There are four different species of skunks found in North America and the most common is the striped skunk. Spotted skunks usually live in northern Mexico. Hooded skunks are found in the southwestern parts of the United States. Skunks like to live in open lands next to forest areas and in clearings. Skunks typically make their homes along rivers, logs, or in thickets. Most skunks have more than one home and will travel from one to the other during the day. If they get near human homes, they will pick sheds, porches, decks and woodpiles to construct a home at. Skunks are also sensitive to light, so they will find a place that is relatively dark.

I'd just go spend a hundred dollars on a variety of cleaners and odor removers and then air out that area of the house as much as possible, throw out anything that was absorbent. Probably still less than the deductible. Not to mention the possibility of an increased premium at renewal time due to prior claims and a loss of any claim free discounts.

The standard exclusion under almost every homeowner's policy with regards to this: "birds, vermin, rodents, insects, or animals owed or kept by an insured".... Read between the lines- its not an absolute animal exclusion as original response suggests. Pull your policy and read it. AnswerSo, a skunk is not a bird, rodent, insect, nor an animal kept by you (I would hope), BUT, they MAY be considered "vermin". Now, I have had 2 clients with the same claim (skunk contamination), one insurance company covered it, but the other did not. The one that did not cover it felt skunks fell under the "vermin" definition. If your insurance company defines skunk as vermin, i would suggest you find a new insurer. Even worse, if they try to invoke the "pollutant" exclusion, fight them on it! The company that covered the skunk claim has a 5 letter name, begins with "C" and ends with "B"...Source- 10 years insurance industry experience.

Use a small trap just big enough for the skunk to get in. It MUST be small enough to prevent the skunk from lifting it's tail. The skunk can't spray if it can't lift it's tail. Once the skunk is trapped he may be safely relocated. To release the skunk simply place the trap on the ground and open the door. I know that sounds scary but the skunk will nonchalantly walk out and away.

Cirumstantial evidence, but I think a skunk did eat two of our kittens. Our kittens were in a wooden cat house with the entrance about a foot back from our back wall, entrance facing the wall. Last night when it was getting dark I saw a skunk walking away from the house area. This morning I found the skeletal remains of two of the kittens at the door of the cat house--only skulls and fur left.
