Skunks

The size of a cat or smaller with long fur and bushy tails, skunks are easily identified by their distinctive black and white coloration. These near-sighted omnivores have a hearty appetite for grubs and insect pests, and have also been known to consume mice and small rats. They are members of the Mustelid family, which also includes weasels, martens, and badgers. Skunks are found throughout North America, with only one species found in Asia.

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Skunks can only run about ten miles per hour and will not try to outrun a predator.

One reason autos are so dangerous to the skunk is simply the speed of approach. The skunk will stand still to spray, and most drivers wrongly expect the skunk to move away as other wild animals do.

Do other animals besides skunks spray dogs?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Usually skunks are the only animal who have a long record of doing this.

There are other animals like the grey and red fox that spray their urine or musk to deter predators. Most animals spray urine to mark territory. Wild house cats have been know to spray also. However, in most of these cases, the culprit is usually the dog. Dogs have a tendency to want to roll in a scent as part of their hunting instinct. It is an age old tradition by deer hunters to cut a full bladder of urine out of a deer and save it to mask human scent for the hunt. Humans learned this technique from animals themselves.
