Skunks

The size of a cat or smaller with long fur and bushy tails, skunks are easily identified by their distinctive black and white coloration. These near-sighted omnivores have a hearty appetite for grubs and insect pests, and have also been known to consume mice and small rats. They are members of the Mustelid family, which also includes weasels, martens, and badgers. Skunks are found throughout North America, with only one species found in Asia.

Is the civet a fox?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Not really, no. Not even kind of, sorry. The civet is a medium sized land mammal, native to Africa and parts of Asia. It looks something like a cat if you crossed that cat with a raccoon, added a few bits of ferret and maybe one or two of lemur. They often have spotted or striped coats, probably for camouflage. They do not have hooves.

How can you remove skunk odor from your dog?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

My dogs have had their fair share of run-ins with skunks. If you want something that works, try BON-CC-41. This is the only SAFE product I have found that really eliminates the odor the first time it is used. Not only does it eliminate the skunk odor from my dogs, but I can also use it to get rid of the skunk odors around my house, like on furniture, floors and I even use it in my laundry for the towels that had run-ins with the skunked dogs. The method that works the best is to add the BON-CC-41 to some dawn soap and wash the dog with it. The combination works AWESOME! Nothing else can beat it!

My dog use to get sprayed about 2 times a year. I tried the tomato juice, peroxide/baking soda/soap formula, as well as some skunk removal products at the pet stores, Vets and on line all with limited success. I was reading that it is skunk OIL. Well working on cars and needing to clean the grease and OIL my hands what so I have a bar of ....yes Lava Soap. So I tired it today after my dog got it again after a 3 year hiatus. I follow up with cloths detergent and Clorox II mixed together. Well this works for me! Next time I may try hand degreaser/cleaner.

AnswerUsing strong chemicals and cleaners on your dog is likely to cause skin irritations that will like cost lots of money at the vet. If you are desperate to tone down the skunk smell the Secret Formula mentioned below will do pretty well provided you shampoo the sprayed area on the dog with a detergent pet shampoo. Use Joy or Dawn detergent in the hydrogen peroxide mixture.

To get rid of the rest of the odor there is a product that I have used on my dog called Odorxit Concentrate that really gets rid of all the odor. Unfortunately unless you live in Ohio you have to get from the web site.

Answer">AnswerThey use to say tomato juice, but that's an old wive's tale. Phone a vet and they have a formula (you would probably have the ingredients in your home to make it up) and put it on the dog. Only the vet has the secret. LOL

The tomato juice DOES work, you need a lot depending on the size dog, and how bad they got sprayed. rub it all in good and then rinse, wash with some dog shampoo, and then do it all again. Sometimes the dog will still be a little stinky when wet but it will be ok if you do it two or three times - glad there are not as many skunks around here Stream

Answer">AnswerLast time our German Shepherd got sprayed, we thought seriously about what is contained in skunk spray--basically it has an oily base with a bad odor. What safely removes oil and grease? Hand dishwashing detergent. What removes odors? Baking soda. Mix these two together--it may take a few baths, but it cuts the smell considerably. Answer">AnswerSomething that works 10 times better than tomato juice is a mix I got a few years ago recommended by Wildlife Control Technology Magazine. You can not make it up and store it since the chemicals react and can not be bottled. Once you make the up the solution, use all of it. It will foam up on your dog as the chemicals are reacting. Make sure you get every part of the dog otherwise you will smell the parts you missed. Be extra careful not to get in the eyes! Use a sponge to apply, then rinse good. Can be used multiple times, but the peroxide drys out their skin.

Mix in bucket:

1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, 1 tsp liquid soap

The peroxide is the normal everyday home use type and the soap can be dish soap or laundry soap.

Answer">AnswerI believe Petastic has a product out with an enzyme that takes out the skunk smell from both your dog and any thing in your house that might have that smell. There is also an all natural formula that I can not remember the name of. Answer">AnswerPeroxide and tomato juice can be harsh on the dogs skin. The best an inexpensive solution is what the vets use "Doggicleen Skunk Spray" I've used it twice and it works magnificently!

A REAL REMEDY: I'll be honest I tried EVERYTHING. In order, I tried: Tomato juice, dog shampoo, more tomato juice, mouth wash, the peroxide/baking soda/dish soap combo (which by the way only bleached my dogs coat), diet coke, nothing worked. I called my vet and was told to do vinegar for 15 minutes then wash with dawn dishsoap. I didn't do the vinegar part but Dishsoap WORKED! I tried the apple blossom scented soap and it's amazing! So keep Dawn handy in the house in case your pet gets skunked. It does the trick!

Don't Use Tomato Juice or Tomato Paste. While a lot of people think it works, it actually doesn't. It just causes olfactory fatigue where your mind thinks the smell is gone when it's still there. For example, if you go into a stinky bathroom and light a match and then blow it out, the smell is still there but the smoke from the match had a strong enough odor to temporarily trick your mind into thinking the original odor was gone.

How can skunks be helpful to people?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Well, Skunks help the environment in many ways but one very common way is by eating harmful insects. Many farmers don't know this but they find that a "pest" has been in tomato and carrot field, they automatically think that it was out of spite. This is the exact opposite. A skunk's diet consist of mostly insects. To be exact, 70%. When skunk's eat out a farmers plants, they eat the ones that have dangerous insects in them that can seriously harm us with diseases and other bacteria. So if you are a farmer and just someone who likes gardening and you see some of your precious plants missing, don't blame the skunks but in fact thank them.
Skunks are very important to the agricultural environment. The skunks niche is to control the insect population. The skunks are valuable to the agricultural environment because they eat insects that kill the plants.

The fox has a number of symbolic meanings, camouflage, and the ability to meld with one's surroundings is the first to come to mind. The skillful provider is another.

Fox is said to embody adaptability, awareness, cunning, skill, and intelligence.

If fox is your personal totem or spirit guide then this could be a reminder that even the best of us sometimes get caught unawares, sometimes to our determent. However, not all naturally occurring phenomenon are to be interpreted as omens.
