds) Step8-By now the paraflint hardener should be completely melted. If it is turn off the flame under the small pot of paraflint and pour it into the big pot of wax. Step9-Continue to blend the mixture for 2 minutes. Step10-Get the wax molds out of the freezer, turn off the flame of the big pot,put on the stove mitts and carefully pour the hot wax through the fine mesh strainer into the molds.(THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. ALSO,DO NOT POUR THE WAX TO THE TOP OF THE MOLDS) Step 11-Carefully but quickly put the liquid wax in the freezer.(It is important that the wax cool quickly) Wait for it to harden in the mold. Step12-You now have a super fast, long lasting, all temp ski wax.Enjoy! I can't believe what a racket the ski wax industry is.

Being a recreational ski racer and skiing often I go through a lot of wax. I realized I just couldn't afford the expensive waxes and powders anymore so I decided to make my own. After much study and experimentation I finally got it.I can't believe it is so simple and cheap.

WHY IT WORKS:

The addition of the hardener makes the wax fast in cold, dry conditions. Hard wax is also more resistant to dirt and doesn't wear off as fast. The spruce gum acts as a flexible bonding agent to the base of the ski and a bond and vehicle for the chemicals in the other ingredients. The soap also has some of these properties as well as being a surfactant and detergent to break the surface tension of the layer of water between snow and ski and repel dirt and grease. This is also chemically enhanced by the surfactant in the toothpaste. This makes the ski faster in all conditions and temperatures but is especially helpful in warm weather when snow gets wet and greasy. And the toothpaste? What a cheap way to get fluorinated ski wax! The turpines in the spruce gum and chemicals in the soap and toothpaste combine to chemically alter the fluoride in the toothpaste, bonding and completely suspending it as fluorinate throughout the ski wax during the heated mixing. This makes the wax so much faster. And there you have it- Over 5 lbs of durable, superfast, all temp and condition, fluorinated ski wax for less than $30. Note:I am not responsible for anything that may happen as a result of anyone reading the above.

How is streamlining used in sport?

To ensure there is as little friction or drag as possible for example the streamlined helmets that bicyclists wear or the full body swim suits that are becoming popular for swimmers. Swimmers also shave body hair to streamline their bodies and reduce drag.

Does skiing and snowboarding go on the same slopes?

No. Snowboard cross is a downhill sport, but the slopes are not any where near as steep as downhill racing - snowboarding on an Olympic level downhill ski course would be suicide.

Where is the best powder snow in Japan?

The best powder snow in Japan typically falls in the prefectures of Niigata and Nagano. People often think Niseko which is in Hokkaido snows the most in Japan but very few people know that the Myoko area in Niigata has some of the highest snowfall on average around the world at about 18m annually. Lotte Arai which is in the Myoko area is one of the snowiest places in Niigata was also rated the best ski resort in Japan in 2020. Seki Onsen and Lotte Arai have a incredible base of over 5m. Akakura Kanko resort is also a very famous resort that is my personal favorite due to its powder quality and terrain.

What do you wear to downhill ski?

How to dress when skiing and snowboarding is all about layering.

Note: do NOT wear cotton, as cotton retains water and keep your skin cool.

Layering basically has three parts

Base Layer - The layer next to your skin should be made of a moisture wicking material to keep your skin dry.

Mid Layer - This layer should also be made of a moisture wicking material to keep the moisture moving away from your skin.

Outer Layer - The outer layer should be made of a water proof breathable material to let the moisture out, but also keep the outside elements out.

Is snow skiing more dangerous than water skiing?

if u hit something or someone, it could kill you OR if you fall and your ski hits you in the head, it could knock you out and you could drown. not to mention paralization, broken bones, loss of limbs, etc. but it is still fun, and you should try it! =)

What is the best temperature to go skiing 20c 20f?

Neither one. Snow starts to melt at 0 c, so you'd be looking at really ugly conditions at 10 c. 40 c is a good temperature for water skiing. Minus-10 c would be a fine temperature for snow skiing; minus-40 c would be dangerous because of the risk of cold weather injury.

Do you need specific sunglasses for skiing?

Skiing is a very intensive sport on the eyes, due to there often being little cloud cover and a bright sunshine that reflects off the snow. It is best to use sunglasses that offer good UV protection, such as the ones from a ski shop. There are many sunglasses available at the resorts if you are having problems picking the right ones, but these are likely to be more expensive.

Why is skiing easy but difficult to walk on snow?

Ice skates have less surface area in contact with the ice.

I'm a figure skater, and I think for most people who have never ice skated before, walking on frozen ice is easier, because you are use to walking, and you have more of you touching the ice, while in ice skating you only have the bottom of a blade

but the blade is sharp metal so it grabs the ice in a way shoes slip n slide on ice
