Baby snails do not find empty shells, in fact, they are born with clear, soft shells. The shells harden as the snail consumes calcium and they start with the egg shell they hatched from. The shell grows with the snail and the inner circle of the shell is the shell the snail was born with.

Depends on how you think "special" is. I think snails are special because....aren't they amazing? Can you imagine that it is an animal without a brain, but can eat, sleep, and drink fine just like a normal animal? Such simple creatures astound me as they mate, lay babies, and do stuff any smart animal should do without a brain! Their adaptation to have a shell is pretty smart too. So in my opinion, I think snails are a 'special' animal that is simple but amazing!

Most people believe the second class of mollusks is referring to a school because many fish together is noted as a "school" of fish. This is not the case however. The second class mollusks noted as a "gang". Second class mollusks are the mollusks that, if they were humans, would be classified as "white trash". These mollusks are the dirty bottom feeders that partake in vile activities/ behaviors which gives them the name second class, or nicknamed "classless mollusks".

In their ecosystem, the second class mollusks are in abundance because predators prefer class over "sass". The first class mollusks, which are the predators' choice, show disgust towards the second class mollusks and they even outcast them. It seems as if they are upset to be part of the same species.

The second class mollusks are not eaten by humans, but soon they will be the only mollusks that exist because they have few to no predators.

Most people recommend using copper foil as a repellent for slugs and snails. Conventional wisdom suggests that the slugs & snails receive an unpleasant electrical sensation and are deterred from crossing the copper.

I have had reasonably good success using aluminum foil to repel slugs. When we used to feed our dogs in an enamel pan, slugs would constantly invade and eat the dog food. After switching to an aluminum pan, slugs were no longer a problem. Placing aluminum foil around our broccoli plants helped to deter the slugs as well.

Aluminum is a lot cheaper than copper. For planters and raised beds, you can get a roll of self-adhesive aluminum tape at hardware stores (look in the heating/venting aisle); 2 inches wide and 150 feet long for $10-15 US. Copper foil tape is considerably more expensive, and can be found in the garden department.

Note that the aluminum or copper must be uncoated. The coating will prevent the electrical reaction that repels slugs and snails.

I have found aluminium to be useless against snails.

However, copper appears to work.

I have 10 pots in my front garden. I put copper strips on the lips of 3 of them and aluminium strips on the other 7.

I took a photo in my garden last night which shows a snail happily sliding along on the aluminium strips I had carefully stuck on the edge of one of my pots.

There were many others on the other aluminium edged pots (I killed 11 all up from the aluminium edged pots).

However, the 3 pots edged with copper had no snails in them.

I am not a water snail expert, but first (obviously) I know that they are snails that live in water. These snails will dry up when they are outside of water, and when they escape, this usually means the water they are inside is dirty, so check your water quality if you are a water snail keeper. I sometimes call these water snails aquarium snails, the ones that are sold in petstores. There are Mystery snails and Apple snails in this column.
