Softball

The catcher is allowed to touch the batter while throwing to any base. However, the batter must not move into the catcher's path. If the batter does and the catcher makes contact with the batter, it is called as Interference. If Interference is called during a steal attempt, the runner must go back to their original base.

As a softball player i must say it is popular because parents, family, friends, and fans have as much love for the games as the players. If the players aren't sure this is where they are supposed to be the games is lost for everyone.

The first softball game was played on Thanksgiving Day in 1887. They players played inside of a gym at Farragut Boat club, located in Chicago, IL. The believed inventor of softball is George Hancock.

The location was 3016-3018 Lake Park Avenue. This is now on the grounds of Michael Reese Hospital (now closed) on the near south side. The club house, what was left of it, was demolished in 1952 (circa). There is a monument at the site placed there by some national or international softball federation. A plaque on the side tells the story about George Hancock, Thanksgiving day, etc...

1. A dead ball is when the play stops for one reason or another.
2. A live ball becomes dead when:
   1. The ball touches an antenna or touches the net outside the part of the net directly above the sidelines.
   2. The ball does not cross the net completely WITHIN the antennas.
   3. The ball hits the floor, wall, curtain, or backboard.
   4. The ball hits the ceiling and lands on the defending team's side.
   5. A player commits a fault.
   6. A served ball contacts an object (wall, antenna).
   7. The first or second referee blows a whistle, for whatever reason.

Not until you get to high school. It is against the rules if you are younger than that to wear metal cleats. Even some high school level teams don't allow it. They are banned because if you step on someone when they are sliding, it hurts alot!

Yes you do. Every position requires a glove. But for positions such as catcher or first base you need a certain glove specified forthat position. You can get a glove at any sports store like Dick's or Sports Authority.

Bases are different distances apart at different levels of play in baseball. Here is how you can find the distance across the diamond (home to second, or first to third) on any field:

Square that answer (multiply it by itself).

Double that answer.

Find the square root of that answer.

The answer you get will be the distance from home to second or from first to third.

I've been playing baseball at a competitive level of play for years now. Year after year its amazing to see how much money the bats will be marked at. this year I see bats that are hitting round the $400 dollar mark, its a sin with times so bad right now. I feel that these bat companies are making their prices so high, b/c they are putting more and more work and time to find good "technology" for these bats. There is no question that some bats are much better than others, but most of them are pretty much the same. IF you want a nice bat look in the $150 to $300 range. These are nice bats including bats like (stealth,demarini,exo, and more.) These bats make a little bit of a difference, but if the player is a terrible hitter, this bat is not going to make them look anyyyy better.

Check with your specific league as to what constitutes a strike. In many ASA slow pitch leagues, a strike must arch between 6' and 12' and land within three feet behind the plate. A ball that hits the plate is not considered a strike. The zone that is mentioned above is primarily for baseball and fast-pitch softball since those balls will have a more straight trajectory, whereas the slow-pitch softball will be coming down at an angle and this zone may not be accurate. Ultimately, the umpire will determine what is a strike and what is a ball, so you may need to adjust to how they are calling balls and strikes.

The average 10 yr old kid throws the ball 45MPH. About 33% of pitchers this age can throw the ball 45-50MPH and about 13% can throw the ball 51-55. About 1 kid in a million can throw the ball 60MPH. If your kid can throw more then 48MPH he is considered above average.

Try a 'shuttle'. Have half the team stand in a line (single file) on one side of half the court and one on the other. (You only need one side of the net for this) The players should be facing each other, one behind another. (Make sure there is a space between them large enough for a high volley or a bump. Give the ball to one player in the front of one line and get them to pass it to the person across from him/her. The person then runs to the back of the line she was passing to the shuttle continues. Follow your ball!
